SUNG-LIAO DIPLOMACY in ELEVENTH and TWELFTH CENTURY CHINA: A STUDY of the SOCIAL and POLITICAL, by Melvin Thlick-Len Ang. This is an "authorized facsimile" printed in 1983 by University Microfilms International, Ann Arbor, Michigan, of the ORIGINAL DOCTORAL / PhD THESIS presented to the UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA in the same year, 1983. Softcovers, 6.5x8.5 inches, xii + 316 pages. NEAR FINE condition, sunning to the spine, otherwise looks and feels unused, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. Abstract of the Thesis: ****** In the early eleventh-century, geopolitical considerations caused the Chinese government to initiate a system of regular embassies of exchange with the Liao. The inauguration of permanent diplomatic relations between the two Courts represented a significant departure from the Sinocentric model of a China at the center of the social and political order. This study seeks to determine whether this alteration in the pattern of traditional Sino-barbarian relations led to a permanent institutional change or whether it was treated by the Chinese merely as a temporary if necessary expedient. The investigation moves from the general and theoretical to the specific and quantitative. The first chapter surveys the major theories of Sino-barbarian relations and traditional Chinese relations with Koryo, Annam, the Hsi Hsia, and the Chin. The second chapter presents an historical survey of Sung-Liao relations, including in particular the process by which decades of war were replaced by a century of peaceful diplomatic interchange. The third chapter details the actual process of Sung-Liao diplomacy: The selection of ambassadors; the ranks of appointees; the types of missions; the gifts exchanged; the nature of travel and hospitality. The fourth chapter presents a number of case studies of Sung ambassadors. An attempt is made to develop profiles of ambassadorial types. The fifth chapter presents the results of a prosopographical study of the careers of 608 ambassadors to the Liao and 341 military intendants who served in Liao-sensitive circuits. The effects of elite status, educational attainment, regional origin, and experience on the subsequent careers of ambassadors are analyzed. The data suggest that the Liao threat was taken seriously. Significant numbers of men in top policy making positions could boast ambassadorial experience. But these "experienced" bureaucrats did not become "specialists." Nor was any permanent bureau for foreign policy established as a result of the Sung-Liao diplomatic experience.******

Dating to 1926, the library predates the University itself. It has its origins in the private collection of the family of the foundress of Tenrikyo, Oyasama.

The library specializes in religion, Oriental studies, Near Eastern studies, anthropology, ethnology, topography, language, and Japanese literature. Among the valuable Japanese materials in its rare book collection are six volumes designated as national treasures (such as the Oyo Bunchuko Shu) and over seventy volumes designated as important cultural properties.******

ASSOCIATION COPY: This set was previously owned by WINFIELD SCOTT WELLINGTON, b.1897 d.1979, with his bold and florid signature on the front pastedown of volumes 2-9. Wellington was a noted San Francisco Bay Area Architect, Museum Director, Artist, and Professor of Decorative Arts at UC Berkeley. He was also a noted collector of ceramics.

Each volume covers a different period in East-Asian Ceramic History:

    (1) Japan: Pre-Historic, Proto-Historic and Early Historic Periods. (2) Japan: Ceramics in the Nara to Muromachi Periods. (3) Japan: Ceramics in the Momoyama period. (4) Japan Ceramics in the Edo Period (part I).

    (5) Japan: Ceramics in the Edo period (part II). (6) The Edo period (part III). (7) Tea Ceremony Implements. (8) From Ancient China to Six Dynasties. (9) China: Sui and Tang Dynasties. (10) China: Sung and Liao Dynasties. (11) China: Yuan and Ming Dynasties. (12) China: Ch'ing Dynasty and Annamese and Thai Ceramics. (13) Korea: Pre-Koryo and Koryo Periods. (14) Korean Ceramics in the Li Dynasty.

Volumes 15 and 16 which ARE NOT part of this set, were the only volumes not related to East-Asian ceramics. Volume 15 is on the ceramics of "Europe & Others" and. Volume 16 is on Contemporary Ceramics (mainly non-Asian). As a collector of indigenous East-Asian ceramics perhaps this is why Professor Winfield Scott Wellington was not interested in those last two works.

CONDITION: Volume 1 is in GOOD condition: The back cover of has the ghost of a large sticker that was removed, the front and rear covers have some small stains, and there is a bump to the top of the spine; internally, there is some waviness to the bottom margin of the first few pages, and there are small rust stains and light offsetting to the rear endpapers from the laid-in English language booklet, otherwise the book is tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

VOLUMES 2-14 are in VERY GOOD condition, just a bit of soiling to some of the covers; tissue guards have been removed from most of the frontispieces, else tight, bright, clear, clean and unmarked.

ALL THE PLATES (1800+ in the 14 volume set) are brilliant.

A couple of the laid-in booklets are wavy, and a couple have pulled from their staples but are complete.

Considered to be one of the most extensive published works on East-Asian ceramics.
