Walker are on the inside front cover, the names of all three are found at the top of many pages. The ledger accounts are all of individuals and/or entities from ERIE, and are mostly from 1837 and 1838. The ledger appears to be an accounting of the LIQUIDATION of a GENERAL STORE OWNED BY E. D. D. GUNNISON (another notable citizen of Erie, Pennsylvania) now under RECEIVERSHIP of Joseph M. Sterrett and John H. Walker. Many pages are titled: "Joseph M. Sterrett & John H. Walker assignees of Gunnison & Sage". (******In 1835, Joseph M. Gunnison formed a co-partnership with Charles T. Sage, his son-in-law, under the Firm name of "Gunnison & Sage". The financial revulsion of 1836 caught them, and the Firm went down, stripping him of most of his accumulations. From the book "A Genealogy of the Descendants of Hugh Gunnison of Boston, Mass: From 1610-1876. One Hundred and Twenty Seven Families...", compiled by George W. Gunnison, published by George A. Foxcroft, 1880******) The ACCOUNTS are all VERY DETAILED. They include FULL NAMES of MANY ERIE RESIDENTS along with the items purchased on account. The title of most of the ledger pages is "Erie" along with a month and year. Approximately 130 pages are filled with handwritten entries, probably another 200 pages are blank. The first three pages seem to be a listing of accounts paid out by the Receivership, including "County Taxes", Rent to various individuals, notes paid, etc. Includes names of persons and/or entities paid, amounts, dates. This is followed by 101 pages filled with individual accounts, with Full Names of the account holder(s), description of item(s) purchased, and amounts owed or have paid. This was perhaps for collection purposes. This is followed by another three pages of accounts paid, again including names and/or entities paid, amounts, and dates. There are then several pages that appear to be amounts paid to Joseph M. Sterrett and John H. Walker by E.D. Gunnison and Sage, for work performed as Assignees. The payments were most likely from proceeds of the liquidation. The Ledger book then seems to have been left dormant until it was re-used in 1870-1871 as an accounts day book by G.W. GUNNISON, Erie, Pennsylvania, apparently for various and sundry sales to various and sundry residents of Erie. There are 20 numbered pages to this section. On the last page, the page facing the inside rear cover, there is a list of 37 full names of people who died (presumably in Erie, PA) in 1871. Included are the date of death and the age of the person who died. On the rear pastedown there is a list of some events in the Erie area that took place in 1871. CONDITION: The covers are scraped, rubbed, and generally worn, the leather spine covering has peeled for the bottom 4", nonetheless the covers are holding well with their 4 cord binding; the front pastedown has offsetting, is toned and has dime-size glue droplets (perhaps something was glued on to the pastedown that was removed); the first 4 pages are split at their binding and almost disbound; the first page has a newspaper clipping and an "Erie Rolling Mill Co." publicity card glued on to it, covering many of the names and information on the page; a couple sections are almost disbound, some are shaky, there are some smudges and soiling here and there, but overall the pages (other than the first 3) are tight, bright and clean, with writing that is clear and fully legible. With a little searching you can find much about JOSEPH M. STERRETT, JOHN H. WALKER, and E.D. GUNNISON, all of ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, on the Internet.

The map folds open to 9x11 inches, a small but nice and rare map. This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. Rebound in black cloth covered boards by Sutro, there are Sutro shelving numbers etched on the spine, a Sutro Library bookplate on the front pastedown, and Sutro and related library stamps and marks here and there. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books originally collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until, in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned so that the collection would fit it into its new space. In its new home at SFSU the Sutro Library is still considered to have the best genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and is now much better cared for, it is just not as large as it was. Once these wonderful deaccessioned Sutro genealogy books find new homes they will likely not be seen again for some time. CONDITION: The recent, library covers are near fine. Internally, there are ex Sutro and related library stamps and marks as noted above, the pages are lightly toned, otherwise the pages remain bright, clean, and clear. The fold open map has some small spots and light toning but is solid, clear and opens well. RARE CIVIL WAR ERA 1863 DIRECTORY, ALMANAC and VOLUNTEER LIST of WORCESTER, Massachusetts. With a City Map. About the SUTRO LIBRARY (from where this book was deaccessioned): ******The Sutro Library holds the original collection of Adolph Sutro (1830-1898), California businessman and San Francisco mayor. The library has a large collection of publications and items dating from the 13th to the 21st centuries. It also has one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S. Adolph Sutro's heirs donated his collection to the California State Library in 1913 with the requirement that the collection stay within the city of San Francisco. After operating in various locations in the city for almost 100 years, the Sutro Library moved to a permanent home at San Francisco State University in 2012.******

Items sold include: Old Judge Cigarettes, Cigars, Eggs, Peanuts, Matches, Pails, Corn Powder, Maple Sugar, Sacks, Tea Cakes, Barrell Crackers, Fruit Jars, Journals, Texas Jack, Envelopes, Manilla Paper, Rags, Candy, etc. etc. Condition: The covers are soiled, have spotting and some marks, and the leather covered corners are worn; nonetheless these original covers are still doing their job well. Internally, the first 16 pages and the last 2 pages have some large tears, some a few inches long, and chips. The tears are mostly closed tears that run across some of the entries. Many of the tears could be repaired with tape. There is a piece missing from the top of pages 9/10 and 15/16 that removes most of the first entry on all of those pages. A few other pages here and there have some tearing and wear at their blank top margin. As noted above, all the pages after 162 were torn out of this ledger. The paper remnants of the torn out pages remain at the rear. Despite these flaws, this ledger remains solid, with pages that are bright, clean and clear. The handwriting, filling every one of the 162 pages, is dark, easy to read, and fully legible. Want to know who lived in Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania, in 1883? This genealogically rich ledger will tell you!

CONDITION: The covers are worn, the spine covering has a shelving label and is pulled with small tears at its ends, the boards are worn through at the edges and corners, and the boards are rubbed, scraped and have some toning and soiling; nonetheless the covers are original and are doing their job. Internally, the front and rear hinges are cracked but holding, there are Sutro library stamps and marks as noted above, the ink stamp of "ADDRESSING CO. OF N.Y." is stamped on the top margin of a number of pages, the title page of the directory, following 16 pages of ads, is worn, scraped and has some closed tape repairs at its gutter edge, the text block is split at a few places where the book was over opened but always remains well bound, there are some small tears, chips and marks here and there, and the pages are all lightly toned, otherwise a complete and solid copy with printing that is bright and clear. Did I mention that the ads are really cool? An Original SALEM & VICINITY City Directory from 1905. A treasure trove of Witch Town Genealogy. After operating in various locations in the city for almost 100 years, the Sutro Library moved to a permanent home at San Francisco State University in 2012.****** INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This book is heavy and will require substantial additional shipping charges.
