Condition: There is some foxing and toning, but overall the illuminated leaf is gorgeous, and the gold stands out tangibly. The backside of the leaf and the facing title page of the bible are stained and darkened from where the paint bled through. JOHN FORBES HARDY is a relatively obscure ARTIST from HAMPSTEAD, ENGLAND, who was active as a painter from 1847 to 1874. One of his better known works is believed to be of a view of "Hampstead Heath". I do not know, and cannot seem to find out, who the illuminator / painter, Marianne Hayward, is - but someone must know because the work is so lovely. RARE and UNIQUE - an Illuminated Leaf related to HARDY, SOUTHARD and FORBES Families.

Williams, Casper (aka Caspar) Metzger, John Tidd, John Shiffer, Thomas Stemple, Frank Fetherman, Amos Shoemaker, Charles Everitt, Peter P. Shaffer, Charles Woehrle, Samuel Hood, Henry Pye, Thomas Stemple, and many, many, many more. Items sold include: Old Judge Cigarettes, Cigars, Eggs, Peanuts, Matches, Pails, Corn Powder, Maple Sugar, Sacks, Tea Cakes, Barrell Crackers, Fruit Jars, Journals, Texas Jack, Envelopes, Manilla Paper, Rags, Candy, etc. etc. Condition: The covers are soiled, have spotting and some marks, and the leather covered corners are worn; nonetheless these original covers are still doing their job well. Internally, the first 16 pages and the last 2 pages have some large tears, some a few inches long, and chips. The tears are mostly closed tears that run across some of the entries. Many of the tears could be repaired with tape. There is a piece missing from the top of pages 9/10 and 15/16 that removes most of the first entry on all of those pages. A few other pages here and there have some tearing and wear at their blank top margin. As noted above, all the pages after 162 were torn out of this ledger. The paper remnants of the torn out pages remain at the rear. Despite these flaws, this ledger remains solid, with pages that are bright, clean and clear. The handwriting, filling every one of the 162 pages, is dark, easy to read, and fully legible. Want to know who lived in Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania, in 1883? Contains numerous advertisements of the day, including an advertising section at the front. These directories were published as advertising vehicles so ads are everywhere, including the covers and page edges.

This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. There is a Sutro Library bookplate on the front pastedown, and Sutro and related library ink stamps, labels and marks on the front endpapers and here and there. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned so that the collection would fit it into its new space. In its new home the Sutro Library is still considered to have the best genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and is now much better cared for, it is just not as large as it was. Once these wonderful deaccessioned Sutro genealogy books find new homes they will likely not be seen again for some time.

Only FAIR CONDITION: The paper covered boards are worn through at the corners and edges, and are worn and rubbed at the front and rear panels; the cloth covered spine is worn and peeling at the folds and spine ends, the boards are rubbed and soiled; nevertheless the covers are original and still doing their job. Internally, the front and rear inner hinges are split but holding; there are Sutro and related library ink stamps, labels and marks as noted above; there is clear tape repair to a number of pages; the green pages (advertising pages) are toned at the margins; one page of the green ads is heavily chipped along the edges and has been taped in; there are blue check marks by a few names; the inner text block hinge is split at a few places but holding. Well used, but complete.

An Original MONTPELIER, VERMONT, City Directory from 1911. A treasure trove of Vermont genealogy.

About the SUTRO LIBRARY (from where this book was deaccessioned):

******The Sutro Library holds the original collection of Adolph Sutro (1830-1898), California businessman and San Francisco mayor. The library has a large collection of publications and items dating from the 13th to the 21st centuries. It also has one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S.

Adolph Sutro's heirs donated his collection to the California State Library in 1913 with the requirement that the collection stay within the city of San Francisco. After operating in various locations in the city for almost 100 years, the Sutro Library moved to a permanent home at San Francisco State University in 2012.******

They have several folds, as normal, are toned, have some foxing, and are edge worn. They have some handwritten corrections, a tax stamp, and an official notary blindstamp. A worn copy with a damaged and half-missing cover, but the deed is complete and full of some nice genealogical references to early Maryland residents.

This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. There are Sutro and related library ink stamps, labels and marks here and there throughout. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until, in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU, quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned, so that the collection would fit it into its new space. In its new home the Sutro Library is still considered to have the best genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and is now much better cared for, it's just not as large as it was. Once these wonderful deaccessioned Sutro genealogy books find new homes they will likely not be seen again for some time.

FAIR CONDITION: The paper covered boards are worn through at the corners and spine ends, soiled, have a dime size stain, and the pine is sunned / darkened. Internally, there are Sutro and related library labels and marks as noted above, there is a bit of tape repair to the first page, the front and rear hinges are split but holding; overall the inner pages are tight, bright, clean and clear.

A Complete and Original NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, City Directory from 1922. A treasure trove of Connecticut genealogy.
