GOOD CONDITION:

The covers have some light staining, some spotting, age toning, and the manuscript writing on the spine is now illegible, but the pigskin boards are solid and quite attractive, and the covers' clasps are functional.

Internally, lacking 1 of the 18 folding plates (the 3 single page portrait engravings are present), 2 of the folding plates are torn with loss (the one next to page 332 Part III is missing all of its fold-open part), otherwise the plates are bright and attractive; the blank endpapers have some soiling; the title-page has some previous owner's notes (they appear to be relevant), the pages are lightly age toned, there is some soiling, spotting, edge chipping, marginalia, etc. here and there. Overall a solid, attractive, presentable copy of this 1710 book.

1860 HAND PAINTED ILLUMINATED FRONTISPIECE LEAF from a FAMILY BIBLE. This frontispiece leaf was hand painted and illuminated on a blank prelim page of an 1802 BIBLE owned by the HARDY FAMILY of Hampstead, England.

The leaf measures 5.5x 9". It has been disbound but is still sewn at spine together with the 1802 Bible's title page and a few pages of the Bible's Preface. The names, dates, and information on this gorgeous one-of-a-kind leaf are (some words painted legibly large, some almost hidden in the lovely painted ribbons and decorations): JOSEPH HARDY / Born May 16, 1788; MARY CLARKE SOUTHARD / Born May 29, 1790; JOHN FORBES HARDY / Born at Hampstead Oct 24th 1816. / Married June 12 1847 / ROSE (PARSLOP?) (At the bottom right in tiny letters hidden in a colored band) MARIANNE (HAYWARD?) / FECIT (i.e. painted / made by Marianne Hayward) (At the bottom left in tiny letters) 1860. Condition: There is some foxing and toning, but overall the illuminated leaf is gorgeous, and the gold stands out tangibly. The backside of the leaf and the facing title page of the bible are stained and darkened from where the paint bled through. JOHN FORBES HARDY is a relatively obscure ARTIST from HAMPSTEAD, ENGLAND, who was active as a painter from 1847 to 1874. One of his better known works is believed to be of a view of "Hampstead Heath". I do not know, and cannot seem to find out, who the illuminator / painter, Marianne Hayward, is - but someone must know because the work is so lovely. RARE and UNIQUE - an Illuminated Leaf related to HARDY, SOUTHARD and FORBES Families.

Hardcovers, professionally rebound covers and endpapers (likely by Charles Walker Andrews), 6x9 inches (15x23 cm), 652 pages. Illustrated with portraits interspersed throughout, each printed on heavy stock paper and protected with a tissue guard. There is a sheet tipped-in on a blank prelim with a handwritten "Line of Descent" that likely relates to Charles Walker Andrews.

GOOD condition, the covers are worn at the corners and some places along the edges, but remain sturdy and are doing their job well; internally the pages have toned, there are a couple of genealogical additions and corrections here and there, otherwise tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid, nice, presentable copy.

The 1872 First Edition is SCARCE, especially so SIGNED by CHARLES ANDREWS and with the BOOKPLATE of his son CHARLES WALKER ANDREWS. (Beware the 1972 reprints and reproduction copies.)

Printed on fine rag paper with deckled edges, watermarked "Berkshire Text", paper produced by the American Writing Paper Co., of Holyoke, Massachusetts (founded in 1899). Wrappers / softcovers, brown paper covers printed with a title on the front cover. There are 32 leaves (sheets) of 8" x 11" paper, 2-hole punched at the left margin, bound with a single staple in middle of the left edge and with a cord through the two holes that binds the inner pages to the plain brown card covers. Inner pages consist of a Title Page, a Foreword by Eva Turner Clark, an Appendix, and 12 pages with a tipped-on photographic plate facing 12 pages of a biographical description of the soldier being pictured (i.e. there are TWELVE "Cousins of the Great War", each with a tipped-on photo on one page with their description on the facing page). The backsides of most pages are blank, and a number of leaves are entirely blank. The cousins, all related to the author Eva Turner Clark, are: Randolph William Apperson, Austin William Clark, Edward Hardy Clark, Henry Burrow Clark, Morris Richard Clark, Joseph Marshall Flint, Richard Clark Kroeger, Randolph Clark Mayfield, Howard Gray Park, Paul Everton Peabody, John Thomas Whitmire, and Anvil Clark Williams. FAIR CONDITION: The paper covered boards are worn through at the corners and spine ends, soiled, have a dime size stain, and the pine is sunned / darkened. Internally, there are Sutro and related library labels and marks as noted above, there is a bit of tape repair to the first page, the front and rear hinges are split but holding; overall the inner pages are tight, bright, clean and clear.

Autograph Book, lacks covers, staple bound, 3.5x5.5 inches, 60 pages (30 leaves), 46 of the pages have inscriptions with signatures. The first inscription and signature is by the mother of Marie Beidleman and is dated June 7th, 1922. Most of the signatures / inscriptions seem to be from classmates from Ceres, California. Most have dates, beginning in 1923 with the last one being in 1926. Most have signed their full names, and a few put a place as CERES, CALIFORNIA. Marie Beidleman comes up as having been a student in CERES, CALIFORNIA. A quick Internet search found that some of the other names were also from kids in schools in CERES, CALIFORNIA. Names in this autograph / inscription book include: Helen Lander, Dolores Nelson, Bernice Madden, Adele Bisher, Margaret Nyquist, Ethel Baldridge, Dorothy Keith, Lois Ertle, Alice Ertle, Nancy Tupman, Hazel Buerer, Evelyn McQueen, and many more. Condition: Lacking covers as noted above, a few pages are toned from offsetting, light corner creases and other signs of handling, overall still bound well with writing that is clean, clear and fully legible.

1936 Yearbook of STELLA HIGH SCHOOL, STELLA, NEBRASKA. "ECHOES OF STELLA". Has actual 3x5 inch b&w photographs for each of the classes mounted with photo corners.

Includes essays about the school, students, teachers, activities, sports, etc.

What makes this a GENEALOGY TREASURE is that there is an 8 page section that lists all the ALUMNI of STELLA HIGH SCHOOL from 1889-1935. Being a small town, this list basically covers many of its early residents, their names, and where they are now. A previous owner has added additional details by some of the names, e.g. "died 1952".

Paper wrappers, cord tied, inner pages side stapled. Inner pages are 8.5x11 inch and the wrappers over hang them, 48 unnumbered pages printed on one side only.

GOOD condition: The wrappers are worn and tearing at the edges where they overhang the inner pages; internally nice, the pages are just lightly toned, a couple pages have offsetting, otherwise tight, bright, clean and clear.

We will be having a pop quiz on Stella, Nebraska. It will account for 90% of your grade. Better study up.

1941 Autograph Book kept by Murray, a student graduating from East New York Junior High School, Public School 149, later to be known as PS 149 "Danny Kaye". Like many schools in Brooklyn, the demographics of the school have changed dramatically since 1941.

The autograph book is held in a zippered blue vinyl case which is embossed on the front cover with: "Autographs / E. N. Y. J. H. S. / 149". It measures 4..5x5.5 inches. There are approximately 60 pages where signatures and memories are written.

Though the autographs in the book are all dated 1941, the autograph book itself was likely published in 1939 because the first 7 pages are photographs of the 1939 NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR. These are followed by a photograph of the school building and the school's principal. Then comes the autograph section.

Some of the kids who signed and left comments in the book include: Harriet Rothberg, Lorraine Olanoff, Seymour Boom, Sol Wishnick, Meyer Meltzer, Seymour Weintraub, David Simon, Frieda Scharfstein, and many others.

The owner of the autograph book was named Murray, though some referred to him as "Moish or Moe".

The autograph book is in VERY GOOD condition, all the pages are tight, bright, clean and clear. The zippered case is sturdy and functions well, but the gilt embossing on the front cover has substantially faded.
