HISTORY of the STATE OF CALIFORNIA and BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD of OAKLAND and ENVIRONS. By J.M. Guinn.

Published by Historic Record Co., Los Angeles, [1907].

Pagination: Volume I, xviii + 19-464 numbered pages; Volume II, 467-858 numbered pages.

The first 278 pages of Volume I is devoted to the history of California, with the final 188 pages of Volume I and ALL of Volume II devoted to biographical sketches of famous and influential men of OAKLAND and vicinity.

The Biographical Sketches of both volumes are ILLUSTRATED with PORTRAITS of PROMINENT MEN, plus a token Woman or few, from the Oakland area.

It is well known that the Biographical section contains biographies and portraits of men who PAID to have their biographies included, and even more to have their biography accompanied with a portrait. That is how the publisher covered its costs and made profits. It also made profits by selling copies to those same men whose biographies are in the book. Though a VANITY publication, this early look at the movers and shakers of OAKLAND region of California has become an important historical and genealogical record of the time.

VERY GOOD condition: the covers are lightly worn and scraped, noticeably at the spine folds, corner tips and the top spine area of Vol. II; else the covers are solid and bright; internally there is age toning / spotting to the top margin area of the first and last few pages of both volumes, otherwise tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked, with edge gilt that remains very bright. Some of the portrait plates still have their tissue guards.

VERY PRESENTABLE COPIES of this TWO VOLUME SET focused on the MOVERS and SHAKERS of OAKLAND and VICINITY in 1907.

INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS PLEASE NOTE: These two volumes are large and heavy and will require substantial additional shipping charges. After placing your order you will be notified of the charges and be able to accept or reject them before payment is taken. Thanks!

The Gazetteer also contains a brief history of the state, a listing of Iowa State government offices and officers, Yellow Pages, and lots of other information.

A thick and quite comprehensive gazetteer and business directory.

Published by R.L. Polk & Co., Des Moines, 1918. This is the Original, Vintage Directory.

Rebound in Sutro Library hardcovers with black title and shelving info on the spine, the original volume is bound within including all the various sections and advertising pages, 6x9 inches, thick volume, 1814 pages.

Contains numerous advertisements of the day. These directories were published as advertising vehicles so ads are everywhere.

This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. There is a Sutro Library bookplate on the front pastedown, and Sutro and related library ink stamps, labels, shelving numbers, and marks on the front endpapers and here and there. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned so that the collection would fit it into its new space. In its new home the Sutro Library is still considered to have the best genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and is now much better cared for, it is just not as large as it was. Once these wonderful deaccessioned Sutro genealogy books find new homes they will likely not be seen again for some time.

GOOD CONDITION: The rebound hard covers are solid and doing their job well. Internally there are Sutro and associated labels, marks and stamps as noted above, there is a small remnant of paper on the title page, there are previous owner's marks by a number of names and businesses, and for some reason the "Dressmakers" on 4 pages of the business directory have been X'd out though the names can still be read, overall the inner pages are tight, bright, clean, clear and fully legible. A solid, nice, presentable copy.

AN ORIGINAL 1918-1919 DIRECTORY of the Cities, Towns and Villages of the State of Iowa, and the Businesses and Business People in them. A hefty treasure trove of regional and genealogical information.

INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This book is heavy and will require substantial additional shipping charges. SOME COUSINS OF THE GREAT WAR, April 3rd, 1917 - November 11th, 1918. Compiled by EVA TURNER CLARK. Self-Published, Self-Bound, New York, 1920. Printed on fine rag paper with deckled edges, watermarked "Berkshire Text", paper produced by the American Writing Paper Co., of Holyoke, Massachusetts (founded in 1899). Wrappers / softcovers, brown paper covers printed with a title on the front cover. There are 32 leaves (sheets) of 8" x 11" paper, 2-hole punched at the left margin, bound with a single staple in middle of the left edge and with a cord through the two holes that binds the inner pages to the plain brown card covers. Inner pages consist of a Title Page, a Foreword by Eva Turner Clark, an Appendix, and 12 pages with a tipped-on photographic plate facing 12 pages of a biographical description of the soldier being pictured (i.e. there are TWELVE "Cousins of the Great War", each with a tipped-on photo on one page with their description on the facing page). The backsides of most pages are blank, and a number of leaves are entirely blank. The cousins, all related to the author Eva Turner Clark, are: Randolph William Apperson, Austin William Clark, Edward Hardy Clark, Henry Burrow Clark, Morris Richard Clark, Joseph Marshall Flint, Richard Clark Kroeger, Randolph Clark Mayfield, Howard Gray Park, Paul Everton Peabody, John Thomas Whitmire, and Anvil Clark Williams. Condition: Covers are chipped especially at their top edges, worn along all the edges and peeling at the spine ends, nonetheless they are present, original, and still bound well to the inner pages. Internally, one sheet has a 1" closed edge tear, otherwise all the leaves are very good, bright, clean and unmarked. All the tipped-in photographic plates are bright and clear. An attractive, original, complete copy. This ORIGINAL 1820 SELF-PUBLISHED BOOK / DOCUMENT is SCARCE.
