Senior Class of Stella High School

1936 Yearbook of STELLA HIGH SCHOOL, STELLA, NEBRASKA. "ECHOES OF STELLA". Has actual 3x5 inch b&w photographs for each of the classes mounted with photo corners.

Includes essays about the school, students, teachers, activities, sports, etc.

What makes this a GENEALOGY TREASURE is that there is an 8 page section that lists all the ALUMNI of STELLA HIGH SCHOOL from 1889-1935. Being a small town, this list basically covers many of its early residents, their names, and where they are now. A previous owner has added additional details by some of the names, e.g. "died 1952".

Paper wrappers, cord tied, inner pages side stapled. Inner pages are 8.5x11 inch and the wrappers over hang them, 48 unnumbered pages printed on…

1941 Autograph Book kept by Murray, a student graduating from East New York Junior High School, Public School 149, later to be known as PS 149 "Danny Kaye". Like many schools in Brooklyn, the demographics of the school have changed dramatically since 1941.

The autograph book is held in a zippered blue vinyl case which is embossed on the front cover with: "Autographs / E. N. Y. J. H. S. / 149". It measures 4..5x5.5 inches. There are approximately 60 pages where signatures and memories are written.

Though the autographs in the book are all dated 1941, the autograph book itself was likely published in 1939 because the first 7 pages are photographs of the 1939 NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR. These are followed by a photograph of the school building and the school's principal. Then comes the autograph section.

Some of the kids who signed and left comments in the book include: Harriet Rothberg, Lorraine Olanoff, Seymour Boom, Sol Wishnick, Meyer Meltzer, Seymour Weintraub, David Simon, Frieda Scharfstein, and many others.

The owner of the autograph book was named Murray, though some referred to him as "Moish or Moe".

The autograph book is in VERY GOOD condition, all the pages are tight, bright, clean and clear. The zippered case is sturdy and functions well, but the gilt embossing on the front cover has substantially faded.

This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. There is a Sutro Library bookplate on the front pastedown, and Sutro Library ink stamps and associated library marks and stamps here and there throughout. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until, in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU, quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned, so that the collection would fit it into its new space. In its new home the Sutro Library is still considered to have the best genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and is now much better cared for, it's just not as large as it was. Once these wonderful deaccessioned Sutro genealogy books find new homes they will likely not be seen again for some time.

CONDITION: The covers are worn through at the corners, spine ends, and places along the edges, have rubs and scrapes, and some soiling; the spine has a white letter "B" glued on it. The binding is somewhat shaky, as to be expected with this large and thick book. Internally, there are Sutro and related library stamps and marks as noted above, there are a few closed tears and a bit of edge wear here and there, overall the pages remain bright, clean and clear. A solid, presentable copy.

A COMPLETE, ORIGINAL 1947 DIRECTORY of RESIDENTS and BUSINESSES in BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.

About the SUTRO LIBRARY (from where this book was deaccessioned):

******The Sutro Library holds the original collection of Adolph Sutro (1830-1898), California businessman and San Francisco mayor. The library has a large collection of publications and items dating from the 13th to the 21st centuries. It also has one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S.

Adolph Sutro's heirs donated his collection to the California State Library in 1913 with the requirement that the collection stay within the city of San Francisco. After operating in various locations in the city for almost 100 years, the Sutro Library moved to a permanent home at San Francisco State University in 2012.******

The archive includes: * Three school type binders filled with about 50 pages each. The first binder is titled "Bailhache Genealogy Per ORMSBY, L." This binder contains copies of what were handwritten pages full of genealogy related to the Bailhache Family, including the Coffin, Fitch, Bachelder, Swain, and other families. The second binder begins with a letter from Anne Johnson to Charles and Mary Bailhache, dated February 26, 1998. It is FULL of PHOTOCOPIES of documents, charts, letters, transcripts of obituaries (e.g. "Transcript of Obituary of Nicholas Bailhache from notes of Mary Louis Smith ORMSBY, by Anne Johnson, July 2, 1997"), and all sorts of other incredible genealogical materials. This was obviously all compiled by Anne Johnson, then photocopied to sent to Charles and Mary Bailhache. There are handwritten annotations throughout, presumably in the hand of Anne Johnson. The third binder is full of handwritten genealogy of the Bailhache Family and limited genealogical data of quite a number of related families. * Lots of correspondence relating to the Bailhache Family and some related families, Includes photocopies of original letters, typed letters, handwritten letters, and email correspondence (mostly from the mid to late 1990s). Includes some interesting letters from Bailhache families in both France and the U.K. * A number of Wills and Deeds (one Deed is missing a large piece at the top). * A group of items that includes a Vintage Photo of "Senora Josefa Fitch de Bailhache" (as written on the backside), the photo is split across its middle and is being held together with yellowing tape on the backside; personal IDs, a Family Crest, a Funeral Guest Book, some In Memoriam Cards, etc. * A very long roll open chart that begins with the statement: "Descendants of JOHN BAILHACHE, d. 1800, Schoolmaster, Married to MARY DE LA PERRELLE b. Circa 1762, d. 1847". Printed. Rolls open to approximately 13x68 inches (1 ft 1 inch x 5 ft 8 inches). And... * Lots of other Bailhache Family paper ephemera and research. The archive is in generally GOOD condition with the majority of items being solid, bright, clean and clear. The exceptions are a few items that have tears, pieces torn off, etc. The BAILHACHE FAMILY played a significant role in the early history of Sonoma County, Northern California. This volume includes additions and corrections to the original volume and the first supplement. You will also find some cemeteries included in this book that were missed in other editions. I have worked primarily with obituaries from local newspapers, which I have accumulated for many years. Some information has come from family members and friends of the deceased, while part of the other information has been verified by visits to cemeteries. Pages 1 through 88 cover the period from the Fall of 1983 through Sept. 1987 and was compiled several years ago. I later decided to add much more information to this book before printing. However, the index is a combined index for both sections. Such data is difficult at best to transcribe and arrange in final book form..."
