STORACE (Alfonso Maria Storace), Tomaso 16, Napoli (Naples)" on the front free endpaper. Alfonso Maria Storace wrote, among other things, a book titled: Ricerche Storiche Intorno al Comune di s. Antimo (Historical Research of the City of Sant'Antimo, Italy), which was published in Naples, Italy, in 1887. There is a circular ink stamp on the front pastedown showing that this book once was in the Library of Rev. L. KUENZEL (LESTER HENRY KUENZEL, aka Reverend L. Kunzel, Father Lester H. Kuenzel). He wrote, among other things, "A Manual of the Ceremonies of Low Mass" which was published in New York in 1930. And there is also a small, recent bookplate on the front pastedown with the letters "SAG". Condition: Remnants of a shelving label on the spine, spine lettering has rubbed away, some yellowing and soiling to the vellum covers, inner hinges cracked but holding, inner pages are toned, some quite heavily, but the printing is always legible. Overall a complete, solid, presentable copy of this book from 1713. About FRANÇOIS DOUAREN (from Wikipedia): ******François Douaren (also sometimes spelled Duaren; Franciscus Duarenus; Francisci Duareni) b. 1509 d. 1559,

was a French jurist and professor of law at the University of Bourges. After studies in Paris under Budé and in Bourges, Douaren worked as an advocate for the Parlement of Paris. In 1538, he was called to teach at Bourges. Following a bitter dispute with Baro, he abandoned the chair for Paris until Baro's death in 1550, after which Douaren returned to teach at Bourges. Like his compatriots Jacques Cujas, François Hotman and Hugues Doneau, Douaren was one of the leading representatives of the legal humanist school of thought within the science of Roman law on the European continent. These 16th century French law professors applied the philological methods of the Italian humanists to legal texts. It was their aim to arrive at a historically more accurate understanding of the texts of the Roman Corpus Iuris Civilis. In addition to numerous commentaries on the Corpus, Douaren wrote a leading commentary on the Roman law of obligations, Commentarius de pactis (1544), which greatly influenced modern theories of obligations. His 1544 programme of studies, De ratione docendi discendique iuris epistola, was the first statement of the mos gallicus, the French Humanist approach to higher education. Despite its flaws this is a complete copy, with printing that is clear, bright and fully legible. About SIR RICHARD STEELE (from Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet): ******Sir Richard Steele (bap. 12 March 1672 - 1 September 1729) was an Irish writer and politician, remembered as co-founder, with his friend Joseph Addison, of the magazine The Spectator. Steele became a Whig Member of Parliament in 1713, for Stockbridge. He was soon expelled for issuing a pamphlet in favor of the Hanoverian succession. When George I of Great Britain came to the throne in the following year, Steele was knighted and given responsibility for the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London. Important treatise relating to the bronze tables of Heraclea datable between the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 3rd century BC. Found in a stream bed between 1732 and 1735 near Metaponto. The tablets are especially important for their look at Roman Law. They are now held in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

CONDITION: The covers are worn, scuffed, scraped and with light stains to the spine; the front cover is disbound as is the front free endpaper and the half title page; the rear cover is just hanging on with the binding cords. Internally, there is foxing to the first and last few pages, and a bit here and there; the last few pages have shorelining at the bottom gutter area not affecting text, the last page is age toned, the half title page is loose, is creased, and is worn at the disbound edge but it is present and still solid; overall the inner pages are very nice, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. The map and 10 plates are all in amazingly good condition, sturdy and feel rarely opened, they have some offsetting and age toning, and a few have a small tear to the edge of a bottom fold where the plate is bound in, but that is it, no significant tears and all are bright, clean and clear.

About the HERCLEAN TABLETS (from Wikipedia):

******The Heraclean Tablets (in older texts: the Heraclean Table(s); in Latin: Tabulae Heracleenses) were bronze tablets found a short distance from the site of Heraclea Lucania, between it and Metapontum. They are significant for the study of Roman Law.

As a consequence of its having accepted Roman citizenship in 89 BCE, Heraclea became a municipium, and the Tabulae Heracleenses contain a long Latin inscription relating to the municipal regulations of Heraclea, which is a part of a copy of a more general law, the Lex Iulia Municipalis, issued in 45 BCE for the regulation of the municipal institutions of towns throughout Italy. This document is a major authority for the municipal law of ancient Italy; it is engraved on two tablets of bronze, on the back of which is a long Greek inscription of earlier date, probably the 3rd century BC, defining the boundaries of lands belonging to various temples.

The tablets were separate, and the major one was in two fragments. They were found in 1732, and 1735, in the bed of the Cavone river. The tablets are now in the Naples National Archaeological Museum.

The Latin inscription was first published by Michel Maittaire in 1735. Both inscriptions were published with commentaries, by Alessio Simmacho Mazzocchi, b.1684 d.1771, in Naples in 1754, 1755.******

Internally, the front hinge is cracked but holding well, the pages are toned with the early and latter pages somewhat darker than the rest; overall this 1755 book remains tight, bright, clean, clear, and unmarked. A solid, presentable copy. This early law book was oft reprinted. While early editions are hard to find, the 1755 FIRST EDITION is almost impossible to find. About CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH GEORG MEISTER (excerpted from various Internet sources): Christian Friedrich Georg Meister, b. 1718 d. 1782, received his doctorate from the University of Göttingen in 1741. He began his law career first as a private lawyer and highly sought after law lecturer. In 1754 he became a full professor of Law at the University of Gottingen. He quickly became one the University's most important law professors. In 1755 he wrote what is considered his most important and influential work, the PRINCIPIA JURIS CRIMINALIS.******

The Journals include many important resolutions, including: A resolution to ABOLISH SLAVERY IN WESTERN COUNTRY (i.e. Western States yet to be established in the United States owned Western Territories). Senators from seven Northern States voted Ay, Senators from Maryland voted mixed but there was a tie-breaker third vote so the state voted Ay, and Senators from four Southern States voted NO. So the 1784 resolution ABOLISHING SLAVERY in any Western States to be formed out of U.S. Western Territory was PASSED.

Internally, the pages are toned and there is some foxing throughout, the latter pages have light shorelining to their upper margin area (printing is always fully legible); there is an old (circa 1870) Lombard University library bookplate on the front pastedown (Lombard University was founded in 1853, changed its name to Lombard College circa 1890, and finally shuttered in 1930); the front and rear inner hinges are cracked but holding well, the front free-endpaper is separating at its top 2 inches; there is edge wear including small closed edge tears and chips, folded corners, and a couple folded pages here and there; one page has a small whole; there is a previous owner's signature and date on the front free-endpaper (?? / Dec 9th, 1828), the number 178 written on the title page (copy 178?), and an early previous owner's signature at the top of the first page of text (B. Overall, the pages are showing their age but are nonetheless complete, legible, and attractively rebound.

Three Page Handwritten Draft Letter by a Politically Progressive Texas Man re: Reforming the Texas Republican Party: "I am one of the progressives who is in favor of co-operation with you in trying to restore the Republican Party to its former prestige and usefulness..." The draft letter is written by W. E. Singleton (Captain WILLIAM E. SINGLETON) of Jefferson, Texas, and addressed to "Hon. C. A. Lyon" (Honorable CECIL ANDREW LYON). The draft letter is dated "Jefferson Texas / Feb (17th and 18th), 1916". It is interesting to note that Cecil A. Lyon died two months after this draft was written, and William E. Singleton died within a year after this draft was written. Both deaths marking the end of "Progressive Republicans" in Texas. This draft letter is handwritten, it is the same text written out twice, once in pencil and once in ink, as if in practice for a finished letter that would (presumably) be sent. Three pages written on one side only of three sheets of watermarked laid-paper 5x8". The text is as follows: "I am in receipt of your circular letter of date February 4th (?) and will say: I am one of the progressives who is in favor of co-operation with you in trying to restore the Republican Party to its former prestige and usefulness. I am very much in favor of a conference of the leading Republicans and Progressives to try and adjust their differences and will be glad to meet with you and assist in any capacity in bringing about harmony and party discipline. I am very sincerely yours, W.E. Singleton". POOR condition, thumbprint size chip on the right side of the sheets, lesser chipping at the bottom right corner, all sheets have two horizontal folds from where they were folded to fit into an envelope, one sheet has insect holes all along its upper fold, almost splitting the sheet into two parts, another sheet has some insect holes across its top fold, the chip and holes affect some text, all sheets have some toning and foxing; NONETHELESS, the writing is clear and the text legible. An interesting historic letter regarding PROGRESSIVE REPUBLICANS in TEXAS in the early 20th century. About the PROGRESSIVE REPUBLICAN ERA (from Wikipedia): ******During the 1910s and 1920s, progressives formed a faction in the Republican Party. They typically held center-left views on most issues, supporting broad government involvement in business, particularly breaking 'trusts' and limiting the size of corporations, reforms in government, income taxes, universal health care, and other forms of 'social justice'. This faction gradually shrank, with many joining the Democratic Party as it shifted to the left. He served as this party's state chairman and as a national committeeman from 1912 until his death. After Democrat Woodrow Wilson's victory Lyon worked to unify the Republican party in the state. He called for a meeting of reunification that convened in Dallas in March 1915 and served as the first step in healing political wounds. Lyon, however, played only a small role in that reunification, for he died on April 4, 1916. 1917 HENRY DINGLEY COOLIDGE - 35 HANDWRITTEN PAGES - LECTURE ON PARLIAMENTARY LAW & PROCEDURE. His personal, manuscript lecture notes, with many hand corrections and changes, for a lecture he gave at a "Parliamentary Club" meeting. The pages are hand numbered, some numbered "a" and "b" (e.g. 30a, 30b); 35 total pages. Handwritten on one side of 6" x 9" sheets of paper (a few sheets are somewhat smaller). Most of the paper is plain paper, originally blank on both sides. Some of the latter sheets are written on the blank backsides of paper that is printed with "THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS - 1917 - AN ACT" and associated information on the other side (i.e.the original printed documents were being reused as scrap paper for these lecture notes). The lecture notes are undated, insofar as I can tell, but I'm assuming 1917 based on the date on the printed backsides of a few sheets. Along with these lecture notes are 3 sealed envelopes with "HENRY DINGLEY COOLIDGE / CONCORD, MASSACHUSETTS" printed on the envelope flap (the envelopes are sealed, but there is nothing inside, and they are unopened); a piece of unused printed stationery; and a letter addressed to "Mr. Henry D. Coolidge, Clerk to the Senate, Concord, Mass." on "The Commonwealth of Massachusetts / Executive Chamber / State House, Boston" letterhead. The letter is signed by (?). It is in response to a recommendation by Coolidge for the appointment of Henry J. Walcott to some position or other. The letter is dated August 1, 1910. Condition: The sheets are toned and have some signs of light handling, wear and use; but overall they are clean, bright, clear and fully legible. About HENRY DINGLEY COOLIDGE (from the Internet): ******Massachusetts Senate Clerk Henry Dingley Coolidge (1858-1922). Coolidge, a direct descendant of Mayflower pilgrim William White, served as Clerk for the Massachusetts Senate for 33 years. He is known for writing the revised and updated "MANUAL FOR THE USE OF THE GENERAL COURT" in 1889, and a number of subsequent revisions of the same book. Henry D. Coolidge's General Court Manual became an important, standard, widely used. legal reference work.******

Four Page Handwritten Letter by SIR ERNEST BARKER, mostly a Critique of the book The Mind of Latin Christendom, by Edward Pickman (Published by Oxford, 1937). The letter is dated 17 Feb 1938. The letter is addressed to Mr. Pitman, a misspelling of Pickman. Though the book The Mind of Latin Christendom is not mentioned by name, this letter was part of a gathering of letters that Edward Pickman had amassed in response to his sending out his book for criticism to many of his friends and colleagues, and the subject matter clearly references his book. Written on a single fold sheet, 4 pages with letterhead on the first page, 5x8 inches. GOOD condition, a fold where the letter was folded to fit into an envelope (no envelope is present), the imprint of a paperclip to the top edge, some light spotting. About SIR ERNEST BARKER (from Wikipedia): ******Sir Ernest Barker, b. 1874 d. 1960, was an English political scientist who served as Principal of King's College London from 1920 to 1927. He was a don at Oxford, and spent a brief time at the London School of Economics. He was Principal of King's College London from 1920 to 1927, and subsequently became Professor of Political Science in the University of Cambridge in 1928, being the first holder of the chair endowed by the Rockefeller Foundation. In June 1936 he was elected to serve on the Liberal Party Council. He was knighted in 1944. He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1958. There is a memorial stone to him in St Botolph's Church, Cambridge.******

This is a landmark civil rights trial in which the plaintiff claims to have been unconstitutionally subjected to cruel and unusual punishment by the conditions at Soledad prison in 1965.

Robert Charles Jordan, Jr., Plaintiff v. C. J. Fitzharris et al, Defendants. Published by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, September 6, 1966. Memorandum Opinion and Order by U.S. District Court Chief Judge George B. Harris. Legal document, stapled bound typewritten sheets, 8.5" x 11", 22 pages. VERY GOOD Condition: light age toning, a small paperclip stain, tiny edge tears to rear cover, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

In 1966 a Black prisoner named Robert Charles Jordan, Jr. filed a lawsuit against the Superintendent of Soledad prison charging "cruel and unusual" punishment. What was surprising about this case was that the court found in Jordan's favor. Mr. Jordan was locked in solitary confinement in a "strip cell" at Soledad Prison. The complaint goes on to detail many more inhumane conditions and treatment. After the court ruled that Jordan had in fact been subjected to cruel and unusual punishment, the Superintendent of Soledad, Cletus Fitzharris, remained at the head of the prison for 5 more years. He was then promoted to deputy director of the California Department of Corrections. Robert Charles Jordan Jr. was born in 1939 and was 27 years old when he filed this case. He had been convicted at age 19 of assault and has remained, as of 2020, incarcerated in a California prison. The Eighth Amendment prohibits the infliction of cruel and unusual punishment. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s pushed (at national, and local levels and in legislatures and courts) to recognize that the government disproportionately policed, incarcerated, and oppressed people of color and the economically disadvantaged. Court litigation records like this detail the horrific treatment incarcerated people continue to endure in prison.
