FAIR condition, the covers are worn through along the edges, soiled, scraped, and stained at the top edge, nonetheless they are doing the job and the front cover illustration alone is worth the price of admission imho; internally, the front and rear hinges are cracking and tender, there is a half moon stain to the top margin of all the pages (as on the covers), the pages are lightly toned, and there is a small spot here and there. A worn but complete copy.

GOOD condition, the spine folds are tender and pulling from the textblock but holding, internally the pages are just lightly used, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A nice, complete, presentable copy.

LEO FRANK, a Jew, was tried and convicted for the 1913 murder of 13 year old Mary Phagan who worked at the factory where Frank was a superintendent. Frank was convicted based substantially on the testimony of Jim Conley, an African-American who worked as a janitor at the factory. Frank appealed his conviction and his last appeal was denied in April 2015. He was sentenced to life in prison. A few months later Leo Frank was pulled from his cell by an armed mob and lynched.

From Wikipedia: "Leo Frank and his lawyers made a series of unsuccessful appeals; their final appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States failed in April 1915. Considering arguments from both sides as well as evidence not available at trial, Governor John M. Slaton commuted Frank's sentence from capital punishment to life imprisonment. The case attracted national press attention and many reporters deemed the conviction a travesty. Within Georgia, this outside criticism fueled antisemitism and hatred toward Frank. On August 16, 1915, he was kidnapped from prison by a group of armed men, and lynched at Marietta, Mary Phagan's hometown, the next morning."

Anti-semitism and racism infested the trial of Leo Frank and continues to infest it today. Many historians believe Leo Frank was innocent and that Jim Conley was the real murderer, while others believe that trying to blame Conley is ongoing racism.

Overall, the pages are showing their age but are nonetheless complete, legible, and attractively rebound.

The Congressional Black Caucus was formed in 1970 when the 13 Black Members of the U.S. House of Representatives joined together to strengthen their efforts to address the legislative concerns of Black and minority citizens. African American Representatives had increased in number from six in 1966 to nine, following the 1969 elections. Those Members believed that a Black Caucus in Congress, speaking with a single voice, would provide political influence and visibility far beyond their numbers.

Internally, the endpapers have some foxing, toning, and offsetting from the leather covers; the loose front endpaper is chipped and creased along its edges; there is an early previous owner's signature on the title page; all the pages have old water staining / shorelining most noticeably in the upper gutter margin area but some spreads to other areas as well, it varies in intensity and amount but the text is always legible; there is foxing on some pages, some pages have edge wear and edge chips, the binding is split at a few places but holding with the sewn binding; despite its flaws this is a bright, clean, clear and unmarked copy, with text that is legible throughout.

This is a landmark civil rights trial in which the plaintiff claims to have been unconstitutionally subjected to cruel and unusual punishment by the conditions at Soledad prison in 1965.

Robert Charles Jordan, Jr., Plaintiff v. C. J. Fitzharris et al, Defendants. Published by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, September 6, 1966. Memorandum Opinion and Order by U.S. District Court Chief Judge George B. Harris. Legal document, stapled bound typewritten sheets, 8.5" x 11", 22 pages. VERY GOOD Condition: light age toning, a small paperclip stain, tiny edge tears to rear cover, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

In 1966 a Black prisoner named Robert Charles Jordan, Jr. filed a lawsuit against the Superintendent of Soledad prison charging "cruel and unusual" punishment. What was surprising about this case was that the court found in Jordan's favor. Mr. Jordan was locked in solitary confinement in a "strip cell" at Soledad Prison. The complaint goes on to detail many more inhumane conditions and treatment. After the court ruled that Jordan had in fact been subjected to cruel and unusual punishment, the Superintendent of Soledad, Cletus Fitzharris, remained at the head of the prison for 5 more years. He was then promoted to deputy director of the California Department of Corrections. Robert Charles Jordan Jr. was born in 1939 and was 27 years old when he filed this case. He had been convicted at age 19 of assault and has remained, as of 2020, incarcerated in a California prison. The Eighth Amendment prohibits the infliction of cruel and unusual punishment. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s pushed (at national, and local levels and in legislatures and courts) to recognize that the government disproportionately policed, incarcerated, and oppressed people of color and the economically disadvantaged. Court litigation records like this detail the horrific treatment incarcerated people continue to endure in prison.

The Journals include many important resolutions, including: A resolution to ABOLISH SLAVERY IN WESTERN COUNTRY (i.e. Western States yet to be established in the United States owned Western Territories). Senators from seven Northern States voted Ay, Senators from Maryland voted mixed but there was a tie-breaker third vote so the state voted Ay, and Senators from four Southern States voted NO. So the 1784 resolution ABOLISHING SLAVERY in any Western States to be formed out of U.S. Western Territory was PASSED.

Internally, the pages are toned and there is some foxing throughout, the latter pages have light shorelining to their upper margin area (printing is always fully legible); there is an old (circa 1870) Lombard University library bookplate on the front pastedown (Lombard University was founded in 1853, changed its name to Lombard College circa 1890, and finally shuttered in 1930); the front and rear inner hinges are cracked but holding well, the front free-endpaper is separating at its top 2 inches; there is edge wear including small closed edge tears and chips, folded corners, and a couple folded pages here and there; one page has a small whole; there is a previous owner's signature and date on the front free-endpaper (?? / Dec 9th, 1828), the number 178 written on the title page (copy 178?), and an early previous owner's signature at the top of the first page of text (B. Important treatise relating to the bronze tables of Heraclea datable between the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 3rd century BC. Found in a stream bed between 1732 and 1735 near Metaponto. The tablets are especially important for their look at Roman Law. They are now held in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

CONDITION: The covers are worn, scuffed, scraped and with light stains to the spine; the front cover is disbound as is the front free endpaper and the half title page; the rear cover is just hanging on with the binding cords. Internally, there is foxing to the first and last few pages, and a bit here and there; the last few pages have shorelining at the bottom gutter area not affecting text, the last page is age toned, the half title page is loose, is creased, and is worn at the disbound edge but it is present and still solid; overall the inner pages are very nice, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. The map and 10 plates are all in amazingly good condition, sturdy and feel rarely opened, they have some offsetting and age toning, and a few have a small tear to the edge of a bottom fold where the plate is bound in, but that is it, no significant tears and all are bright, clean and clear.

******The Heraclean Tablets (in older texts: the Heraclean Table(s); in Latin: Tabulae Heracleenses) were bronze tablets found a short distance from the site of Heraclea Lucania, between it and Metapontum. They are significant for the study of Roman Law.

As a consequence of its having accepted Roman citizenship in 89 BCE, Heraclea became a municipium, and the Tabulae Heracleenses contain a long Latin inscription relating to the municipal regulations of Heraclea, which is a part of a copy of a more general law, the Lex Iulia Municipalis, issued in 45 BCE for the regulation of the municipal institutions of towns throughout Italy. This document is a major authority for the municipal law of ancient Italy; it is engraved on two tablets of bronze, on the back of which is a long Greek inscription of earlier date, probably the 3rd century BC, defining the boundaries of lands belonging to various temples.

The tablets were separate, and the major one was in two fragments. They were found in 1732, and 1735, in the bed of the Cavone river. The tablets are now in the Naples National Archaeological Museum.

The Latin inscription was first published by Michel Maittaire in 1735. Both inscriptions were published with commentaries, by Alessio Simmacho Mazzocchi, b.1684 d.1771, in Naples in 1754, 1755.******

STORACE (Alfonso Maria Storace), Tomaso 16, Napoli (Naples)" on the front free endpaper. Alfonso Maria Storace wrote, among other things, a book titled: Ricerche Storiche Intorno al Comune di s. Antimo (Historical Research of the City of Sant'Antimo, Italy), which was published in Naples, Italy, in 1887. There is a circular ink stamp on the front pastedown showing that this book once was in the Library of Rev. L. KUENZEL (LESTER HENRY KUENZEL, aka Reverend L. Kunzel, Father Lester H. Kuenzel). He wrote, among other things, "A Manual of the Ceremonies of Low Mass" which was published in New York in 1930. And there is also a small, recent bookplate on the front pastedown with the letters "SAG". Condition: Remnants of a shelving label on the spine, spine lettering has rubbed away, some yellowing and soiling to the vellum covers, inner hinges cracked but holding, inner pages are toned, some quite heavily, but the printing is always legible. was a French jurist and professor of law at the University of Bourges. After studies in Paris under Budé and in Bourges, Douaren worked as an advocate for the Parlement of Paris. In 1538, he was called to teach at Bourges. Following a bitter dispute with Baro, he abandoned the chair for Paris until Baro's death in 1550, after which Douaren returned to teach at Bourges. Like his compatriots Jacques Cujas, François Hotman and Hugues Doneau, Douaren was one of the leading representatives of the legal humanist school of thought within the science of Roman law on the European continent. These 16th century French law professors applied the philological methods of the Italian humanists to legal texts. It was their aim to arrive at a historically more accurate understanding of the texts of the Roman Corpus Iuris Civilis. In addition to numerous commentaries on the Corpus, Douaren wrote a leading commentary on the Roman law of obligations, Commentarius de pactis (1544), which greatly influenced modern theories of obligations. His 1544 programme of studies, De ratione docendi discendique iuris epistola, was the first statement of the mos gallicus, the French Humanist approach to higher education. There is a lovely, early Armorial Bookplate on the front pastedown, with the initials "G.A.V.S." GOOD condition: The covers are chipped at the head of spine, splitting but holding well at the spine folds, and rubbed with some scrapes to the leather and paper covering. Internally, the front hinge is cracked but holding well, the pages are toned with the early and latter pages somewhat darker than the rest; overall this 1755 book remains tight, bright, clean, clear, and unmarked. A solid, presentable copy. This early law book was oft reprinted. While early editions are hard to find, the 1755 FIRST EDITION is almost impossible to find. About CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH GEORG MEISTER (excerpted from various Internet sources): Christian Friedrich Georg Meister, b. 1718 d. 1782, received his doctorate from the University of Göttingen in 1741. He began his law career first as a private lawyer and highly sought after law lecturer. In 1754 he became a full professor of Law at the University of Gottingen. He quickly became one the University's most important law professors. In 1755 he wrote what is considered his most important and influential work, the PRINCIPIA JURIS CRIMINALIS.******

ROSENMAN (from Wikipedia): ******Samuel Irving Rosenman (b. 1896 d. 1973) was an American lawyer, judge, Democratic Party activist and presidential speechwriter. He coined the term NEW DEAL, and helped articulate liberal policies during the heyday of the New Deal coalition. He was the first person to hold the position of White House Counsel. Rosenman was a senior advisor to presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. Under their administrations, he was a leading figure in the war crimes issue. He was also the first official White House Counsel, then called Special Counsel. He was a speechwriter under both presidents, helping Roosevelt with his speeches from his days as governor. Four Page Handwritten Letter by SIR ERNEST BARKER, mostly a Critique of the book The Mind of Latin Christendom, by Edward Pickman (Published by Oxford, 1937). The letter is dated 17 Feb 1938. The letter is addressed to Mr. Pitman, a misspelling of Pickman. Though the book The Mind of Latin Christendom is not mentioned by name, this letter was part of a gathering of letters that Edward Pickman had amassed in response to his sending out his book for criticism to many of his friends and colleagues, and the subject matter clearly references his book. Written on a single fold sheet, 4 pages with letterhead on the first page, 5x8 inches. GOOD condition, a fold where the letter was folded to fit into an envelope (no envelope is present), the imprint of a paperclip to the top edge, some light spotting. About SIR ERNEST BARKER (from Wikipedia): ******Sir Ernest Barker, b. 1874 d. 1960, was an English political scientist who served as Principal of King's College London from 1920 to 1927. He was a don at Oxford, and spent a brief time at the London School of Economics.
