Pagination as follows: blank leaf; half title page, printer information on verso; title page, blank verso; I-IV; Errata page, blank verso; ad for author's previous book, blank verso; 1-116 (text and index); blank leaf. This volume is from the library of SIR WILLIAM STIRLING-MAXWELL (b. 1818 d. 1878) 9th Baronet KT of Pollok, a historian, politician, and a renowned collector of books on proverbs. This book has his bookplate on the front pastedown and the bookplate of his Keir Collection of Books on Proverbs on the rear pastedown. This book is described by Stirling-Maxwell on page 10 of the book he wrote titled "An essay towards a collection of books relating to proverbs, emblems, apophthegms, epitaphs and ana, being a catalogue of those at Keir" (privately printed 1860). This book was Custom Bound for Sir William Stirling Maxwell by Maclehose, Glasgow. The binder's name is printed at the top of the front pastedown. This custom binding has Stirling's coat of arms and motto blind embossed on the front cover, and his monogram on the rear cover. A little research shows that William Stirling Maxwell used many different coats of arms and monograms on his bookplates and books over time. CONDITION: THE FRONT COVER IS DETACHED (i.e. laid on loosely), the covers are worn at the folds, corners and edges, the rear hinge is split but the rear cover is holding by the sewn binding; internally, there is foxing throughout but the pages and printing remain bright and clear; there is wear and roughness to some of the bottom page edges, possibly from being cut open roughly, not affecting text, there is a small silver bookstore label of LILLIPUT BOOKS / TOKYO on the rear pastedown with a price of 84,000 yen, equal to $758 as I type this (Lilliput Books, Tokyo, was the first bookstore in the world dedicated exclusively to miniature books, it closed in 2015). Overall, a quite nice copy with a detached front cover. RARE BOOK (WorldCat shows only one copy of this title, and that copy is held at

the Bibliothèque Nationale de France / the National Library of France), made ESPECIALLY RARE with the CUSTOM BINDING and BOOKPLATES of the proverb collector WILLIAM STIRLING MAXWELL. About William Stirling Maxwell (from Wikipedia): ******Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, 9th Baronet KT, of Pollok (8 March 1818 - 15 January 1878), was a Scottish historical writer and art historian, politician, and virtuoso. UNTIL 1865 HE WAS KNOWN AS WILLIAM STIRLING, and several of his books were published under that name. He was Chancellor of the University of Glasgow from 1875 until his death and was also a Knight of the Thistle, considered the highest honour which can be conferred by the Crown on a Scotsman.******

First Edition of Volume VI. Hardcovers, leather covered spine and corners with pebbled cloth covered boards, 5.5x7.5 inches, 384 pages. Illustrated with drawings and fancy title letters. Y FRYTHONES was a monthly Welsh language periodical for women, with much of the contents written by women of Wales. The contents were religious, literary, and general in nature, including articles on religion, raising children, the family, and the home, as well as poetry, music, games and biographies of prominent women. All was in Welsh. The periodical was edited by the teacher, poet, and unconventional woman, Sarah Jane Rees. The periodical was founded in 1874 and ended publication in 1891. It was created to continue the work of the Welsh women's periodical Y GYMRAES which was published for only two years, 1850 and 1851. Y GYMRAES was created in response to a government report which had strongly criticized the lax morals of Welsh women. Both Y GYMRAES and then Y FRYTHONES set out to promote higher intellectual and moral standards for women in Wales. Previously owned by KATIE HUMPHREYS, with her bookplate on the front free endpaper, and by ROBERT OWEN, with his small ink stamped name on the front free endpaper and title page. At the bottom of the front pastedown is a small label of A. BROMLEY / Printer, Lithographer, Bookbinder, &c / High Street / BANGOR (WALES). It appears likely that KATIE HUMPHREYS and ROBERT OWEN were both from Bangor Wales, as both names show up prominently there. GOOD CONDITION: the leather spine covering is scraped and rubbed, and the leather corners are rubbed at their edges; the pebbled cloth covered boards have a few smudges; otherwise the coverts remain solid and are doing their job well; internally there is a bit of foxing and some creases here and there, else the pages are tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid, nice copy. About CRAGOGWEN, pseudonym of SARAH JANE REES (from Wikipedia): ******Sarah Jane Rees, b.1839 d.1916, also known as CRANOGWEN, was a Welsh poet, editor, teacher, temperance campaigner, and proto-suffragette. She had two long lesbian relationships. Sarah Jane Rees was born at Llangrannog in Cardiganshire, the daughter of a mariner John Rees. She was a precocious child and insisted that she accompany her father to sea rather than undertake sewing and cooking chores. She attended school in both Cardigan and New Quay, and for a time studied at a navigation school in London, where she gained her master's certificate, a qualification allowing her to command a ship in any part of the world. In 1859 Sarah Jane set up her own navigation school in her home village of Llangrannog. In addition to teaching navigation and other subjects, she became editor of the Welsh language women's periodical Y Frythones (1878 to 1889), a platform for Welsh bluestockings and proto-suffragettes. Rees had two significant same-sex relationships. Her first was with Fanny Rees, a milliner's daughter from Troedyraur, near LLangrannog. Fanny contracted tuberculosis and returned to Wales around 1874 to die. She moved into Rees' home rather than that of her family, and died in her arms. Rees commemorated Fanny in one of her best-known poems, Fy Ffrynd (My Friend). Her second relationship was with Jane Thomas, with whom she spent most of her life. Open about her unconventional domestic arrangement, Rees was nonetheless a committed Methodist.******

JORNAL DE LETRAS - ANO II - RIO DE JANEIRO - JANEIRO 1950 through DEZEMBRO 1950. Twelve Issues bound together in hardcovers.

A HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT, BOUND COLLECTION of this BRAZILIAN LITERARY NEWSPAPER, that was also VERY POLITICAL.

ARTICLES on BRAZILIAN WRITERS and POETS of the DAY, International Authors of Note, and other Arts, including Music (especially Black Jazz), Painting, and Cinema.

Many of the articles became very political, as Brazilian Writers and Poets began to rebel against Brazilian authority, restrictions, and right wing politics.

Very large format newspapers bound together in hardcovers, black paper covered boards title written in white on the spine: "Jornal de Letras No. 7-18", 13x18.5".

Monthly Brazilian Literary Newspaper, published in Rio de Janeiro. 12 issues, from January 1950 through December 1950.

The newspaper issues were presumably bound by the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY, because there is an Ex-Libris Stamp of the "Berkeley Library / University of California" on the front pastedown.

Many (most?) of the issues seem to have 16 pages. All contain lots of Brazilian Literature and other Arts related articles, as well as Brazilian / Rio ads.

CONDITION: The covers have rubs, scrapes, and pokes; the spine ends are worn; overall the covers remain sturdy and are doing their job. Internally, the pages are toned, as is normal; the pages all have wear, including chipping, to their edges; some pages have edge tears that extend an inch or two; the pages are tender especially at the edges and edge pieces can come off easily; nonetheless, the issues are in generally GOOD condition, most pages are solid (though fragile at the edges), all are legible and clean, kept that way by having been nicely bound and probably very rarely used. The issues provide a great window into the Literary Blossoming and its Political Stance in Brazil in 1950.

I tried to provide enough images to give you a good idea of the types of articles and illustrations contained in these issues.

I found a Brazilian website that discusses the early years of JORNAL DE LETRAS, 1949-1951. Here is the original Portuguese TEXT of the site:

AND HERE IS THE TEXT AS GOOGLE TRANSLATED IT:

******Curiosities of Literature Journal 1949-1951, by: Robert Fraga, March 27, 2013.

The literary journal was a publication...edited by José Condé and his brothers John and Elysio Condé. It was an art panorama of Rio de Janeiro and also of the nation.

In these journals, if you have the privilege of seeing an early JORNAL copy, you may see the artistic life of the great figures of the arts and literature.

The publication was also a bit of artists gossip magazine, showing scenes of day-to-day city life, tidbits and routines in the Brazilian Academy of Letters, opinions, and even artistic nitpicking related advertising.******

The inside rear cover has the number stamp "855", which probably indicates this is copy #855. Great ASSOCIATION COPY. The previous owner was the actor JACK PALANCE, with a "JACK PALANCE COLLECTION" BOOKPLATE from the 2006 auction of his personal property that took place just months before his death. What makes the PALANCE association most interesting is that JACK PALANCE STARRED AS FIDEL CASTRO in the 1969 film CHE!, about Latin American revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara. Softcovers / Wrappers, pocketbook size 4x7", 165 pages. Condition: The title page has been trimmed for 1/4" at its front (or perhaps gutter)edge, leaving it 1/4" shorter at the front than the other pages.

It is possible that the title page was excised and sent to Cintio Vitier for his signature and then reattached upon its return with signature, because the page looks a bit like it was tipped in, though very well done. Perhaps this was done by Palance himself, wanting a memento of his role as Fidel Castro. Otherwise the book, including the title page, is in FINE condition, tight, bright, sharp and clean. The spine is not creased, the book looks and feels unread. 1978 FIRST EDITION, LIMITED EDITION, SIGNED by AUTHOR, with JACK PALANCE ASSOCIATION. Rare as such. About CINTIO VITIER (from Wikipedia): ******Cintio Vitier (1921-2009) was a Cuban poet, essayist, and novelist. Vitier won the Cuban National Prize for Literature (1988), the Juan Rulfo Prize (2002), and the medal of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. He also received the title of Official of Arts and Letters of France. Upon winning the Juan Rulfo Prize, the award jury called him "one of the most important writers of his generation".****** About the Jack Palance 2006 Auction (from a 2006 article found on the Internet): ******Movie cowboy empties his saddlebags. Jack Palance's collection up for auction at his farm. October 10, 2006|By Diana Morse Of The Morning Call. Auctioneers will put more than 3,000 items collected over a five-decade career by veteran actor Jack Palance on the block Thursday. The auction will be held at Palance's Holly-Brooke farm near Hazleton. Palance, 87, is perhaps best known for his Oscar winning role as Curly in 1991's CITY SLICKERS and his chilling portrayal of the hired gunslinger Wilson in the 1953 western SHANE. The retired Palance is now living in California. Jim Chamberlin of Keystone State Auctioneers reports a lot of interest in the three-day auction.******
