Helen Granville-Barker, b.? d.1950, was a third rate playwright, poet and novelist, mostly remembered for being the second wife and ruination of Harley Granville-Barker who was the great hope of British theatre.

"No history of British theatre would be complete without the acknowledgement of Harley Granville Barker's importance as playwright, director, producer, actor, essayist and theatre visionary in the first decades of the twentieth century. However, after the First World War he abandoned the professional theatre, and the prime culprit for this abandonment was his American second wife, Helen Huntington. A rich dilettante, third rate poet and second rate novelist, Helen, it is claimed, seduced Barker and turned him into a reclusive, snobbish country gentleman. Her visceral hatred of the theatre and all theatre people forced him to withdraw from lifelong friends and colleagues, thus cutting himself off from his true nature and his true talent. To complete all this horror, she even made her new husband add a hyphen to their name to assuage her own crass aristocratic ambitions. Working out of a small San Francisco studio known as '"The Press at Tuscany Valley," Mr. Wilson designed and printed scores of books. His many volumes, while little known to the general public, are famous among print connoisseurs, and many are collectors' items.

In 1983, Mr. Wilson won a MacArthur Fellowship.

He is survived by his wife and by his daughter, Melissa Wilson Marshall, of San Francisco.******

In the text, James Carver tells about growing up with his brother Raymond and reveals biographical information that has not appeared elsewhere, not even in the last major biography of Carver. There are also 10 5x7 inch b&w photographs taken from Carver's personal family photo album. Some of these photos are shown here for the first time.

Clare Consuelo Sheridan (née Frewen) b.1885 d.1970, was an English sculptor, journalist and writer known primarily for creating busts of the famous (including her cousin Winston Churchill) and writing diaries recounting her worldly travels. She enjoyed travelling around the world; and among her circle of friends were Princess Margaret of Sweden, Lord and Lady Mountbatten, Lady Diana Cooper, Vita Sackville-West and Vivien Leigh. GOOD MINUS condition: The covers are worn at the corners and edges, the spine covering is missing its top 1 inch, has some scrapes, and is splitting at the bottom rear fold for about 2 inches, the front cover has a stiff and tender crease where it was attached to the front free endpaper, nonetheless these original covers are still holding and doing their job; there is a crease to the upper front corner of the book leaving a crease at that corner of the covers and inner pages; internally the staples binding the text block are rusting, the pages are tight, bright, clean and clear. A used copy that remains solid and presentable.

A wonderful Signed and Inscribed copy with a great Association to an impressive English woman.

About George Sterling (from Wikipedia):

******George Sterling, b.1869 d.1926, was an American writer based in the San Francisco, California Bay Area and Carmel by the Sea. He was considered a prominent poet and playwright and proponent of Bohemianism during the first quarter of the twentieth century. His work was admired by writers as diverse as Jack London, Upton Sinclair, Theodore Dreiser, and Sinclair Lewis.

In 1905 Sterling moved to Carmel by the Sea, California, an undeveloped coastal area, and soon established a settlement for like minded Bohemian writers. Carmel had been discovered by Charles Warren Stoddard and others, but Sterling made it world famous.

Sterling joined the Bohemian Club and acted in their theatrical productions each summer at the Bohemian Grove. For the Grove play of 1907 the Club presented Sterling's "The Triumph of Bohemia".

Sterling carried a vial of cyanide for many years. In November 1926, Sterling used it while at his residence at the San Francisco Bohemian Club. Kevin Starr wrote that "When George Sterling's corpse was discovered in his room at the Bohemian Club... the golden age of San Francisco's bohemia had definitely come to a miserable end."******

From the Broadside: "Within a very few years of the publication of my Collected Poems (1938)... I renounced further trying the way of poetry... saying: I would write no more poems - and I wrote no more poems... (however) I wrote for (a close friend), in the 1978 Christmastime, a poem, marked as a poem for him only, giving it the title HOW A POEM CAME TO BE. I kept no copy of this privately written and given poem, and forgot the writing and the giving of it... I chanced, recently, to tell my friend of receiving a request for a poem to publish in broadside form from the Lord John Press, indicating my feeling some surprise that Mr. Yellin, the Press's director, should not have been aware that FOR FORTY YEARS there had been NO NEW POEMS of mine. But my friend reminded me that about a year ago there HAD been a new poem - the one I wrote for him; and he urged me to let him release it to me from its private status of being a poem for him only... I give here the poem, given him, to be out in the world..."

LAURA RIDING JACKSON, b.1901 d.1991, was an iconoclastic American Poet. She left New England at the age of 25 to live with ROBERT GRAVES and his wife, Nancy Nicholson. The triangle did not suit her, and Laura Riding tried to commit suicide in 1927. Thereafter Robert Graves divorced his wife and lived together with Laura Riding in Majorca, France, England and Switzerland, and even went with her when she returned to the United States. They bitterly broke up in 1939. In 1941 Laura Riding Jackson renounced poetry, married Schuyler B. Jackson, and lived quietly with him in Wabasso, Florida, until her death in 1991. In the 60s, 70s and 80s she wrote a number of pieces explaining her reasons for renouncing poetry, but no poetry. This is apparently THE ONLY POEM written by Laura Riding Jackson since 1941.

INSCRIBED, SIGNED and DATED by JOHN HOLMES, Poet and Tufts University Professor of Literature and Poetry, and PRESENTED to his then student JOHN CIARDI. "John Ciardi, HIS Book, / on and after Dec. 7, 1937 / from John Holmes". Clearly this was John Holmes' personal copy which he was gifting to John Ciardi. Ruth Pitter must have a favorite poet of both of these male poets. Several of the poems have brief handwritten pencil notes and marks beside and on them, likely by either John Holmes or John Ciardi. FAIR condition, the covers are soiled, the spine is sunned / darkened and its lettering is no longer visible; internally there is glue remnant to the front free endpaper likely from the removal of a bookplate, light toning to the pages, otherwise tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid copy. An interesting intersection of John Holmes, John Ciardi, and Ruth Pitter, all in one place. This was the first work published in the University of Detroit's Contemporary Poets Series.

Hardcover Book in Dustjacket, 8.5x9 inches, 88 pages.

Condition: VERY GOOD book, the gilt titling on the spine has mostly rubbed away, otherwise sharp, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. In a GOOD dustjacket that has closed tears to

the front fold and a couple small closed edge tears (all of which have been repaired and reinforced with clear tape on the blank backside), and a bit of spine end wear, otherwise the dj is bright, clear, and doing its job well, and it retains its original $4.00 printed price at the top of the front flap.

The chapbook is HAND SIGNED and WARMLY INSCRIBED by both WILLIAM DUFFY and ROBERT BLY, and also has a POSTCARD SIGNED by ROBERT BLY laid in. WILLIAM DUFFY Signed and Inscribed on the half title page: "For Gordon / Our wonderful friend / Please, always, always come to Marilyn and me. / Yours / Marilyn and Bill Duffy". ROBERT BLY Signed and Inscribed all over the title page: "For Celia and Greg and Patrick / "I am doing nothing, so I read old books!" / The poems still look good to me / "Again the wild boar of the forest is in me" Bill / Duffy says I wish we had someone like (?) running for President / Yours / Robert Bly / Feb 12, 92". (The first quote in the inscription "I am doing nothing, so I read old books!" is a play of words on one of Bly's translations in the book that reads "I am doing nothing, so I read old poems." I suppose Bly is referring to the fact that he is rereading his old book The Lion's Tail and Eyes. The second quote in the inscription is Robert Bly quoting one of the lines from a Bill Duffy poem in the book.) There is also a laid in postcard SIGNED by ROBERT BLY and with the return address label of Robert Bly. The postcard is addressed to Greg Ross, presumably the Greg in Bly's inscription on the title page. Wrappers / Softcovers, 5.5x8.5 inches, 45 pages. Published by the Sixties Press, Odin House, Madison, Minnesota. This poetry chapbook contains 10 poems each by Robert Bly, James Wright and William Duffy. It contains the first published poem by Robert Bly, and the William Duffy poem Lying In A Hammock At William Duffy's Farm. GOOD MINUS condition, the covers have some foxing and soiling, sunning and creasing to the spine, and some corner and edge wear; the front flap is clipped at its bottom corner, there is a sticker ghost on the half title page; the top page corners are lightly creased; otherwise still tight, bright, clean and clear. The postcard has a 1992 postmark. It is in Near Fine condition. One of the more wonderfully inscribed copies of this influential chapbook that I have seen, with a nice signed postcard from Bly to boot.

CHILDREN ON THEIR BIRTHDAYS. An UNPRODUCED SCREENPLAY Adapted for the Screen by DONNA KANTER and SUSAN BEST, from the Short Story by TRUMAN CAPOTE. This screenplay was DONNA KANTER'S 1983 DIRECTOR'S PROJECT while in the AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE (AFI) DIRECTING WORKSHOP FOR WOMEN. She was in the class of 1982-1984. The screenplay is a First Draft dated July 23, 1983. Photocopied on plain 8.5x11 inch paper, stapled at the upper corner, 34 pages plus a title page, printed on one side only. GOOD MINUS condition, the first and last pages have creases and soiling, there are numerous staple holes at the upper left corner (though only one staple currently holds the pages together), some pages are dog eared at their top or bottom corner, and their are general signs of handling and use; still a complete copy of an interesting screenplay resulting from the AFI's attempts to get more women into film directing. Though this early, student screenplay was never filmed, its creation at the AFI Directing Workshop for Women certainly had an impact on Donna Kanter. She later established a successful Television and Film Production Company, The Donna Kanter Company. RAYMOND who was twice MAYOR of NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, and a friend of Huneker. The book is one of 1200 SIGNED and NUMBERED copies.

However, THIS COPY has "Presentation" handwritten by Huneker instead of a number, and the HANDWRITTEN INSCRIPTION:"For Thomas L. Raymond / My friend The Mayor / James Huneker" below the printed statement of limitation. In addition, Huneker has hand corrected a single work on the last page, crossing out the word "lamp" and changing it to "map". Published by Boni & Liveright, New York, 1920. First Edition. Hardcover Book in Dustjacket, vellum spine and blue paper covered boards, spine title label with gilt titling and gilt border, 6.5x10 inches, 294 pages plus 2 unnumbered final pages. With blue paper DUSTJACKET (same textured blue paper as used on the endpapers) that is printed in black on the spine with the title and the following statement: "Privately Printed For Subscribers Only". This special Presentation Copy comes with a Presentation Slipcase and Chemise (a folding encasement that protects the book when it slides in and out of the slipcase).

The slipcase is half leather with five raised spine bands and gilt lettering, including the words "PRESENTATION COPY" and the place/date "NEW YORK 1920". James Huneker died in 1921, the year after he signed and presented this copy. Condition: VERY GOOD BOOK, light sunning and a bit of corner tip wear to the covers, overall tight, bright, clean and clear, a solid, very nice book; in a complete but only FAIR DUSTJACKET, fair because the dj is completely split along the front spine fold and is starting to split on the rear spine fold and both splits have been repaired / reinforced with clear tape on the backside of the dj, the dj is also sunned / toned at the spine; in a VERY GOOD CHEMISE; in a GOOD PLUS SLIPCASE that has some rubs/scrapes to the spine and to the front corners but is still solid, lovely and doing its job well. Chapbook / Booklet, heavy stock paper covers, paper title label on the front cover, string bound, 5.5x8.5 inches, six numbered pages of poems, plus an unnumbered Title Page, Contents Page, and Colophon Page. The poems are: CHAUVINISM, by Juan Ortega; ANARCHIST PORTRAIT IN CALIFORNIA, by Norman Macleod; LAST PRELUDE, by Lawrence A. F., by Frank Ankenbrand, Jr. GOOD condition, a bit of wear to the corner tips, a small area of light shorelining to the top edge of the title page; overall remains tight, bright, clean and unmarked. One of the nicer copies this delicate chapbook that I have seen.

12:01 P.M. First Revision SCREENPLAY by JONATHAN HEAP and STEPHEN TOLKIN. Based on a Short Story by RICHARD LUPOFF. 12:01 P.M. is a short film based on the 1973 science fiction short story by Richard Lupoff. It was first shown in 1990 and was nominated for an Academy Award. Many believe that Groundhog Day stole the idea for its film from 12:01 P.M. A different film based on the story 12:01 P.M. was released in 1993. Copy machine printed on plain white paper (photocopied drafts were, and still are, used for production and working scripts because they can be easily made and quickly sent to a film's writers, producers, directors, etc.), 8.5x11 inches, 3 hole punched but bound with staples at the upper left corner, 25 pages plus title page, pages printed on one side only. GOOD MINUS condition, the pages are creased at all their corners, the title page is creased with some small tears along its left edge, there is wear around the two upper staples including some extra staple holes and staple impressions, the last page has pulled from the staples (i.e. is loose), otherwise a complete, clean, clear copy. SCARCE FIRST REVISED DRAFT of this groundbreaking science fiction short film. It is the only copy I have and the only copy I have ever seen. About the 1990 film 12:01 P.M. (from Wikipedia): ******12:01 PM is a 1990 short film starring Kurtwood Smith. Directed by Jonathan Heap, it originally aired on cable television in 1990 as part of the Showtime 30 Minute Movie anthology series. It was nominated for an Academy Award.

It is the first film adaptation of the short story "12:01 PM" by Richard A. Lupoff, which was published in the December 1973 edition of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. The major plot device is a time loop or time bounce, and bears great similarity to that of the 1993 film Groundhog Day. Lupoff and Jonathan Heap, director of the 1990 film, were "outraged" by the apparent theft of their idea, but after six months of lawyers conferences and substantial expenses, they decided to drop the case against Columbia Pictures. In the 1990 film, Kurtwood Smith plays Myron Castleman, an everyman stuck in a loop that forces him to constantly relive the same hour of his life over and over, being the only person aware of this. During one loop, he discovers that a scientist named Nathan Rosenbluth has predicted an event that matches his experience. Castleman calls him and explains what is going on, however, Rosenbluth is highly skeptical of his claims. Over the next loops, Myron struggles to get into contact with Rosenbluth again, and in the process becomes frustrated to the point of screaming at his secretary and throwing his suitcase into traffic. Eventually, he does manage to talk to Rosenbluth, who initially dismisses Myron as crazy until Myron describes the transition as the scientist had predicted (including the phrase "Consciousness is an independent variable," which is central to Rosenbluth's theories). The professor sadly informs Castleman that there is nothing that can be done, causing Myron to become hysterical and shoot himself. There is a brief pause until Myron finds himself back at the beginning of the loop, realizing that he is trapped for eternity. This version has NEVER BEEN RELEASED ON DVD IN THE U.S. In the 1993 film the main character keeps reliving the same 24 hour period (which in this case restarts at one minute past midnight, rather than midday as in the other versions). This version differs from the 1990 film in that it features a much lighter and more comedic tone, and that the protagonist ultimately finds a way to correct the time loop over the course of the film. This version was released on DVD in the United States on November 28, 2006.******

KRISTIN. Screenplay by ERNEST PASCAL. From the Novel KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER by SIGRID UNDSET. The screenplay is undated but perhaps circa 1960 (Ernest Pascal died in 1966). The novel Kristin Lavransdatter was first published in 1921 and has been in print ever since. This screenplay by Ernest Pascal was never produced. The only film of the novel that I am aware of is a 1995 Swedish Film directed by Liv Ullmann. That film, in Swedish, has no relation to this screenplay. Photocopied on plain white paper (photo offset copies were, and still are, common among production and working scripts; drafts could be quickly made and sent to the film's writers, producers, directors, etc.), 8.5x11 inches, 170 pages printed on one side only, pages are 3-hole punched and bound in heavy stock yellow paper covers with 2 brass brads. VERY GOOD condition, the covers have some light soiling and edgewear, otherwise the script is tight, bright, clean and unmarked. GRAHAM GREENE - EARLY DRAFT SCREENPLAY of his NOVEL "HONORARY CONSUL". Screenplay by John Melson. This draft is dated February 1, 1976, years before the film finally went into production and seven years before the film was released.

It appears that this 1976 draft was being produced by Capricorn Productions of Venice, California. The company name / address / phone stamp is on the title page. It also appears that this project was being shopped by PAUL KOHNER, a Hollywood Super Agent. Laid in is his handwritten note on his letterhead that states: "NO / (Returned?) by (??) / Not very high on it. / Do you still want / discuss with him?" Also in the hand of Paul Kohner is a note on the title page: "Return to Pamela" which is then circled along with the company stamp of Capricorn Productions.

This 1976 John Melson draft was apparently NEVER used. Capricorn Productions abandoned the movie project. Norma Heyman later took on the task of producing a film version of the book and another writer, Christopher Hampton, was brought in to write the screenplay. The title of the film was CHANGED to BEYOND THE LIMIT for its U.S. release, but retained the title HONORARY CONSUL for the U.K.

(Interesting Note: By producing the film The Honorary Consul, Norma Heyman, born 1940, became the first British woman to produce an independent feature film by herself.)
