Vellum covers, 6.5x8.5 inches (16.5x22 cm). Pagination: [16] 343 pages. Text in French.

ILLUSTRATED with a title page vignette, 2 folding engraved plates, 20 full-page engravings in text, a few other small engravings, 6 engraved tables in text, woodcut diagrams, and quite intricate engraved head-pieces, tail-pieces and initial letters.

Previously owned by a Fitz-Patrick who was apparently a Lord, Earl, or Baron of Upper Ossory. His bookplate is on the inside front cover, loosely mounted with a One Penny King George V Postage Revenue stamp. I do not know which FitzPatrick this is, but you can find the long genealogy of the Lords and Earls of Fitzpatrick on the Internet.

Condition: The vellum covers have yellowed and are splitting a bit at the spine folds, the rear cover has spotting, water damage and wrinkling; still these full vellum covers are solid and attractive in a Harry Potter Hogwarts Library way. Internally, the front inner hinge has split but is holding on by several cords, the pages have toned with age but are fully and easily legible, the blank front free endpaper has worming, some small paper repairs, and is coming loose from the binding, the title page and the next few pages have a bit of worming, the title page is trimmed for 3/4 inch at the top (perhaps to remove a previous owner's name) and an old water stain, there is some waterstaining / shorelining to the upper gutter area of some of the pages, the latter pages (especially 325-340 and the endpapers) have water staining / shorelining to their upper area (about 1/3 of the page), the rear blank endpaper has some paper repairs and a few lines written in Latin; otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clear, clean, and fully legible. A presentable copy that is complete including all plates and illustrations. I would consider this over 350 year old book to certainly be in GOOD condition for its age.

Occult truth straight from the 17th century to you.

A complete copy of this SCARCE 1904 work on the Freemason and Occultist, Cagliostro, by the noted historian Henri d'Almeras.

    About CAGLIOSTRO (from Wikipedia):

******Count Alessandro di Cagliostro, b.1743 d.1795, was the alias of the occultist Giuseppe Balsamo (Joseph Balsamo).

Cagliostro was an Italian adventurer and self-styled magician. He became a glamorous figure associated with the royal courts of Europe where he pursued various occult arts, including psychic healing, alchemy and scrying. His reputation lingered for many decades after his death, but continued to deteriorate, as he came to be regarded as a charlatan and impostor, this view fortified by the savage attack of Thomas Carlyle in 1833, who pronounced him the Quack of Quacks. W.R.H. Trowbridge in his Cagliostro: the Splendour and Misery of a Master of Magic (1910), attempted a rehabilitation.

Portuguese author Camilo Castelo Branco credits to Balsamo the creation of the Egyptian Rite of the Freemasons and intensive work in the diffusion of Freemasonry, by opening lodges all over Europe and by introducing the acceptance of women into the community. Occult historian Lewis Spence comments in his entry on Cagliostro that the swindler put his finagled wealth to good use by starting and funding a chain of maternity hospitals and orphanages around the continent. Occultist Aleister Crowley believed Cagliostro was one of his previous incarnations.******

About the INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF CRYPTOZOOLOGY (from Wikipedia):

******The International Society of Cryptozoology was an organization dedicated to the field of cryptozoology founded in 1982 in Washington, D.C. It ceased to exist in 1998.

It was founded to serve as a center for documenting and evaluating topics of interest to cryptozoologists. The study of such animals is known as cryptozoology, and Cryptozoology was also the title of its journal. The President was Bernard Heuvelmans, and the Vice-President Roy Mackal. Loren Coleman, John Willison Green, and several other prominent cryptozoologists were either Life Members, Honorary Members, or Board Members.

The official emblem of the society was the okapi, which was chosen because, although it was well known to the inhabitants of its region, it was unknown to the European scientific community until the English explorer Harry Johnston sent to London an okapi skin which received international attention in 1901.

The journal Cryptozoology was published from 1982 to 1996.

The ISC ended its activities in 1998 due to financial problems.

According to the journal Cryptozoology, the ISC served as a focal point for the investigation, analysis, publication, and discussion of all matters related to animals of unexpected form or size, or unexpected occurrence in time or space.******

    About PETRUS BONUS (from Wikipedia):

******Petrus Bonus was a late medieval alchemist. He is best known for his Precious Pearl (Latin: Margarita Preciosa) or Precious New Pearl (Margarita Preciosa Novella), an influential alchemical text composed sometime between 1330 and 1339. He was said to have been a physician at Ferrara in Italy, causing him to sometimes be known as Petrus Bonus of Ferrara or as Petrus Bonus the Lombard (Petrus Bonus Lombardus). An Introduction to the Divine Art (Introductio in Divinam Chemicae Artem) is also attributed to him. In contrast to other alchemical texts of the same period, Petrus Bonus's alchemy describes an art that is in part natural and in part divine or supernatural.******

About ARTHUR EDWARD WAITE, the Translator and Preface Author:

******Arthur Edward Waite, b.1857 d.1942. Author, mystic, magician, alchemist, and occultist, Arthur Edward Waite is probably best remembered as the co-creator of the popular Rider-Waite TAROT card deck. He was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and was active in both Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry.

Waite joined the Runnymede Lodge of Freemasonry on September 19, 1901, becoming exalted to the degree of Holy Royal Arch on May 1, 1902. That same year he joined the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia. Joining the Masons and the Rosicrucians was a canny move, as many of his new fraternal brothers had been former critics of his books and positions, and despite the internal haggling and splinter groups within Golden Dawn, Waite assumed the mantle of Grand Master in 1903. Waite's first act as Grand Master was to change the group's name to the Order of the Independent and Rectified Rite.

Waite had been attracted to Theosophical philosophy early on but mistrusted the movement's founder, Madame Helena P. Blavatsky.

Waite is best remembered for the publication of the Rider-Waite deck of the Tarot. It was the first deck to have illustrations for all 78 cards, including the Minor Arcana and the Major Arcana, and for using the drawings to suggest the Divination meanings of the cards. Occultists embraced the deck when it appeared in 1910, and it remains a favorite Tarot deck today. Waite also popularized the 10 card Tarot divination spread entitled Celtic Cross.

Waite died on May 19, 1942. He is buried in the churchyard at Bishopsbourne, where his grave is covered in a tangled growth of the deadly nightshade plant.******

About LEONORA CARRINGTON and TAROT (from the Publisher):

******The British born artist Leonora Carrington is one of the more fascinating figures to emerge from the Surrealist movement. As both a writer and painter, she was championed early by André Breton and joined the exiled Surrealists in New York, before settling in Mexico in 1943. The magical themes of Carrington's otherworldly paintings are well known, but the recent discovery of a suite of tarot designs she created for the Major Arcana was a revelation for scholars and fans of Carrington alike. This tantalizing discovery, made by the curator Tere Arcq and scholar Susan Aberth, has placed greater emphasis upon the role of the tarot in Carrington's creative life and has led to fresh research in this area.

MAJOR ARCANA is executed on thick board, brightly colored and squarish in format, shining with gold and silver leaf. Carrington draws inspiration from the Tarot of Marseille and the popular Waite-Smith deck, bringing to both her own approach and style, creating a series of iconic images.

The Tarot of Leonora Carrington is the first book dedicated to this important aspect of the artist's work. It includes a full-size facsimile of her newly discovered Major Arcana; an introduction from her son, Gabriel Weisz Carrington; and a richly illustrated essay from Tere Arcq and Susan Aberth that offers new insights, exploring the significance of tarot imagery within Carrington's wider work, her many inspirations and mysterious occult sources.******
