Vellum covers, 6.5x8.5 inches (16.5x22 cm). Pagination: [16] 343 pages. Text in French.

ILLUSTRATED with a title page vignette, 2 folding engraved plates, 20 full-page engravings in text, a few other small engravings, 6 engraved tables in text, woodcut diagrams, and quite intricate engraved head-pieces, tail-pieces and initial letters.

Previously owned by a Fitz-Patrick who was apparently a Lord, Earl, or Baron of Upper Ossory. His bookplate is on the inside front cover, loosely mounted with a One Penny King George V Postage Revenue stamp. I do not know which FitzPatrick this is, but you can find the long genealogy of the Lords and Earls of Fitzpatrick on the Internet.

Condition: The vellum covers have yellowed and are splitting a bit at the spine folds, the rear cover has spotting, water damage and wrinkling; still these full vellum covers are solid and attractive in a Harry Potter Hogwarts Library way. Internally, the front inner hinge has split but is holding on by several cords, the pages have toned with age but are fully and easily legible, the blank front free endpaper has worming, some small paper repairs, and is coming loose from the binding, the title page and the next few pages have a bit of worming, the title page is trimmed for 3/4 inch at the top (perhaps to remove a previous owner's name) and an old water stain, there is some waterstaining / shorelining to the upper gutter area of some of the pages, the latter pages (especially 325-340 and the endpapers) have water staining / shorelining to their upper area (about 1/3 of the page), the rear blank endpaper has some paper repairs and a few lines written in Latin; otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clear, clean, and fully legible. A presentable copy that is complete including all plates and illustrations. I would consider this over 350 year old book to certainly be in GOOD condition for its age.

Occult truth straight from the 17th century to you.

Of such sermons one feels that all that the preacher knows of Theology he knows from hearsay. He has been carefully trained in the views of some particular school...And men who know life, and that it is ever new, new in its interests, its outlook, its lessons, get wearied; and either endure it for the sake of propriety, or stay away from the Church altogether...Sermons should touch life, and human interests, and the human heart, at every point. It should include both theory and practice...To learn life, read...Ruskin, Walt Whitman, Goethe, Carlyle...read such Mystics as Jacob Boehme, St. John of the Cross..."

About the author REVEREND GEORGE WILLIAM ALLEN (from various Internet sites):

******Reverend George William Allen was an important figure in the esoteric religious and cultural movements that swept North America and Europe at the turn of the twentieth century. He had significant influence over the movements that determined the cultural and religious avant garde of the Western world from 1880 to 1914, including mystical theosophy. Allen's dream theory, contemporary to Freud's, emphasized the notion that ordinary reality was a false state and that the waking up process was linked to mystical connections and thus the one sure way to self knowledge. Allen's influence lasted well into the twentieth century, even affecting poets such as Yeats and Pound. There has recently been renewed interest in G.W. Allen. A biography on Allen was published in 2019 written by the noted philosophy professor Jeffrey Lavoie titled: George William Allen and Christian Socialism.******

About the previous owner: GEORGE W. SOUTHWICK (from the Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center website):

******George W. Southwick, b.1918 d.2006, was a well known figure in Pentecostal churches in Southern California. He held ordination in four different bodies: International Church of the Foursquare Gospel; Assemblies of God; Whosoever Will; and Apostolic Holiness. He was a Bible teacher and noted collector of theological books and periodicals. Southwick developed a significant collection consisting of 4,000 books, as well as numerous periodicals, tracts, pamphlets, photographs, and other archival materials, much of it quite rare. After his death...his collection was donated to the Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center "FPHC". Southwick held to Oneness, Anglo-Israel, Calvinist, and Latter Rain beliefs, and much of his collection represented those minor traditions within Pentecostalism. This important collection includes many publications that are not otherwise accessible to researchers.******

A complete copy of this SCARCE 1904 work on the Freemason and Occultist, Cagliostro, by the noted historian Henri d'Almeras.

    About CAGLIOSTRO (from Wikipedia):

******Count Alessandro di Cagliostro, b.1743 d.1795, was the alias of the occultist Giuseppe Balsamo (Joseph Balsamo).

Cagliostro was an Italian adventurer and self-styled magician. He became a glamorous figure associated with the royal courts of Europe where he pursued various occult arts, including psychic healing, alchemy and scrying. His reputation lingered for many decades after his death, but continued to deteriorate, as he came to be regarded as a charlatan and impostor, this view fortified by the savage attack of Thomas Carlyle in 1833, who pronounced him the Quack of Quacks. W.R.H. Trowbridge in his Cagliostro: the Splendour and Misery of a Master of Magic (1910), attempted a rehabilitation.

Portuguese author Camilo Castelo Branco credits to Balsamo the creation of the Egyptian Rite of the Freemasons and intensive work in the diffusion of Freemasonry, by opening lodges all over Europe and by introducing the acceptance of women into the community. Occult historian Lewis Spence comments in his entry on Cagliostro that the swindler put his finagled wealth to good use by starting and funding a chain of maternity hospitals and orphanages around the continent. Occultist Aleister Crowley believed Cagliostro was one of his previous incarnations.******

    About PETRUS BONUS (from Wikipedia):

******Petrus Bonus was a late medieval alchemist. He is best known for his Precious Pearl (Latin: Margarita Preciosa) or Precious New Pearl (Margarita Preciosa Novella), an influential alchemical text composed sometime between 1330 and 1339. He was said to have been a physician at Ferrara in Italy, causing him to sometimes be known as Petrus Bonus of Ferrara or as Petrus Bonus the Lombard (Petrus Bonus Lombardus). An Introduction to the Divine Art (Introductio in Divinam Chemicae Artem) is also attributed to him. In contrast to other alchemical texts of the same period, Petrus Bonus's alchemy describes an art that is in part natural and in part divine or supernatural.******

About ARTHUR EDWARD WAITE, the Translator and Preface Author:

******Arthur Edward Waite, b.1857 d.1942. Author, mystic, magician, alchemist, and occultist, Arthur Edward Waite is probably best remembered as the co-creator of the popular Rider-Waite TAROT card deck. He was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and was active in both Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry.

Waite joined the Runnymede Lodge of Freemasonry on September 19, 1901, becoming exalted to the degree of Holy Royal Arch on May 1, 1902. That same year he joined the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia. Joining the Masons and the Rosicrucians was a canny move, as many of his new fraternal brothers had been former critics of his books and positions, and despite the internal haggling and splinter groups within Golden Dawn, Waite assumed the mantle of Grand Master in 1903. Waite's first act as Grand Master was to change the group's name to the Order of the Independent and Rectified Rite.

Waite had been attracted to Theosophical philosophy early on but mistrusted the movement's founder, Madame Helena P. Blavatsky.

Waite is best remembered for the publication of the Rider-Waite deck of the Tarot. It was the first deck to have illustrations for all 78 cards, including the Minor Arcana and the Major Arcana, and for using the drawings to suggest the Divination meanings of the cards. Occultists embraced the deck when it appeared in 1910, and it remains a favorite Tarot deck today. Waite also popularized the 10 card Tarot divination spread entitled Celtic Cross.

Waite died on May 19, 1942. He is buried in the churchyard at Bishopsbourne, where his grave is covered in a tangled growth of the deadly nightshade plant.******

    From the Publisher:

******The 7th of September 2009 was the 400th anniversary of the death of Judah Loew ben Bezalel, known both as the Maharal and Rabbi Loew. This exquisite book was published by the Jewish Museum in Prague and the Academia Publishing House for a prestigious exhibition of the same name at Prague Castle. It features a substantial selection of the exhibited items from the museum's collections and from numerous other Czech and foreign cultural institutions. However, it is more than a mere catalogue for the exhibition, as it PROVIDES INSIGHTS into the AUTHENTIC LEGACY of the MAHARAL, WHICH FOR THE MOST PART HAS UNTIL NOW REMAINED CONCEALED.

About Judah Loew ben Bezalel (from Wikipedia):

******Judah Loew ben Bezalel, born ca.1512-1526 d.1609, also called Rabbi Loew (aka Löw, Loewe, Löwe or Levai), widely known to scholars of Judaism as the Maharal of Prague or simply The Maharal, was an important Talmudic scholar, Jewish mystic, and philosopher who, for most of his life, served as the leading rabbi in the cities of Mikulov in Moravia and Prague in Bohemia.

Within the world of Torah and Talmudic scholarship, Loew is known for his works on Jewish philosophy and Jewish mysticism and his work Gur Aryeh al HaTorah, a supercommentary on Rashi's Torah commentary. He is also the subject of a 19th century legend that he created the Golem of Prague, an animate being fashioned from clay.

Maharal's numerous philosophical works have become cornerstones of Jewish thought. His writings tried to make the ideas of the Kabbalah (which he held to be the most deeply true of all the Torah) understandable to the average educated reader, by presenting them in a rigorously philosophical form, couched in terms accessible to the public. He felt that only the greatest of Torah scholars are able to perceive the full intent of the Kabbalistic works in their complex entirety, but much could be comprehended by the general reader if presented in a rational and philosophic form. His main kabbalistic influences appear to have been the Zohar, Sefer Yetzirah, and traditions of the Chassidei Ashkenaz.

Miharal was in favor of scientific research, but believed the Talmudic, Midrashic, and Aggadic teachings refer to matters far beyond the sphere of natural science.

The Maharal is the subject of the legend about the creation of a golem, a creature made out of clay to defend the Jews of the Prague Ghetto from antisemitic attacks. He is said to have used mystical powers based on esoteric knowledge of how God created Adam.

Rabbi Loew is buried at the Old Jewish Cemetery, Prague in Josefov, where his grave and tombstone can still be visited.******

    About JOSEPH CAMPBELL (from Wikipedia):

******Joseph John Campbell, b.1904 d.1987, was an American professor of literature at Sarah Lawrence College who worked in comparative mythology and comparative religion. His work covers many aspects of the human experience. Campbell's best known work is his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), in which he discusses his theory of the journey of the archetypal hero shared by world mythologies, termed the monomyth.

Campbell's theories on mythology and occult have been applied by a wide variety of modern writers and artists. His philosophy has been summarized by his own often repeated phrase: "Follow your bliss." George Lucas credited Campbell's work as influencing his Star Wars saga.

Campbell's concept of monomyth (one myth) sees all mythic narratives as variations of a single great story. The theory is based on the observation that a common pattern exists beneath the narrative elements of most great myths, regardless of their origin or time of creation. Campbell believed in the psychic unity of mankind and made use of the concept to express the idea that the whole of the human race can be seen as engaged in the effort of making the world "transparent to transcendence". He believed that underneath the world of phenomena lies an eternal source of things that existed before and beyond words, which is constantly pouring its energies into this world of time, suffering, and ultimately death.******

******RICHARD ROBERTS is an authority on Tarot, Alchemy and Divination. He has written a number of books, including: "The Original Tarot and You", "A Seth Reader", "Dance Unto Death", "Wind and the Wizard", etc.******

Barbara, to whom the book is warmly inscribed, remains a mystery to be uncovered.

About LEONORA CARRINGTON and TAROT (from the Publisher):

******The British born artist Leonora Carrington is one of the more fascinating figures to emerge from the Surrealist movement. As both a writer and painter, she was championed early by André Breton and joined the exiled Surrealists in New York, before settling in Mexico in 1943. The magical themes of Carrington's otherworldly paintings are well known, but the recent discovery of a suite of tarot designs she created for the Major Arcana was a revelation for scholars and fans of Carrington alike. This tantalizing discovery, made by the curator Tere Arcq and scholar Susan Aberth, has placed greater emphasis upon the role of the tarot in Carrington's creative life and has led to fresh research in this area.

MAJOR ARCANA is executed on thick board, brightly colored and squarish in format, shining with gold and silver leaf. Carrington draws inspiration from the Tarot of Marseille and the popular Waite-Smith deck, bringing to both her own approach and style, creating a series of iconic images.

The Tarot of Leonora Carrington is the first book dedicated to this important aspect of the artist's work. It includes a full-size facsimile of her newly discovered Major Arcana; an introduction from her son, Gabriel Weisz Carrington; and a richly illustrated essay from Tere Arcq and Susan Aberth that offers new insights, exploring the significance of tarot imagery within Carrington's wider work, her many inspirations and mysterious occult sources.******
