    (1) ASPECTS OF SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION: And Other Essays in the Philosophy of Science, by Carl G. Hempel. SIGNED & INSCRIBED by HEMPEL. Published by The Free Press, New York, 1965. First edition, with the 1965 date on the copyright page with no indication of additional printings. Hardcover book, burgundy cloth covered boards, silver printing on the spine, top page edges stained black, 6x9.5 inches, 505 pages. GOOD condition, the covers have a bit of wear to the spine ends and corner tips, the page edges (page edges of the closed book) have some light stains and soiling, internally there are some relevant margin notes in pencil here and there, otherwise the book is tight, bright, clean and clear. The SIGNATURE and INSCRIPTION are on the title page. The inscription reads; "To John Asherhurst / with best wishes and thanks for his help in proofreading! / Carl G. Hempel / 10-16-65". The hardcover first edition of this book is scarce (the later 1970 paperback is rather common). The first edition is almost impossible to find signed and inscribed.

    (2) SCIENCE AND SUBJECTIVITY, by ISRAEL SCHEFFLER, Professor of Philosophy, Harvard University. This is CARL G. HEMPEL'S COPY which he SIGNED and DATED on the first blank page: "C. G. Hempel / 10-3-67". There are also some relevant notes on the first page, possibly in Hempel's hand. Published by the Bobbs Merrill Company, 1967. First Printing, so stated on the copyright page. Softcovers, 5.5x8 inches, 132 pages. GOOD condition, some scraping and soiling to the covers, otherwise tight, bright, clean and clear.

    (3) DER TYPUSBEGRIFF IM LICHTE DER NEUEN LOGIK, von Carl G. Hempel und Paul Oppenheim. (THE CONCEPT of TYPOLOGY in LIGHT of the NEW LOGIC, by Carl G. Hempel and Paul Oppenheim.) Published by A.W. Suthoff's, Leiden, Netherlands, 1936. First edition. Paper wrappers, 6x9 inches, 130 pages. Text in German. GOOD MINUS condition, soiling to the covers, front spine fold is tender but holding, some margin marks and underlining here and there throughout, stamp of "University of Pennsylvania Libraries" (where Hempel was a Professor starting in 1977) at the bottom of a blank prelim page, the stamp has been lined out in black and there are no other ex-library marks in or on the book, otherwise a respectable, complete copy of this early book by Carl G. Hempel and Paul Oppenheim, with an ex-lib association to the University of Pittsburgh where Hempel was a Professor.

About CARL G. HEMPEL (from Wikipedia):

******Carl Gustav "Peter" Hempel, b.1905 d.1997, was a German writer, philosopher, logician, and epistemologist. He was a major figure in logical empiricism, a 20th century movement in the philosophy of science. He is especially well known for his articulation of the deductive-nomological model of scientific explanation, which was considered the standard model of scientific explanation during the 1950s and 1960s. He is also known for the Raven Paradox, aka "Hempel's Paradox".

After moving to Berlin, Hempel met Rudolf Carnap and became involved in the Berlin Circle of philosophers associated with the Vienna Circle.

In 1937 Hempel emigrated to the United States, where he accepted a position as Carnap's assistant at the University of Chicago. He later held positions at the City College of New York, Yale University, and Princeton University, where he taught alongside Thomas Kuhn and remained until made emeritus in 1973. In 1977 he became the University Professor of Philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1989 the Department of Philosophy at Princeton University renamed its Three Lecture Series the "Carl G. Hempel Lectures" in his honor. He was an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Philosophical Society for which he served as President.******

RARE 1726 FIRST EDITION and an IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY with the Signature of J. F. Classen. Books with the stamp and marks of the Classen library that was built after his death are not uncommon, but books with his actual signature are rarely seen.

About JOHAN FREDERIK CLASSEN (from Wikipedia):

******Johan Frederik Classen, frequently known simply as J. F. Classen, b.1725 d.1792, was a Danish-Norwegian industrialist, major general, landowner and founder of Det Classenske Fideicommis. He served as chancellery adviser to King Frederik V.

A patron of literature, Classen bought books at home and abroad until he had amassed a large library. In his will Classen left all his assets and possessions to a charitable foundation, Det Classenske Fideicommis. It was to be used "to educate good people...and to help to alleviate poverty and misery." The fund still has considerable assets.

The Classen Library (Danish: Det Classenske Bibliotek) in Amaliegade in Copenhagen was built at the time of Classen's death in 1792 to house his extensive library of some 20,000 volumes. It was a public library in Copenhagen, Denmark, the third largest library in the city, surpassed only by the Royal Danish Library and Copenhagen University Library. It existed until 1867 when it was merged with the Copenhagen University Library.****** (Read much more about J. F. Classen on his Wikipedia page.)

(Zygmunt A. Piotrowski, b.1904 d.1985, was a Polish born American psychologist who worked on the Rorschach test. He received the Bruno Klopfer Award in 1971 and the Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions from the American Psychological Association in 1980. Piotrowski developed a method of analysis for the Rorschach test he termed perceptanalysis, which emphasized perception of the images rather than secondary associations.)

GOOD condition, the pages are lightly age toned, the typescript is best read with a bright white sheet placed beneath the page being read else these thin sheets allow the type of the underpages to come through making legibility difficult. The hardcover binding shows some wear but is doing its job well.

Advanced Psychology at NYU in 1955. Have things changed? Let me consult my Rorschach cards...

From the Abstract (at the rear of the Thesis):

******The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect on personality of group influence. The following experiment was conducted: Thirty subjects received three Rorschach tests. The first was intended to provide an initial estimate of personality variables. The second, a two member group test, required subjects to compare impressions to the blots, ostensibly in order to establish as group responses those percepts they could agree on. The third was again an individual test. By comparing the first and third Rorschachs it became possible to determine how the group experience modified the Rorschach variables. By evaluating the personality referents of these variables, inferences were drawn concerning the personality modification. Subjects obviously did not themselves change; only their Rorschachs did. Unknown to each subject, his partner in the group test was the examiner's confederate and "saw" only responses he had been instructed to see...******

Each article is written in the language that the author chose, often in Latin, but also in Italian, French, English, etc. Published by Directio et Administratio Antonianum, ROMA (ROME, ITALY), 1926-1996. SEVENTY-ONE VOLUMES (Volumes 1-71). 6.5x9.5 inches (17x24 cm). Pages numbered by volume (i.e. numbered consecutively when there are several parts to a single volume). Approximately 400-600 pages per volume, less to earlier volumes, more to later volumes. Volumes 1-51 are bound in HARDCOVERS, with the complete annual issues bound within. Some of the original wrappers / paper covers are bound in, most are not, otherwise every annual volume is complete. Most of the hardcover volumes have black leather covered spines and corners with matching black pebbled cloth, 4 raised spine bands, and gilt spine titles; some of the hardcover volumes have cloth covered spines and marbled paper covered boards. Volumes 52-71 are in wrappers, most published in three parts per Volume. The previous owner has put thin plastic bands around the three issues of each of the softcover annual volumes, presumably to keep them safe and in proper order while stored, perhaps deep in a Vatican vault. Though single volumes (or one part of a three part annual volume) can sometimes be found for sale, this UNBROKEN SET OF 71 VOLUMES has become almost impossible to find. While most volumes do not show any previous ownership names, some show a variety of previous owners, including Adolf Ledwolorz O.F.M., b. 1892 d. 1973, a Polish Franciscan Catholic Scholar, author of a few works on the history of Franciscans and on Polish Catholics; Franziskaner Konvent in Hannover (a Franciscan Monastery in Hannover, Germany), and others. Accordingly, there are some ink stamps and handwritten names, mainly to the prelim pages, of the volumes that show a previous owner. Nothing major. Apparently this complete set had a varied provenance. GOOD CONDITION: Various degrees of rubbing and scrapes to the covers, mostly minor but some more significant including fraying at the spine ends; internally, there is light toning to the pages, some signs of handling, some creases and wear here and there, overall still tight, bright, clean and clear. There are no marks or marginalia that I can find, except the previous owner's stamps and written names as noted above, however there are MANY volumes and MANY pages that I have not closely examined and there well could be some notes, underlining, annotations, etc. that I did not come across in volumes I did not examine (e.g. I did not cut open the straps that hold the softcover volumes together) or missed in my examination. A solid, very presentable, complete set of 71 Volumes with All Parts. Would look great on and off the shelf. No good Catholic library should be without it, God knows. Will be shipped in FIVE or more HEAVY BOXES. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This 71 Volume Set will be extremely expensive to ship internationally and will require massive additional shipping charges. SCARCE 1740 BOOK by SCALIGER with Two Interesting BOOKPLATES. About JOSEPH JUSTUS SCALIGER (excerpted from Wikipedia): ******Joseph Justus Scaliger, b. 1540 d. 1609, was a French religious leader and scholar, known for expanding the notion of classical history from Greek and ancient Roman history to include Persian, Babylonian, Jewish and ancient Egyptian history. He spent the last sixteen years of his life in the Netherlands. During the first seven years of his residence at Leiden his reputation was at its highest point. His literary judgement was unquestioned. From his throne at Leiden he ruled the learned world; a word from him could make or mar a rising reputation. At the same time, Scaliger had made numerous enemies. He hated ignorance, but he hated still more half-learning, and most of all dishonesty in argument or in quotation. He had no toleration for the disingenuous argument and the misstatements of facts of those who wrote to support a theory or to defend an unsound cause. His pungent sarcasm soon reached the ears of the persons who were its object, and his pen was not less bitter than his tongue. He was conscious of his power, and not always sufficiently cautious or sufficiently gentle in its exercise. He made many enemies. The results of his method of historical criticism threatened the Catholic controversialists and the authenticity of many of the documents on which they relied. The Jesuits, who aspired to be the source of all scholarship and criticism, saw the writings and authority of Scaliger as a formidable barrier to their claims. Scaliger was known to be an irreconcilable Protestant and as long as his intellectual supremacy was unquestioned, the Protestants had the advantage in learning and scholarship. His enemies therefore aimed to attack him as a man and to destroy his reputation. This was no easy task, for his moral character was high. Nonetheless, in 1607 the Jesuits successfully attacked Scaliger by publishing a 400 page tome that purportedly exposed 500 lies in Scaliger's works. This was said to have broken Scaliger's spirit, and two years later he died.******

His handwritten note is on a 5x5 inch piece of paper. The note reads: "I very much hope that / what I have written has been of / some use to you. / I send you my very genuine sympathy. / Yours sincerely, / Arnold Toynbee".

The note is undated, but the book it is in is dated 1957, so possibly circa 1957. The writing on the note begins at the very top of the piece of paper, indicating that the note may have been the last part of a longer letter with only this last part clipped and kept by the previous owner, I have no way of knowing for certain. The note is laid in the following book: CHRISTIANITY AMONG THE RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD, by ARNOLD TOYNBEE. Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, 1957. First Edition, First Printing, with the first printing code A9-57[H] on the copyright page and the letter A printed below the text on the rear dustjacket flap. Hardcover Book in Dustjacket, top page edges stained blue, 5.5x8 inches, 116 pages. VERY GOOD book, slight slant to the spine, a bit of shelf wear to the spine ends and corner tips, overall just lightly used and still tight, bright, clean and unmarked; in a GOOD dustjacket that has scraping to its folds, creasing and some chipping to its edges, spine ends and corner tips, and some rubbing, but is still bright and doing its job well. The dustjacket retains its $2.75 printed price at the top of the front flap. The handwriting and signature of Arnold Toynbee are bright and clear. The paper his message is written on has a couple folds.

The photographs are 8x10 glossy b&w prints. They are original prints from the Jack London Estate, but may be prints of a photo of a photo, or prints from old negatives. Though I am not certain what generation the photographs are, they clearly are early, certainly pre 1942 which was when the film The Adventures of Martin Eden was released. These photographs were obviously taken during Jack London's short life (b 1876 d. 1916) with the originals becoming part of Jack London's Estate upon his death in 1916. The photographs are in Good condition with some light creases and bends from handling and use. About MARTIN EDEN the novel, and THE ADVENTURES OF MARTIN EDEN the film: ******Originally published in 1909, Jack London's novel MARTIN EDEN tells the story of a self-taught member of the Proletariat struggling to become a writer. The novel provided the basis for the 1942 movie THE ADVENTURES OF MARTIN EDEN starring Glenn Ford and Claire Trevor and distributed by Columbia Pictures.******

The eight sermons are paginated individually, with the exceptions of numbers 4 & 5 and 7 & 8 that are paginated consecutively. PAGINATION: [2] (title page for this eight sermon book, blank verso), [4] (title page to first sermon, blank verso, author's dedication), 24 (first sermon); 30 (second sermon); [2] (ad and blank verso) 31 (third sermon), [1 ad]; 68 (fourth and fifth sermons); 36 (sixth sermon); 64 pages (seventh and eighth sermons). A great copy for a fine rebinding, being a complete copy with both first title pages, and text that is bright and clear throughout. A Scarce First Edition of this Important Work. You can read about the BOYLE LECTURES on Wikipedia, and elsewhere online.
