Archive of RADICAL FINNISH SOCIALIST FEDERATION of FITCHBURG, MASS. 1914-1922

    Includes:

80+ MANUSCRIPT PAGES (and two typed pages) describing STRIKES, CALLS TO ACTION, RED FLAG MARCHES, LABOR PROTESTS, POLICE BRUTALITY, etc. + 4 pages with over 60 SIGNATURES of FINNISH SOCIALIST FEDERATION MEMBERS including OSKARI TOKOI (see his Wikipedia page), and an interesting page from 1933 indicating this written archive may have come from a "time-capsule".

The 80+ manuscript pages (and 2 typed pages) are an important "I was there" look at many of the strikes, rallies, marches, speeches, battles with police, etc, that took place during the Finnish Socialist Federation's most radical era 1914-1922. The 80+ manuscript pages (and 2 typed pages) are an important "I was there" look at many of the strikes, rallies, marches, speeches, battles with police, etc, that took place during the Finnish Socialist Federation's most radical era 1914-1922. The authors of these written "reports" are unstated. Many seem to be in the same hand. They are written in English.

The 60 signatures are on 4 pages with a "RAIVAAJA PUBLISHING COMPANY / FITCHBURG, MASS" letterhead, undated but likely c.1930. ("Raivaaja was a Finnish-language newspaper published from 1905 to 2009 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, by Raivaaja Publishing Company. For the first three decades of its existence the publication was closely associated with the Socialist Party of America." - Wikipedia)

Did these handwritten reports come from a Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Finnish Labor Society time capsule??? Maybe. There is a typed page, in Finnish, on "Finnish Labor Society SAIMA" letterhead dated 1933 that precedes the rest of the pages in the binder, which states (translated by Google):

******"That part of the Finnish people, who in the storms of time moved to this city of Fitchburg, during the last decades, would like to preserve for posterity some incidents from their phase-rich journey. As can be seen from the contents of the box, they were Finnish migrants, mostly young men and women who hoped that on this continent they would be able to partake of the warmer sunshine of a happy day than in the country of their birth. However, hard work was a condition of livelihood here as well, and that is why many of them became attached to the labor movement, whose struggles are described in detail in the various reports herein.

The box will be buried in the ground on Thursday evening, May 11, 1933, in a place known as Saima Park. Naturally no one knows when it will be found, but it is supposed to remain in the ground for several generations and after emerging will be solid material from the past for researchers of the Labor cause. In Fitchburg, Massachusetts, May 11, 1933. / Lauri Moilanen / Saima scribe of the Finnish Workers' Association."******

Each of the manuscript pages, the signature pages, and the "time capsule" page, are in plastic sleeves and collected in a three ring binder.

Condition: The signature pages and the "time capsule" page all have rust stains at the top, likely from metal clips or pins. The manuscript pages are all in remarkably good condition, bright, clean and clear. Like they've been archivally stored in a time capsule or something!

About the FINNISH SOCIALIST FEDERATION (from the University of Minnesota Libraries website:

******"The Saima Workers' Society of Fitchburg, Mass. was founded in 1894 as a Finnish workers' organization. In 1905, it joined the Socialist Party, thus making it the oldest Finnish Socialist chapter in the United States. In 1906, it joined the Finnish Socialist Federation, and by 1924-1925 was the largest such chapter in the country, with over five hundred members.*****

About the S.S. KAISERIN AUGUSTE VICTORIA (from Wikipedia):

******Augusta Victoria, later Auguste Victoria, placed in service in 1889 and named for Empress Augusta Victoria, wife of German Emperor Wilhelm II, was the name ship of the Augusta Victoria series and the first of a new generation of luxury Hamburg America Line ocean liners. She was the first liner built in continental Europe with twin propellers and when first placed in service, the fastest liner in the Atlantic trade.

She was the first luxury liner at Hamburg America, introducing the concept of the "floating hotel"; she had "a rococo stair hall, illuminated by a milky way of pear-shaped prisms and naked light bulbs clutched by gilded cherubs, a reception court choked by palm trees and a dark and gothic smoking room." She was immediately successful.

In 1897, the ship underwent a comprehensive rebuilding at Harland & Wolff in Belfast arriving in the graving dock 19 December 1896. She was lengthened by 61 ft (18.6 m), her tonnage increased, and her speed increased by half a knot, and the middle of her three masts was removed. Her name was also changed to Auguste Victoria to correct an original inaccuracy; the Empress spelt her name with an e.******

The pioneering photographers were William Oscar Amsden (1862-1942) and Hobart Clark of Seattle. These photographs are of historical importance for a number of reasons: the Mount Baker Series were the first photographs taken at the top of the summit; The Mount Rainier Series was crucial in marshaling support for establishing Mount Rainier as a National Park (this expedition included Fay Fuller who was the first woman to summit Mount Rainier); the Cascade Mining Series depict one of the oldest mining districts in Northern Washington, discovered by the Rouse brothers who made the first major discovery of ores on the edge of Doubtful Lake.

Photograph Album. Oblong, textured brown cloth covered boards, 12.75" x 10", lace bound, embossed gilt printing on the cover, 26 board leaves, the photographs range from 9" x 7" to 9.75" x 7.5", mounted on 11.5" x 9.75 cream board, 25 of the photographs are mounted on one leaf, one is mounted on a verso. Captions at the bottom in the negative. GOOD CONDITION: wear/staining to the covers, spine covering tearing at the margins but still holding, gilt remains bright, internally, waviness, light shorelining and light foxing to the boards. The photographs are mostly clean, clear and legible, some toning, fading, a few small stains/abrasions. Scarce.

MOUNT RAINIER SERIES: Photographs documenting the glaciers, summit, and natural scenery of the 1890 Mt. Rainier summit bound expedition led by Reverend Ernest C. Smith. The party included Fay Fuller, Leonard Longmire, William O. Amsden, and Robert R. Parrish. Fay Fuller was the first woman to ascend Mount Rainier. Amsden had a heavy 8x10 camera. Shortly after the climb Amsden produced his series of Mount Rainier photographs. Expedition leader Smith wrote of the series "Amsden's photographs have a historic interest. Without them there would have been no illustrated lecture in Washington at the crucial time for the proposed park."

this underscores how the Mount Rainier National Park idea was rooted in the physical and aesthetic experience of climbing the mountain. The arguments that were marshaled in support of Mount Rainier National Park during the 1890s helped shape the national park idea at a crucial time.

CASCADE MINING DISTRICT SERIES: Photographs document the mines, miners, and natural scenery of the mining district. The Cascade Mining District is one of the oldest mining districts in northern Western Washington, dating its formal organization to September, 1889. Prospectors George Rouse and John Rouse, traveling from the west over Cascade Pass made the first major discovery when they located ores on the edge of Doubtful Lake.

MOUNT BAKER SERIES: Photographs document the ascent of Mt. Baker led by Valentine V. Lowe in June-July 1891. Photos include: men with alpenstocks amongst trees; men waving flag and hats on summit. The expedition party included photographer William O. Amsden, Henry Lowe, Ed. Whitstruck, Percival J. Parris, G. W. Smith, Tom Scatbo, and photographer Hobert Clark. These photographs are the first ever made with a camera on the top of Mt. Baker.

Ex-lib aside the book is in GOOD condition, gently used, still complete, tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid, nice copy.

DEACCESSION / PROVENANCE NOTE: There is a stamp at the bottom of the library bookplate that reads: "PSR / Released 2013". It is interesting to note that in the year 2000 the Pacific School of Religion founded an institute devoted exclusively to the study of Pacific Asian religion (the PANA Institute). The university acquired a number of important and scarce books for the institute. However, PANA was placed on indefinite hiatus (i.e. shut down) in 2009 due to budgetary concerns, and many of its rare books were deaccessioned.

WorldCat identifies only 3 copies, including the ones at Yale and Oberlin.
