1871-1895 FIFTEEN OBSTETRIC and GYNECOLOGY MEDICAL PAMPHLETS Bound Together in Hardcovers, by Dr. Vulliet, Maternity Surgeon, Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Paris

FIFTEEN MOSTLY OBSTETRIC and GYNECOLOGY PAMPHLETS dated 1871-1895, by Dr. F. VULLIET (Professor of Medicine University of Geneva, Maternity Surgeon, Member of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Paris). The 15 pamphlets are gathered and bound in one book, a sammelband.

The person who gathered the pamphlets and created this sammelband typed a two page Index which is pasted onto two blank front endpapers. The medical pamphlets are complete, with both their front and rear covers. All are professionally bound in hardcovers, 3/4 leather with five raised spine bands, gilt titling on the spine, and marbled endpapers. The book measures 6x9 inches. The pamphlets have various paginations and various publishers; they are bound-in chronologically with dates from 1871 to 1895. The TEXT of the pamphlets and the typed index are in FRENCH, except for two which are in German.

VERY GOOD condition, the covers have some light wear to their corner tips and spine ends but are solid and attractive; the bound in pamphlets are all very nice, age toning to some of the pages, overall tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid, very nice book and bound-in group of medical pamphlets.

Hardcovers, brown cloth covered boards, blind embossed "Colby & Rich" publisher's logo on the front and rear covers, gilt titling on the spine (including "Colby & Rich / Boston" at the bottom of the spine), 5x7.5 inches, 322 pages plus two pages of publisher's ads at the rear.

GOOD condition: The book has been professionally conserved, making the covers and binding nice and solid; the covers have some scrapes and rubs and the spine gilt is somewhat faded. Internally, the thin yellow endpapers show some creasing and a bit of edgewear, there is a slight crease to the upper corner of the pages, the front blank endpapers and the frontispiece are foxed, otherwise all the pages are tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A solid, presentable copy, one of the nicer copies I have seen.

Though "William White and Company" is stated as the publisher on the title page, copyright page, and on the ads at the rear: the covers show "Colby & Rich" on the covers and spine. Here's what happened... Luther Colby was one of the founders of William White and Company. When William White died (or left, it appears uncertain which) in mid 1873, Luther Colby formed a partnership with Isaac B. Rich to take over the stock and operations of William White and Company. The first edition of this book was published in early 1873 before William White (died?), and was bound with "William White and Company" covers. After Colby & Rich took over White's stock and operations they published a second edition, also in 1873, with Colby & Rich covers but using the same first edition sheets, therefore leaving William White and Company as the stated publisher on the text pages.

A WELSH book comprised of articles and literary pieces from Volume VI of the Welsh Women's Periodical Y FRYTHONES: AT WASANAETH MERCHED A GWRAGEDD CYMRU. The periodical was edited by CRANOGWEN, the pseudonym of Sarah Jane Rees.

This is apparently VOLUME VI (CYF. VI). One volume only. Perhaps a bound collection was published at the end of every year of the publication, I do not know. TEXT in WELSH.

Hardcovers, leather covered spine and corners with pebbled cloth covered boards, 5.5x7.5 inches, 384 pages. Illustrated with drawings and engraved title letters.

Y FRYTHONES was a monthly Welsh language periodical for women, with many of the articles and literary pieces contributed by women of Wales. The contents were both religious, literary, and general in nature. There were articles on religion, raising children, the family, and caring for the home, as well as poetry, music, games and biographies of prominent women. All was in Welsh. The periodical was edited by the teacher, poet, and unconventional woman, Sarah Jane Rees (Cranogwen, 1839-1916). The periodical was founded in 1874 and ended publication in 1891. It was created by Sarah Jane Rees to continue the work of the Welsh women's periodical Y GYMRAES which was published for only two years, 1850 and 1851. Y GYMRAES was created in response to a government report on education in Wales which had strongly criticized the lax morals of Welsh women. Both Y GYMRAES and then Y FRYTHONES set out to promote higher intellectual and moral standards for women in Wales. The Welsh language poet Elen Egryn contributed an introduction in verse to the first issue of Y GYMRAES in which she called for women to rise "above shame and hateful mockery" (goruwch gwarth a dirmyg cas).

Previously owned by KATIE HUMPHREYS, with her bookplate on the front free endpaper, and by ROBERT OWEN, with his small ink stamped name on the front free endpaper and title page. At the bottom of the front pastedown is a small label of A. BROMLEY / Printer, Lithographer, Bookbinder, &c / High Street / BANGOR (WALES). It appears to me likely that KATIE HUMPHREYS and ROBERT OWEN were both from Bangor Wales, as both names show up prominently there.

GOOD CONDITION: the leather spine covering is scraped and rubbed, and the leather corners are rubbed at their edges; the pebbled cloth covered boards have a few smudges; otherwise the covers remain solid and are doing their job well; internally there is a bit of foxing and some creases here and there, else the pages are tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid, nice copy.

About CRAGOGWEN, pseudonym of SARAH JANE REES (from Wikipedia):

******Sarah Jane Rees / Cranogwen,, b.1839 d.1916, was a Welsh poet, editor, teacher, and proto-suffragette. She had two long lesbian relationships.

She attended school in both Cardigan and New Quay, and for a time studied at a navigation school in London, where she gained her master's certificate. In 1859 Sarah Jane set up her own navigation school in her home village of Llangrannog.

In addition to teaching navigation and other subjects, Rees became editor of the Welsh language women's periodical Y Frythones (1878 to 1889), a platform for Welsh bluestockings and proto-suffragettes.

Rees had two significant same-sex relationships, previously described as a romantic friendship. Her first was with Fanny Rees, a milliner's daughter from Troedyraur, near LLangrannog. Fanny contracted tuberculosis and returned to Wales around 1874 to die. She moved into Rees' home rather than that of her family, and died in her arms. She commemorated Fanny in one of her best-known poems, Fy Ffrynd. Her second relationship was with Jane Thomas, with whom she spent most of her life.******

HUNDREDS (550+) of HANDWRITTEN FORMULAS for CREATING PRODUCTS for TREATING WOMEN'S BEAUTY "DEFECTS" and for INCREASING A WOMAN'S BEAUTY. Handwritten by an unnamed Chemist or Pharmacist likely as a Book of Formulas Reference Guide.

Undated, however it is likely the formulas were written circa 1890. There are several note sheets "Hazard, Hazard & Co." letterheads laid-in at the front (Hazard, Hazard & Co. was active in the mid to late 1800s); the title page of the Burr's Medical Index in which the formulas are written is dated "Hartford, 1881"; the bookseller's label on the front pastedown states "Agent for The Henry Bill Publishing Company's Physicians' Account Books" - Henry Bill Publishing was founded in 1847 and dissolved in 1896.

The detailed formulas are handwritten in a BURR'S MEDICAL INDEX, published by the J. B. Burr Publishing Co., Hartford, Connecticut, 1881. Likely by a chemist or pharmacist who would prepare a cream, lotion, spray, etc., based on the detailed formulas in this book.

Hardcovers, leather spine and corners with green cloth covered boards, 8.5x11 inches, filled with approximately 400 pages, indexed with alphabetical tabs. There are approximately 575 formulas for preparing beautification remedies for women, handwritten on 122 of the pages and arranged alphabetically for easy access by the chemist / pharmacist. The rest of the pages are blank.

Laid-in here and there are various slips of paper with handwritten ingredients and a couple relevant newspaper articles ("WILL POWER GROWS HAIR"; "Removal of Tattoo Marks"). The slips of paper and news articles have browned the pages they were inserted between, but the handwritten text remains bright and clear.

Laid-in at the front are three note sheets with the letterhead "Hazard, Hazard & Co., New York". The note sheets have lists of items, perhaps lotions being prepared by Hazard, Hazard & Co.

The formulas are handwritten in ink and arranged alphabetically within the tabs: e.g. within the "A" tab on page "AM" is a long formula for creating "Amandine Skin Cosmetic to Whiten and Soften the Skin"; on page "AP" are formulas for "Aphrodisiac Pastiles"; within the "B" tab on pages "BA" are lots of formulas for various "Bath Aromatics"; on page "BR" are formulas for increasing or decreasing the size of breasts, and lots of formulas for bad breath; within the "C" tab on pages "CO" are various formulas for "Complexion"; within the "F" tab on pages "FA" are formulas for various Face Creams and Face Beautifiers, on page FE are formulas for "FEET OFFENSIVE" and "FETID FEET", on pages "FR" are many formulas dealing with Freckles; etc. etc.

Handwritten on the backside of the front free endpaper is what seems to be the ""Raison d'Etre" for the formulas in this book:

******To be beautiful is the unwritten law of woman.. it is womans right and privilege to do all in her power to add to the bounteous gifts with which nature has endowed her..."

GOOD CONDITION: The covers have wear, some water staining, and have been professionally rebacked with portions of the original spine covering laid on; internally nice, some pages with browning from laid-in relevant paper items, otherwise tight, bright, clean and clear.

A wonderful, c.1890 manuscript "Book of Formulas" aimed at women who, according to this book, need help to fix and beautify every single part of their body.

GOOD condition: The covers have been professionally restored, the boards have scrapes and rubs, the spine leather has numerous chips, overall these covers are now sturdy and attractive; internally, there a previous owner's signature at the top of the half-title page of each volume, otherwise the inner pages are very nice, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A solid, well-preserved set.

Two Large Format Sales Agent's Policy Kits / Books, with receipts for policies sold and with information for the agent regarding pricing and issuing policies. Hartford Fire Insurance, 1895 and 1896. The sales agent that owned these policy portfolios was a woman, Abby C. Sturgeon of Newman, Stanislaus County, California. Her territory, deduced from the bound in written policies, was apparently Stanislaus and Merced Counties, California, including Modesto and surrounding areas. The two portfolio type kits / books measure 12.5 x 18 inches. They open to show Hartford Company Rules for Agents pasted on the inside front and rear covers. Also bound inside the portfolios are the stubs for policies that have been issued and full policy issuing sheets. One of the portfolios has 12 stubs that are filled in with names and other relevant issuing information. This portfolio has no blank policy forms remaining to be used. The other portfolio has 5 stubs with filled in info and has 14 policy sheets that remain unused, unissued. The two portfolio policy books are only in FAIR condition, the covers are soiled, have stains and sunning, and are shaky; internally some of the items tipped onto the inside covers are creased and wrinkled. Nonetheless these vintage insurance items are original and all the printing and handwriting is clear and legible. Some interesting genealogy from 19th Century Stanislaus County and Merced County, California. Interesting also is that this 1895 insurance sales agent of farm policies was a woman. In the book Lady Bell instructs how to play the game of Conversation as a Chess Game. Like chess, the conversationalists play either Black or White, making "moves" meant to win the game of conversation at evening gatherings. In the book, women play White and men play Black.

From the book: "I have adopted the phraseology of a Handbook to Chess as being most suitable for my purpose. By Player is meant the interlocutor, and for further convenience I shall designate the male interlocutor as Black, and the female as White...these being the prevalent hues of male and female costume at evening gatherings, where conversation runs the highest..."

Hardcovers, paper covered boards titled in black on the front cover and spine, and with black lining on the front and rear boards, 6x8.5 inches, 63 pages.

FAIR condition, the covers are soiled, worn at the corner tips, edges and spine ends, and the spine bottom is lacking 1 inch of its paper covering, nonetheless the covers are original and still doing their job; internally, the front inner hinge is cracked but holding well, there is a presentation inscription on the front free endpaper: "L. F. S. / from D. A. / July 1900" (maybe significant, no idea), and there is the signature of

"Willard Pope" on the front pastedown, the pages have yellowed with age as normal, otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

LAID-IN is a HANDWRITTEN LETTER by Martha Young to her sister "Mrs. Alfred Muckle". It is written on 1 1/2 pages of a 4 page single fold sheet of paper. Much of the handwriting is indecipherable to me, but here is how it begins: "Dearest Fredie: / This may be a help to you. If Fettie comes through and I see her I will ask if she has the book of..." The letter is signed/initialed M.Y. and dated (?) 20, 1934. On the folded backside it is addressed to Mrs. Alfred Muckle / Courtesy of Agnes Tutwiler". (AGNES TUTWILER was a relative of Martha Young; FREDIE likely was Martha Young's nickname for her married sister.)

Hardcover Book, illustrated covers, 249 pages. ILLUSTRATED with a frontispiece photograph "Witch Menées Child" and 27 b&w drawings. Though the drawings and their captions are meant to illustrate the folktales and dialects of Southern Blacks (mostly former slaves), and were widely admired by writers of the day, many would be considered racist today.

FAIR condition. The covers are soiled with a scattering of scrapes, the rear cover has some water staining to its bottom edge, the spine is substantially scraped and rubbed; nonetheless the covers are still solid and doing their job. Internally, the front inner hinge is cracked but holding well, there is foxing primarily to the first and last few pages, light finger smudges here and there, and one page has a thumbprint size chip to its front margin (not affecting text) and another with a 2 inch closed tear, else the inner pages remain tight, clean, clear and unmarked. All 27 b&w plates are present, a few have a bit of foxing. The laid-in letter has folds, creases, smudging and some stains, but the text remains clear (though the handwriting is difficult).

GOOD Condition, the covers have some darkening to the spine and margins, the spine was professionally restored, overall the covers are solid, with bright gilt, and quite attractive. Internally, the front inner hinge has been professionally reinforced, the text pages are toned/browned as normal, there is foxing to the first and last few pages of the text, the first plate has some foxing at the top (a result of facing the foxed blank verso of the last page of text), otherwise the plates, which were printed on good quality paper, are bright, clean and clear. Overall a solid, complete, very presentable copy.

ALFREDO BRUNO was MARIA MONTESSORI'S lawyer and advisor during the years that PEDAGOGIA SCIENTIFICA first appeared and the "Montessori Method" was taking off internationally. As such he was greatly responsible for the early diffusion of Maria Montessori's work. As Montessori states in her inscription to Bruno she entrusted him with "the entirety of this work".

******From 1911 on, requests for translations came to Montessori from all over the world. The lawyer ALFREDO BRUNO handled all correspondence, and all issues related to finance - contracts, copyright, royalty payments, etc. In the collection held in the archives of the Association Montessori Internationale in Amsterdam, are collected the letters SENT TO HIM between 1912 and 1914 from every part of the globe. The documents show on the one hand the international interest in the Montessori experiment, on the other the criteria Bruno and Montessori used in deciding to whom to entrust her work.*****

Filled with remembrances, signatures, and drawings, by men and women in post WWI. Most of the remembrances are from 1919, with some later ones being from 1920-1926. Many are from women soldiers in the Q.M.A.A.C, and other British Women's army corps;; and many are from male soldiers in the R.A.S.C. and similar army corps. It was a time of love and death, love lost and love being sought. Many of the signatures come from Curragh (a notorious training camp in Ireland).

There are some lovely and sad drawings and texts, dealing with parting and death. Including a lovely poem by Emily Dickinson with an associated drawing. One "poem" by a woman soldier is very racially offensive, but is the only one that I found..

I'm not sure who this belonged to, possibly Maria Macaulay, but clearly a woman in the Q.M.A.A.C.

Leather covers, 6.5x7 inches (17x18 cm), 60 leaves all with writing and/or drawings, some on both sides of the leaf, some on one side only.

A look at post WWI, not from the perspective of battle weary men, but from that of an army woman who, from the tone of the comments in the autograph book, seemed to send soldiers off and bring them home with a friendly female touch.

This original, 1949, primary source, first edition, is scarce. (Beware the common computer generated editions, (e.g. Alpha Editions, Hutson Street Press, Palala Press), sometimes being mistakenly presented as 1949 printings.)

KRISTIN. Screenplay by ERNEST PASCAL. From the Novel KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER by SIGRID UNDSET. The screenplay is undated but perhaps circa 1960 (Ernest Pascal died in 1966). The novel Kristin Lavransdatter was first published in 1921 and has been in print ever since. This screenplay by Ernest Pascal was never produced. The only film of the novel that I am aware of is a 1995 Swedish Film directed by Liv Ullmann. That film, in Swedish, has no relation to this screenplay. Photocopied on plain white paper (photo offset copies were, and still are, common among production and working scripts; drafts could be quickly made and sent to the film's writers, producers, directors, etc.), 8.5x11 inches, 170 pages printed on one side only, pages are 3-hole punched and bound in heavy stock yellow paper covers with 2 brass brads. VERY GOOD condition, the covers have some light soiling and edgewear, otherwise the script is tight, bright, clean and unmarked. RARE and UNUSUAL screenplay by ERNEST PASCAL of KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER.

******Ann Lauterbach, b.1942, is an American professor and poet. Her most recent book of poetry is SPELL (Penguin Books, 2018). Her book OR TO BEGIN AGAIN (Penguin, 2009) was nominated for the National Book Award. She is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the New York State Foundation for the Arts, the Ingram Merrill Foundation, and in 1995, was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship (the Genius Award).

CHILDREN ON THEIR BIRTHDAYS. An UNPRODUCED SCREENPLAY Adapted for the Screen by DONNA KANTER and SUSAN BEST, from the Short Story by TRUMAN CAPOTE. This screenplay was DONNA KANTER'S 1983 DIRECTOR'S PROJECT while in the AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE (AFI) DIRECTING WORKSHOP FOR WOMEN. She was in the class of 1982-1984. The screenplay is a First Draft dated July 23, 1983. Photocopied on plain 8.5x11 inch paper, stapled at the upper corner, 34 pages plus a title page, printed on one side only. GOOD MINUS condition, the first and last pages have creases and soiling, there are numerous staple holes at the upper left corner (though only one staple currently holds the pages together), some pages are dog eared at their top or bottom corner, and their are general signs of handling and use; still a complete copy of an interesting screenplay resulting from the AFI's attempts to get more women into film directing. Though this early, student screenplay was never filmed, its creation at the AFI Directing Workshop for Women certainly had an impact on Donna Kanter. She later established a successful Television and Film Production Company, The Donna Kanter Company. WOMAN'S CONVENTION AUXILIARY NATIONAL BAPTIST CONVENTION 65th Anniversary Program Dallas, Texas 1901 - 1966 : Theme "Together We Stand"

Souvenir Program, Published by the Woman's Convention Auxiliary to the National Baptist Convention, Dallas, Texas 1966. First edition. Softcover, illustrated green wrappers, side staple bound, 12" x 9", 62 pages, historically illustrated throughout with b&w portraits, and photographs of the Black woman and men leaders of the NCB. GOOD CONDITION: covers have edge and corner creasing and some closed tears to the top edge, internally light creasing to the corner-tips, and light wear from age and use, overall tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A remarkable historic documentation of the Black Women in the leadership roles of a pivotal African American religious and activist organization at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. Scarce, none in OCLC collections worldwide.

The National Baptist Convention (NBC) was founded in 1895, A major organization of African American Baptists and the nation's largest Black religious organization. Unfortunately, the NCB was not supportive of women's leadership so in 1900 two Black Women Suffragists and Civil Rights Activists, Sarah Willie Layten (1864-1950) and Nannie Helen Burroughs (1879-1961) played pivotal leadership roles in founding the Woman's Convention Auxiliary to the NBC. Representing over one million Black Baptist women, the Auxiliary provided means through which women organized on state and local levels around religious, political, and social issues, making their place of worship an epicenter for Black liberation and social change.

VERY GOOD condition, the covers are lightly soiled, internally the pages are tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

An amazing West Virginia and Ohio woman's first and only book.

What makes this book important is its author, Adah Camilla Dodd-Poince. She was an important, yet mostly overlooked, West Virginia and Ohio suffragette, political activist, supporter of "Negro" rights, educator, speaker, lecturer, and world traveller. She greatly deserves to be rediscovered. Also, this true 1900 first edition of her book is nearly impossible to find.

The novel takes place mostly in West Virginia. It is about a strong young woman named Venus McFarland who defied the urgings of her friends to stay put in the rural West Virginia county where she was born, and instead followed her dream of studying at a University and becoming a renowned speaker, lecturer, and proponent of education and women's rights. In the novel, Venus was becoming a popular lecturer when she married a man whom she loved but who demanded she give up her speaking engagements. Venus refused, separated from her husband, and went her own way for many years, lecturing throughout the world. Venus never backed down, and never bowed down to a man. The novel's three page ending is sappy, the man realizes what an oaf he was, begs for forgiveness, promises to be supportive, and, as a result, Venus and her ex get back together. Though a novel, the book seems to reflect much of the life and mind of its author, Adah Camilla Dodd-Poince.

This is one of my favorite passages: "Were she a man I would wager her voice would some day be heard in the halls of Congress; being a girl I don't know how it will end, but one thing is sure, I'll stand by the little witch to the end."

Though this was Adah Dodd-Poince's only novel, over her lifetime she wrote many articles, editorials, reports, reviews, etc. for magazines and newspapers in both West Virginia and Ohio, and a 10 page drama in 1949 about a Church in Dayton, Ohio.

About ADAH CAMILLA DODD-POINCE, b.1867 d.1955, (extracted from History of Berkeley County, West Virginia, 1928):

******Adah Camilla Dodd-Poince, daughter of David Dodd and daughter of Berkeley County, West Virginia. For many years she taught in the rural schools of Berkeley County. In 1922, she married John William Poince of Ohio and began her married life in Dayton, Ohio. She attended Emerson College of Oratory in Boston, Massachusetts, whose president was RALPH WALDO EMERSON. She made his lofty ideals her own and strived to advance education for women, bring honesty and humanity into politics, and establish higher standards of living for the poor.

To accomplish these goals she lectured in 11 states of the Union, toured Europe five times (visiting every country), traveled to Canada and Mexico, and saw much of Africa and the Near East. She stumped for Woman's Suffrage and "Negro" rights, was a campaign speaker in every state and national election from 1918-1928, and lectured in schools, colleges, churches, and before both men and womens' clubs.

During her life Mrs. Dodd-Poince contributed many articles to Ohio and West Virginia magazines and her editorials appeared in many newspapers. Her countless lectures and travelogues included: "To Him Who Hath"; "The Under Dog in the Fight"; "Vision, Voice and Victory"; "From the City of Commerce to the City of Silence"; "From the Eternal City to the Moslem Center"; and "Alaska, the Land of the Weird".******
