Recent professionally bound hardcovers, blue cloth covered boards with gilt titling to the spine, new endpapers, original book bound within, 3.75x6.25 inches (9x15.5 cm), 100 pages.

Condition: The pages of this 1752 bound-in book are complete but show their age, they are age toned, the title-page is worn, edge chipped, pulling from the binding, and its gutter edge is repaired/reinforced with a strip of brown paper that has affected some text and letters along that edge (see photos); otherwise the pages just have some shorelining, age spots, small edge repairs, and a bit of edge wear here and there; the book is tightly bound making the words at the fold a bit difficult to read. The recent covers and new endpapers are fine. Overall a complete, presentable copy.

About SOPHIA HUME (from Wikipedia):

******Sophia Wigington Hume (born South Carolina 1702 - died London 1774) was an American author and preacher associated with the Quakers. Hume was born and raised in a wealthy South Carolina Anglican family. In 1737, after the death of her husband, she gave up her wealth to live as a Quaker, becoming an outspoken advocate for the faith.

Hume was the author of books written to offer guidance to Quakers on a variety of topics including theology, philosophy, and personal ethics. She is significant as an early example of influential women whose writings were addressed to a wide audience regardless of the sex of the reader.

Given the wealth of her writings there is a puzzling lack of scholarship on Hume. One article by Phyllis Mack of Rutgers University is not focused specifically on Hume, but does discuss her place in both Quaker history and the larger contexts of women writers and feminism.******

There is an interesting handwritten comment in the margin at the bottom of page 39, the page where Digitalis Purpurea is discussed and its virtues extolled. The marginalia reads: "A friend of mine was killed by Digitalis, administered to subdue his pulse. It brought on mania, characterized by self accusations, and he died miserably." Wonder if it was written by E. Nott, M.D.?

FAIR condition, the covers have a bit of chipping at the ends but remain sturdy with bright gilt on the front cover; internally, the endpapers are browned, there is waterstaining to the margins of the first few pages, there is foxing throughout, there is a handwritten margin comment as noted above. and the leaf consisting of pages 47/48 has a large hole in its center and related scraping affecting text; despite its flaws, a complete copy of this rare 1843 second American Edition.

In these lectures Horace Mann argues that women's roles should be expanded, and that women should be permitted to work in a limited number of professions, most importantly as teachers of young children in public schools. Not a grandiose idea, but progressive at the time.

ASSOCIATION COPY. In 1837 Horace Mann became the first Secretary to the Massachusetts Board of Education. In 1839 William G. Bates joined Horace Mann as a member of the Massachusetts Board of Education. They worked together in this capacity for many years. During this time, primarily due to the efforts of Horace Mann, but with the assistance of William Bates, women were encouraged to study to become teachers in the State's Normal (i.e. Public) Schools, and many did. It makes sense that this book, on the importance of women becoming teachers, was sent by Horace Mann to his colleague William Bates.

1871-1895 FIFTEEN OBSTETRIC and GYNECOLOGY MEDICAL PAMPHLETS Bound Together in Hardcovers, by Dr. Vulliet, Maternity Surgeon, Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Paris

FIFTEEN MOSTLY OBSTETRIC and GYNECOLOGY PAMPHLETS dated 1871-1895, by Dr. F. VULLIET (Professor of Medicine University of Geneva, Maternity Surgeon, Member of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Paris). The 15 pamphlets are gathered and bound in one book, a sammelband.

The person who gathered the pamphlets and created this sammelband typed a two page Index which is pasted onto two blank front endpapers. The medical pamphlets are complete, with both their front and rear covers. All are professionally bound in hardcovers, 3/4 leather with five raised spine bands, gilt titling on the spine, and marbled endpapers. The book measures 6x9 inches. The pamphlets have various paginations and various publishers; they are bound-in chronologically with dates from 1871 to 1895. The TEXT of the pamphlets and the typed index are in FRENCH, except for two which are in German.

VERY GOOD condition, the covers have some light wear to their corner tips and spine ends but are solid and attractive; the bound in pamphlets are all very nice, age toning to some of the pages, overall tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid, very nice book and bound-in group of medical pamphlets.

AT WASANAETH MERCHED A GWRAGEDD CYMRU. The periodical was edited by CRANOGWEN, the pseudonym of Sarah Jane Rees. VOLUME VI (CYF. VI). One volume only. Perhaps a bound collection was published at the end of every year of the publication, I do not know. TEXT in WELSH. LLANELLI: Argraffwyd A Chyhoeddwyd Gan D. Williams A'I Fab., 1884. First Edition of Volume VI. Hardcovers, leather covered spine and corners with pebbled cloth covered boards, 5.5x7.5 inches, 384 pages. Illustrated with drawings and fancy title letters. Y FRYTHONES was a monthly Welsh language periodical for women, with much of the contents written by women of Wales. The contents were religious, literary, and general in nature, including articles on religion, raising children, the family, and the home, as well as poetry, music, games and biographies of prominent women. All was in Welsh. The periodical was edited by the teacher, poet, and unconventional woman, Sarah Jane Rees. The periodical was founded in 1874 and ended publication in 1891. It was created to continue the work of the Welsh women's periodical Y GYMRAES which was published for only two years, 1850 and 1851. Y GYMRAES was created in response to a government report which had strongly criticized the lax morals of Welsh women. Both Y GYMRAES and then Y FRYTHONES set out to promote higher intellectual and moral standards for women in Wales. Previously owned by KATIE HUMPHREYS, with her bookplate on the front free endpaper, and by ROBERT OWEN, with his small ink stamped name on the front free endpaper and title page. At the bottom of the front pastedown is a small label of A. BROMLEY / Printer, Lithographer, Bookbinder, &c / High Street / BANGOR (WALES). It appears likely that KATIE HUMPHREYS and ROBERT OWEN were both from Bangor Wales, as both names show up prominently there. GOOD CONDITION: the leather spine covering is scraped and rubbed, and the leather corners are rubbed at their edges; the pebbled cloth covered boards have a few smudges; otherwise the coverts remain solid and are doing their job well; internally there is a bit of foxing and some creases here and there, else the pages are tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid, nice copy. About CRAGOGWEN, pseudonym of SARAH JANE REES (from Wikipedia): ******Sarah Jane Rees, b.1839 d.1916, also known as CRANOGWEN, was a Welsh poet, editor, teacher, temperance campaigner, and proto-suffragette. She had two long lesbian relationships. Sarah Jane Rees was born at Llangrannog in Cardiganshire, the daughter of a mariner John Rees. She was a precocious child and insisted that she accompany her father to sea rather than undertake sewing and cooking chores. She attended school in both Cardigan and New Quay, and for a time studied at a navigation school in London, where she gained her master's certificate, a qualification allowing her to command a ship in any part of the world. In 1859 Sarah Jane set up her own navigation school in her home village of Llangrannog. In addition to teaching navigation and other subjects, she became editor of the Welsh language women's periodical Y Frythones (1878 to 1889), a platform for Welsh bluestockings and proto-suffragettes. Rees had two significant same-sex relationships. Her first was with Fanny Rees, a milliner's daughter from Troedyraur, near LLangrannog. About AUGUSTINE CHRISTINE HAUB (from Woman's Medical Journal - A Monthly Journal Published in the Interests of Women Physicians, August, 1914):

******Dr Augustine Catherine Haub died November 13, 1913, at her place of residence on Beacon Street in Boston after a painful illness of nine months. She was 33. She was born in Gold Hill, Nevada, September 19, 1870. She graduated from Boston University Medical School in 1893. She served as an intern [at the Massachusetts Homeopathic Hospital, Boston] the year after her graduation and showed a marked aptitude for surgical work. Her faithfulness to high ideals in her professional work gained for her a devoted clientele. She was fortunately the recipient of a considerable legacy from one of her patients in acknowledgment for unremitting devotion. Her parents are both living in Santa Rosa California.******

Dr. Horace Packard, a noted homeopathic surgeon, gave an acknowledgement to Dr. Haub in his 1906 book on homeopathic surgery FIVE YEARS' WORK IN SURGERY: "Grateful acknowledgement is herewith expressed for laborious work in surgical tabulating by Dr. Augustine C. Haub..."

The photographic image is 9.75 x 12.75 inches, mounted on a 11x13.75 inch stiff card mount. Fourteen women are in the photograph, eight of them are named on the backside of the mount. The mount has two holes at the top and one on the bottom, perhaps for hanging with a cord. Printed on the bottom left side is: "G. Waldon Smith", and on the bottom right side is: "Boston, Portland & Old Orchard".

The image is in VERY GOOD condition, some light shorelining to the upper left corner area, overall bright and clear, lovely. The mount is GOOD, with wear at its corners and edges. The mount is slightly bowed.

A previous owner wrote on the backside in pencil "Smith College / circa 1888", but the only woman that I investigated who had a degree mentioned was "Clara Elise von Wettberg" who graduated from Wellesley in 1879. Maybe she then went to Smith College? A couple of the other women whose names I looked into indicated that the date "circa 1888" is probably correct. "Jessie Estelle Kline" was born in 1870 and was married in 1900. Frances Marie Barker married Harvard graduate Hugh Means in 1901, they both were from and returned to Lawrence, Kansas. Miss Margaret Dale Harrison of Philadelphia was listed in the 1898 Philadelphia Blue Book, and she was married in 1899. I could not find another college mentioned, but then again these women had very little mentioned online that I could find, other than the MEN they married. Hmmm.

Whether Smith College or Wellesley, this c.1888 photograph of 14 well heeled college girls is quite a treasure.

******Sophia Elizabeth Reed (née Armstrong), b.1842 d,1915, was an American Oriental scholar and author whose books were widely used as college textbooks in universities worldwide for Oriental studies. Hers were, at the time, the only works by a woman accepted by the Philosophical Society of Great Britain.

In 1893, she was chairman of the Woman's Congress of Philology at Chicago and in 1896 became an editor of the Course of Universal Literature. Reed served two terms as the president of the Illinois Woman's Press Association. She received honorary degrees from Northwestern University, Wesleyan University,and Bethany College.

She was the mother of author Myrtle Reed, and two sons, Earl Howell and Charles B. Reed.******

Two Large Format Sales Agent's Policy Kits / Books, with receipts for policies sold and with information for the agent regarding pricing and issuing policies. Hartford Fire Insurance, 1895 and 1896. The sales agent that owned these policy portfolios was a woman, Abby C. Sturgeon of Newman, Stanislaus County, California. Her territory, deduced from the bound in written policies, was apparently Stanislaus and Merced Counties, California, including Modesto and surrounding areas. The two portfolio type kits / books measure 12.5 x 18 inches. They open to show Hartford Company Rules for Agents pasted on the inside front and rear covers. Also bound inside the portfolios are the stubs for policies that have been issued and full policy issuing sheets. One of the portfolios has 12 stubs that are filled in with names and other relevant issuing information. This portfolio has no blank policy forms remaining to be used. The other portfolio has 5 stubs with filled in info and has 14 policy sheets that remain unused, unissued. The two portfolio policy books are only in FAIR condition, the covers are soiled, have stains and sunning, and are shaky; internally some of the items tipped onto the inside covers are creased and wrinkled. Nonetheless these vintage insurance items are original and all the printing and handwriting is clear and legible. Some interesting genealogy from 19th Century Stanislaus County and Merced County, California. Interesting also is that this 1895 insurance sales agent of farm policies was a woman. In the book Lady Bell instructs how to play the game of Conversation as a Chess Game. Like chess, the conversationalists play either Black or White, making "moves" meant to win the game of conversation at evening gatherings. In the book, women play White and men play Black.

From the book: "I have adopted the phraseology of a Handbook to Chess as being most suitable for my purpose. By Player is meant the interlocutor, and for further convenience I shall designate the male interlocutor as Black, and the female as White...these being the prevalent hues of male and female costume at evening gatherings, where conversation runs the highest..."

Hardcovers, paper covered boards titled in black on the front cover and spine, and with black lining on the front and rear boards, 6x8.5 inches, 63 pages.

Lady Bell was born in Paris, France in 1851, the youngest of four children of Irish born Joseph Francis Olliffe (later Sir Joseph Olliffe) and Laura Cubitt. She was the second wife of Sir Hugh Bell, 2nd Baronet, of Rounton Grange, and therefore became Lady Bell.

Lady Bell was the stepmother to her husband's children from his first marriage: British explorer and key political figure in the Middle East, Gertrude Bell, b.1868 d.1926, and Maurice, 3rd Baronet, b.1871 d.1944.

In 1918 she was appointed as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). She died on 16 May 1930 at her home, 95 Sloane Street, Chelsea.******

Much of the handwriting is indecipherable to me, but here is how it begins: "Dearest Fredie: / This may be a help to you. If Fettie comes through and I see her I will ask if she has the book of..." The letter is signed/initialed M.Y. and dated (?) 20, 1934. On the folded backside it is addressed to Mrs. Alfred Muckle / Courtesy of Agnes Tutwiler". (AGNES TUTWILER was a relative of Martha Young; FREDIE likely was Martha Young's nickname for her married sister.)

Hardcover Book, illustrated covers, 249 pages. ILLUSTRATED with a frontispiece photograph "Witch Menées Child" and 27 b&w drawings. Though the drawings and their captions are meant to illustrate the folktales and dialects of Southern Blacks (mostly former slaves), and were widely admired by writers of the day, many would be considered racist today.

FAIR condition. The covers are soiled with a scattering of scrapes, the rear cover has some water staining to its bottom edge, the spine is substantially scraped and rubbed; nonetheless the covers are still solid and doing their job. Internally, the front inner hinge is cracked but holding well, there is foxing primarily to the first and last few pages, light finger smudges here and there, and one page has a thumbprint size chip to its front margin (not affecting text) and another with a 2 inch closed tear, else the inner pages remain tight, clean, clear and unmarked. All 27 b&w plates are present, a few have a bit of foxing. The laid-in letter has folds, creases, smudging and some stains, but the text remains clear (though the handwriting is difficult).

******Martha Strudwick Young, b.1862 d.1941, was an American regionalist writer known for her recounting of Southern folk tales, fables, and songs of Black life in the plantation era. She was admired by other writers for her skill with dialect. Young was inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 1986.

Martha Strudwick Young was the daughter of Confederate surgeon Elisha Young and Anne Eliza Ashe (Tutwiler) Young. The women's education and prison reform advocate Julia Strudwick Tutwiler was her aunt. Her family moved to Greensboro after the Civil War, and it was there that she learned the Southern folk tales and stories of African-American culture that would form the basis of her writings.

In 1901 Young published her first book, Plantation Songs for My Lady's Banjo and Other Negro Lyrics & Monologues. She followed up in 1902 with Plantation Bird Legends, which established her reputation as a leading writer of dialect tales. Young was one of a group of regional writers who helped to popularize the use of dialect as an adjunct to realism, including George Washington Cable, Kate Chopin, Mary Noailles Murfree, and Joel Chandler Harris. She has been called "Alabama's foremost folklorist."

From her 1986 induction into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame: "During a life which bridged two centuries, she recorded a rapidly disappearing culture, preserving it as a heritage for future generations."******

Hardcovers, blue cloth covered boards, gilt lettering on the front cover, 6x9 inches, marbled endpapers, 102 pp. plus 2 pages of osteopathy related ads at the rear.

GOOD condition, the covers have some light wear to the corner tips and spine ends, a couple half-dime size stains to the front edge of the front cover, and some sunning to the margins, but remain solid, with bright gilt titles; internally, there is light toning throughout, otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A nice, solid copy.

RARE TRUE FIRST EDITION. This important work by an early female Chicago M.D. and D.O. was reprinted many times, but the first edition has become almost impossible to find.

Hand-Illuminated Fine-Printing from the WOMAN OWNED, Minneapolis based, Chemith Press. Original thin card covers with hand printed and hand colored title label on the front, string bound, 11 double leaves with rice paper interleaving, only the first page of each double leaf is printed and colored. The booklet is complete with its integral ribbon which ties the booklet shut.

VERY GOOD Condition: The covers are toned, lightly soiled, have some small light stains and signs of handling. Each of the 11 hand illuminated leaves shimmers with colors and glitters with gold and brilliance. A lovely copy.

This little gem has become nearly impossible to find.

******Mary Moulton Cheney, b.1871 d.1957, was a Minneapolis based artist, designer, publisher and bookbinder associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1897 she opened a printmaking shop with Mary Marsh Smith named The Artcraft Shop: Sign of the Bay Tree. It was one of the first all woman private presses in the United States, making books, pamphlets, and bookplates. In 1902 she expanded into bookbinding and founded The Chemith Press which produced uniquely designed and finely printed books and pamphlets.

Cheney was also an influential figure in the development of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. In 1897 she organized the college's first course on design. She went on to become the principal of the college's design department, then the Dean of Women, and finally served as the college's president from 1917 to 1925.******

TEXTILE SAMPLE BOX of The National Dress Goods Company, with 598 FABRIC SWATCHES tipped onto captioned cards or into single-fold folders. The swatches are of various sizes: 2.75x3.75 inches (on cards), 3x4.5 inches (on cards), 2x2.5 inches (in folders). They are arranged in a box which is divided into several sections. Circa 1910. The sample box likely belonged to a saleswoman, as women were primarily who the National Dress Goods Company hired to sell their goods.

All the fabric swatches and cards are in VERY GOOD condition, some of the swatches and some of the folders are creased, "sold out" is written beside some of the swatches, overall everything is present and bright, clean and clear. The box's lid is splitting for a few inches along one of its top edges and has a few creases, otherwise the box is solid and doing its job well.

In a FAIR, price-clipped dustjacket. This very delicate and rare paper dj has completely split at the front flap fold, is splitting at the rear flap fold, has some corner tip wear and a bit of edge wear, but is complete (though again, the front flap is loose), bright and attractive in protective mylar.

About JOSEPHINE PINCKNEY (from Wikipedia):

******Josephine Lyons Scott Pinckney, b.1895 d.1957, was a novelist and poet in the literary revival of the American South after World War I. Her first book was a book of poems, Sea-Drinking Cities (1927); her best-selling novel was the social comedy, Three O'clock Dinner (1945).

Josephine Pinckney was born in Charleston, South Carolina to Thomas Pinkney and Camilla Scott. She attended Ashley Hall and established a literary magazine there, graduating in 1912. She then attended college at the College of Charleston, Radcliffe College, and Columbia University, and held an honorary degree from the College of Charleston, given in 1935. She received the Southern Authors Award in 1946.

As a poet, novelist, and essayist, Pinckney was an active participant in the Charleston Renaissance. In 1920, she co-founded the Poetry Society of South Carolina. She was involved in institutions such as the Charleston Museum and Dock Street Theatre and was an early proponent of the historic preservation of Charleston. She was an active member of the Society for the Preservation of Spirituals, which transcribed and annotated African American songs. Both organizations met for the first time at Pinckney's home at 21 King St. in Charleston.

She is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston.******

KRISTIN. Screenplay by ERNEST PASCAL. From the Novel KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER by SIGRID UNDSET. The screenplay is undated but perhaps circa 1960 (Ernest Pascal died in 1966). The novel Kristin Lavransdatter was first published in 1921 and has been in print ever since. This screenplay by Ernest Pascal was never produced. The only film of the novel that I am aware of is a 1995 Swedish Film directed by Liv Ullmann. That film, in Swedish, has no relation to this screenplay. Photocopied on plain white paper (photo offset copies were, and still are, common among production and working scripts; drafts could be quickly made and sent to the film's writers, producers, directors, etc.), 8.5x11 inches, 170 pages printed on one side only, pages are 3-hole punched and bound in heavy stock yellow paper covers with 2 brass brads. VERY GOOD condition, the covers have some light soiling and edgewear, otherwise the script is tight, bright, clean and unmarked. Softcovers, magazine style, side stapled, 44 total pages including 28 pages related to the Napa County Preliminary Beauty Pageant and 16 pages related to the Miss America Beauty Pageant. There are many local Napa ads in the Napa Pageant section.

The program was obviously duplicated for various cities that held local beauty pageants.16 of the pages are generic and have to do with the MISS AMERICA pageant, including past and present beauty queens. The local ads clearly brought in income for the pageant from every locality where a regional preliminary pageant was held.

There are portrait photographs of each of the 7 Napa Pageant finalists, a photograph of the former Miss Napa County, a list of rewards for the winner (including a $500 scholarship, oh wow!), and more!

GOOD condition, light signs of handling, overall tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A nice copy.
