1882 ELECTRICAL MEDICATION & ELECTRO-THERAPY - Cure Everything with Electric Shocks!!!
Clark's New System of ELECTRICAL MEDICATION - A Revised and Enlarged Edition. By A. W. Tipton, M.D.
CHICAGO: Chas. J. Johnson, 1882.
Proposes the use of electricity to help cure almost any disease and heal almost any defect.
Hardcovers, green cloth covered boards, gilt titles on front cover and spine, 6x9 inches (15x23 cm). Pagination: [1], 264 pages.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, a few in-text illustrations, and 4 pages of illustrations at the end that show 23 devices for "Electro-Therapeutic Uses". The electrical devices include a "Vaginal Electrode" and "Rectal Electrode". Yikes.
Previously owned by the 19th century New York physician Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh, with his ink stamp on a number of pages: "Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh / Physician and Notary Public / Sharon, N.Y.". An Internet search indicates Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh was a member of the "Eclectic Medical Society of New York" in the late 1800s.
Also previously owned by Gilbert R. Seigworth, MD, b.1932 d.2019, with his ownership label on the front free-endpaper: "Gilbert R. Seigworth, MD / Vestal, New York". An Internet search indicates Dr. Seigworth was an avid collector of antique medical equipment and antiquarian medical books.
CONDITION: The original covers are worn and not pretty - rubbed, scraped, stained, frayed at the spine ends, and splitting for 2 inches at the front fold; nonetheless they are solid and doing their job. Internally nice, the front and rear inner hinges are cracked but holding well, the thin endpapers have some light creasing, the text pages are lightly age toned as normal, otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A solid, complete, copy with well-worn but original covers.
ORIGINAL 1882 EDITION with interesting provenance.
Yes, electric shock therapy is making a comeback, but who knew
it could cure everything!
