STEWARDS MANUAL, 1904. History of Its Foundation, Aims and Purposes, Portraits and Biographies of Members, Famous Recipes and Instructions by Prominent Stewards.

PUBLISHED by the STEWARDS ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK CITY, Club Room, 49 East Twenty-Eighth Street, New York, 1904. FIRST EDITION.

A guide to the organization and practices of New York Stewards. Includes a history of the Stewards Association of New York, its members, and the RECIPES and SERVING TIPS of some of New York's most prominent stewards.

Hardcover book, red cloth covered boards, black title and design on the front cover (including the emblem of the Stewards Association of New York), 7x10.5 inches, 144 pages. Includes ads here and there throughout for items that Stewards at places such as the Ritz might need, e.g. Champagne, Vichy Water Spritzers, Porcelain Fine Tableware, etc.

ASSOCIATION COPY: "George Pratchett / New York Stewards Association / N.Y.", is hand-written on the front free endpaper.

LAID-IN is an official envelope of the Stewards Association of New York, with its printed emblem and address on the envelope's return address corner. The letter is postmarked 1903. It is addressed to "THE GORHAM MFG. CO. / Broadway & 19th Street / N.Y. / HOTEL DEPT." The Gorham Manufacturing Company was one of the largest American manufacturers of sterling and silverplate. GORHAM MANUFACTURING has an ad on page 3 of this 1904 book. The actual letter is lacking, so you'll just have to imagine the fancy silverware being ordered by a steward at a high-end fraternal members-only very exclusive New York club..

Condition: The covers have spotting and are worn at the corner tips and spine ends, but are still doing their job well; the page edges are foxed (page edges of the closed book); internally the pages are nice, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A solid, presentable copy.

RARE, ORIGINAL 1904 FIRST EDITION of the NEW YORK STEWARDS MANUAL. Quite special with the association to a New York Steward, and the laid-in 1903 Stewards Association of New York envelope addressed to Gorham Manufacturing.

"Declassified" began with the occupation of the Applied Electronics Laboratories (AEL). Printed between April 10 and May 12, the first issue was called "Unclassified", with subsequent issues titled "Declassified". On April 3, 1969 Stanford University students formed a coalition to take action against Vietnam War related research at Stanford. Backing up their demands with more direct action, they seized the Applied Electronics Laboratory on April 9, vowing to hold it until the administration capitulated. This nine-day sit-in at AEL, known as "The April Third Movement" ultimately brought an end to Stanford's secret military research. The students turned the laboratory printshop into an underground press distributing "Declassified" and other sensational exposés on AEL and the Stanford Research Institute (SRI). They managed to hold out for nine days until Stanford's president threatened to suspend them. Stanford Electronics Laboratories (SEL), part of SRI, had been running CIA sponsored electronic communications and surveillance research and other classified war contracts for the armed services. The April Third Movement was part of a national youth movement on university campuses across America - the Stanford students were successful in eliminating classified research at Stanford and contributing to the protests that ended the Vietnam War. This Rare Original Document is in GOOD CONDITION: Complete as issued. Just light wear, and stiff vertical/horizontal creasing affecting all the pages, from having been folded into quarters, otherwise bright, clean, and unmarked.

VERY GOOD Condition: light wear and a few small scuffs to the covers, and spinefolds, light top outer corner-tip bump affecting inner pages, spots of light foxing, and light signs of wear, otherwise, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A solid and lovely copy of this scarce viewbook. OCLC records only two copies held, rare book rooms of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and Vigo County Public Library Indiana.

The Commercial Club of Paris, a forerunner to the Chamber of Commerce, was an elite group of successful businessmen and a few women who were actively promoting the economic and cultural development of the city (all of whom are noted at the rear of the book). With this very descriptive 1904 publication they showcase the scenic beauty of the city of Paris and its existing commercial and cultural prosperity, while simultaneously seeking to grow Paris into a leading modern industrial center and a very desirable business and family friendly place to come and live.

In 1929, San Francisco Exchange seats sold for $250,000, and despite the stock market crash in October, the Exchange moved to newly built headquarters on Pine and Sansome streets in 1930. The trading floor was outfitted with cutting edge equipment to make communications move faster. There were telephone turret boards, pneumatic tube stations, an annunciator signal system, an automatically operated gong to open sessions and translux projectors of other exchanges' ticker tape. A ticker transmitter put out 300 characters per minute. Today the City Club occupies this space, but every once in a blue moon they let in a select few to view the hidden Diego Rivera mural the Exchange commissioned in 1930 .

The materials are all either 3 hole punched and in the rings of the binder, or stuffed loosely into the binders. All are clean and legible though in various states of handling, showing creases and use. The two books have relevant handwritten notes and marks. A jumbled treasure of genealogy. Have Fun!!! This JFK Memorial Edition features a full page portrait of JFK with a black memorial border on the front page, inside, within a black memorial border is President Kennedy's Inaugural Address delivered on January 20, 1962 with a b&w photograph of him speaking from the White House balcony. This is followed by the text of JFK's speech before the Convention of the American Federation of Labor Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFLCIO) in New York City on November 15, 1963, also with a black memorial border and b&w photo of him speaking. The back page shows a b&w photo of LBJ and a Message of Support in his new role as President of the United States sent to him by union leader David Dubinsky.

Founded in 1900, ILGWU was one of the largest and most significant labor unions in the American Labor Movement and one of the first with a primarily female membership. It's role in the history of women and immigrant Jewish and Italian women continues to be relevant today. Justice was published in English, Italian, Spanish, and Yiddish with much variation in content.

***** About the ILGWU from the Kheel Center for Labor Management Documentation and Archives Cornell University Library:

The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union was founded in New York City in 1900 by mostly Socialist immigrant workers who sought to unite the various crafts in the growing women's garment industry. The union soon reflected changes in the sector and rapidly organized thousands of unskilled and semi-skilled women, mostly Jewish and Italian young immigrants. Exemplifying the "new unionism," the ILGWU led two of the most widespread and best-known industrial strikes of the early Twentieth Century: the shirtwaist makers' strike of 1909 in New York City and the cloak makers' strike of 1910 in Chicago. The union also tried to adapt to the fragmented and unstable nature of the industry. It adopted the "protocol of peace," a system of industrial relations that attempted to ensure stability and limit strikes and production disruption by providing for an arbitration system to resolve disputes.

The ILGWU exemplified the European-style social unionism of its founding members. They pursued bread and butter issues but provided educational opportunities, benefits, and social programs to union members as well. In 1919, the ILGWU became the first American union to negotiate an unemployment compensation fund that was contributed to by its employers. The ILGWU also pioneered in the establishment of an extremely progressive health care program for its members which included not only regional Union Health Centers but also a resort for union workers, known as Unity House. The Union also had an imaginative and pioneering Education Department which not only trained workers in traditional union techniques, but provided courses in citizenship and the English language.
