VALUABLE ANNOTATIONS: The first five issues from 1943-1944 contain many relevant scientific annotations and tipped-in pages of notes. They appear to be from an expert in the field, but no name is noted.

FAIR condition, the spines of all the wrappers are scraped and worn with some splitting at the folds, one has some clear tape repair to the spine; two issues have blue ink staining to the top edge affecting the top blank margin of the pages but not affecting text; the text block of some of the issues is shaky and cracking here and there but holding; the first five issues have many relevant pencil annotations and taped in pages of notes as noted above; otherwise complete issues with text that is clear throughout.

The early issues of The Journal of Parapsychology, published by Duke University, are hard-to-find. The many annotations give these particular issues an extra sensory dimension!

******The Parapsychology Laboratory operated at Duke from 1930 to 1965. Originally research was conducted under the direction of William McDougall, Chairman of the Psychology Department, with the support of Duke President W. P. Few, University President. In the years following the deaths of McDougall in 1938 and Few in 1940 support for the Parapsychology Laboratory began to weaken, but the University continued to support it with materials and financial assistance in the form of office and research space, salaries of the secretaries and the Director, and research grants through the Graduate Research Council. In 1962, University support for parapsychological research at Duke pretty much ended, J. G. Pratt resigned from Duke in 1963, and by early 1965 the Parapsychology Research Lab became independent of the University.

Pagination: ff. [8] CCXVI (i.e. [8], 216 leaves numbered in Roman numerals). Illustrated with intricate woodcut crests on titles.

GOOD Condition: Covers are rubbed and have some scrapes, most noticeably on the leather corners, still the covers are solid, doing their job well, and quite attractive. Internally, the title page and the subsequent couple of leaves have a little professional conservation at top margin that affects a bit of the title page image and a couple words at the top of the following two leaves; there is the ghost of the removal of a bookplate on the front free-endpaper, the title page has some early marginalia that has been lined out and there is some relevant scholarly ink marginalia on the latter pages related to the description of obscure words in that part of the text; overall solid, tight, bright, clean and clear. A nice copy.

******Alejo Venegas de Busto, b.Toledo 1497 or 1498, d.Toledo, 1562, was a Spanish Renaissance writer, humanist, lexicographer, and considered a Spanish mystic.

His best known work is the AGONY OF THE TRANSITION TO DEATH... (Toledo, 1537), an ascetic, mystic work that he dedicated to Doña Ana de la Cerda, Countess of Melito, on the occasion of the death of the writer's great protector, her husband Count Diego de Mendoza. Condition: The front cover is present but detached (i.e. laid on loosely), the rear cover is almost detached and just holding on with its two upper binding cords; the spine covering is worn, scraped, faded and chipped, the boards are worn and chipped primarily at the corner and spine margin leather. Internally complete, the front free endpaper is chipped along the edges and corners and separating from the spine at the top five inches, the blank prelim page is also chipped along the edges; the first three introductory pages and the rear two index pages seem to have been printed on lesser paper and have toned / browned, but are still solid and completely legible, the 187 EMBLEMATICA ENGRAVED PLATES are all lovely, some light yellowing at the margins, some waviness at the bottom (likely from the plate printing process), a few with some toning, and a spot or two here and there; overall the plates are striking and gorgeous, and each suitable for framing imho. A complete copy with wonderfully esoteric plates that is more than suitable for rebinding / rebacking.

This 1783 edition is very scarce.

Also on the rear endpapers, written lightly in pencil, are several signatures of WILLIAM BUELL, JR. with the address of Lockport, Niagara County. Though the time period is correct I have no idea if these are the important William Buells of the period. So I leave it to you to determine the validity and historical interest of any of the signatures.

Condition: Front cover, front endpapers, and frontispiece are disbound and laid on loosely (like a sandwich); all pages are age toned, there is foxing throughout, edgewear and corner creases here and there, a few pages have tears including the last page which has a long closed tear, two plates that have a long closed tear and pieces missing from their front margin (not affecting text), some pages with small edge tears; lots of early signatures on the endpapers as noted above, and also lots of numbers written in pencil on the front endpapers and some in gall ink on the rear endpapers. A well used copy that is nonetheless complete and legible, with lots of great masonic occult imagery and musical scores.

GOOD condition, the covers have some wear to the corner tips and spine ends but are holding together well; internally, there is offsetting to the endpapers, foxing mainly to the margins here and there throughout, otherwise tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A solid, presentable copy.

About O.S. FOWLER (from Wikipedia):

******Orson Squire Fowler, b.1809 d.1887, was an American phrenologist and lecturer. He also popularized the octagon house in the middle of the nineteenth century.

With his brother Lorenzo Niles Fowler, he opened a phrenological office in New York City and soon they became the foremost proponents of phrenology in the United States. Orson wrote and lectured on phrenology, preservation of health, popular education and social reform.

O.S. Fowler held forth for the equality for women at a time when women had virtually no legal rights, championed children's rights at a time when child labor was widespread, and through his publications called for the end of slavery which he called a "monstrous evil".

HOWEVER, MANY OF HIS PHRENOLOGICAL BELIEFS WERE ABHORRENT and were used to justify slavery and advance a belief in African-American inferiority. Based on his phrenological views, Fowler wrote that coarse hair correlated with coarse fibers in the brain, and indicated coarse feelings that, he wrote, suggested people of African descent had poor verbal skills and traits that were best suited for nursing children or waiting on tables. Fowler was also known to be antisemitic.

Fowler was a teetotaler and vegetarian. He promoted a vegetarian diet in his book Physiology: Animal and Mental and was vice-president of the American Vegetarian Society in 1852. He defended animal rights and opposed the slaughter of animals. His magazine The American Phrenological Journal also supported vegetarianism.******

GOOD condition, the covers have some soiling, offsetting / toning, a few small marks, and some wear to the spine ends and corner tips, but are original and still doing their job well; internally, the pages are bright, clean, clear and unmarked. The eight plates are all in very good condition. A solid, presentable copy of this book from 1900.

******Count Alessandro di Cagliostro, b.1743 d.1795, was the alias of the occultist Giuseppe Balsamo (Joseph Balsamo).

Cagliostro was an Italian adventurer and self-styled magician. He became a glamorous figure associated with the royal courts of Europe where he pursued various occult arts, including psychic healing, alchemy and scrying. His reputation lingered for many decades after his death, but continued to deteriorate, as he came to be regarded as a charlatan and impostor, this view fortified by the savage attack of Thomas Carlyle in 1833, who pronounced him the Quack of Quacks. W.R.H. Trowbridge in his Cagliostro: the Splendour and Misery of a Master of Magic (1910), attempted a rehabilitation.

Occult historian Lewis Spence comments in his entry on Cagliostro that the swindler put his finagled wealth to good use by starting and funding a chain of maternity hospitals and orphanages around the continent. Occultist Aleister Crowley believed Cagliostro was one of his previous incarnations.******

MAZEPPA is the first edition, second state, with the colophon moved from page [70] to the verso of page 71 (the page of ads). Byron's early Vampire story "A FRAGMENT" (pages 57 to 69) was included by the Publisher John Murray without Byron's consent. "A Fragment" was written during the celebrated week at Geneva in 1816, during which Polidori conceived "The Vampyre" and Mary Shelley conceived her classic Frankenstein.

Byron's unfinished "A Fragment" was appended to Mazeppa by the publisher John Murray in June 1819 without the approval of Byron. On 20 March 1820, Byron wrote to Murray: "I shall not allow you to play the tricks you did last year with the prose you post-scribed to 'Mazeppa,' which I sent to you not to be published...and there you tacked it, without a word of explanation, and be damned to you."

The vampire fragment was a product of the ghost story contest that occurred in Geneva on 17 June 1816, when Byron stayed at the Villa Diodati with author and physician John William Polidori. Their guests were Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Godwin (soon to be Shelley), and Claire Clairmont. Mary recalled the contest and Byron's contribution in the 1831 introduction to Frankenstein: "We will each write a ghost story, said Lord Byron; and his proposition was acceded to. There were four of us. The noble author began a tale, a fragment of which was printed with his poem of Mazeppa."******

GOOD CONDITION: ex library with the usual stamps, shelf numbers, marks, and a bookplate. Ex lib aside the covers are sunned, have shelf, corner-tip, spine-end wear, and the rear cover has an area of white off-setting probably from old white paint in the bookshelf, but remain solid and fairly bright, internally just a touch of age, and a former owner's name stamp, otherwise tight, bright and clean. A scarce 1929 first edition lacking the paper jacket.

******Judah Loew ben Bezalel, b.1512-1526 d.1609, also called Rabbi Loew (aka Löw, Loewe, Löwe or Levai), widely known to scholars of Judaism as the Maharal of Prague or simply The Maharal, was an important Talmudic scholar, Jewish mystic, and philosopher who, for most of his life, served as the leading rabbi in the cities of Mikulov in Moravia and Prague in Bohemia.

Within the world of Torah and Talmudic scholarship, Loew is known for his works on Jewish philosophy and Jewish mysticism and his work Gur Aryeh al HaTorah, a supercommentary on Rashi's Torah commentary. He is also the subject of a 19th century legend that he created the Golem of Prague, an animate being fashioned from clay.

Maharal's numerous philosophical works have become cornerstones of Jewish thought. His writings tried to make the ideas of the Kabbalah (which he held to be the most deeply true of all the Torah) understandable to the average educated reader, by presenting them in a rigorously philosophical form, couched in terms accessible to the public. He felt that only the greatest of Torah scholars are able to perceive the full intent of the Kabbalistic works in their complex entirety, but much could be comprehended by the general reader if presented in a rational and philosophic form. His main kabbalistic influences appear to have been the Zohar, Sefer Yetzirah, and traditions of the Chassidei Ashkenaz.

Miharal was in favor of scientific research, but believed the Talmudic, Midrashic, and Aggadic teachings refer to matters far beyond the sphere of natural science.

The Maharal is the subject of the legend about the creation of a golem, a creature made out of clay to defend the Jews of the Prague Ghetto from antisemitic attacks. He is said to have used mystical powers based on esoteric knowledge of how God created Adam.

Rabbi Loew is buried at the Old Jewish Cemetery, Prague in Josefov, where his grave and tombstone can still be visited.******
