The text describes Paris including specific businesses, cultural and civic institutions. VERY GOOD Condition: light wear and a few small scuffs to the covers, and spinefolds, light top outer corner-tip bump affecting inner pages, spots of light foxing, and light signs of wear, otherwise, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A solid and lovely copy of this scarce viewbook. OCLC records only two copies held, rare book rooms of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and Vigo County Public Library Indiana.

The Commercial Club of Paris, a forerunner to the Chamber of Commerce, was an elite group of successful businessmen and a few women who were actively promoting the economic and cultural development of the city (all of whom are noted at the rear of the book). With this very descriptive 1904 publication they showcase the scenic beauty of the city of Paris and its existing commercial and cultural prosperity, while simultaneously seeking to grow Paris into a leading modern industrial center and a very desirable business and family friendly place to come and live.

NEAR FINE book, there is a bump to the lower right corner of the front cover and to the bottom of the spine, and there is a 1 inch thin indent on Plate IV, otherwise beautiful; in a GOOD slipcase that has a few bumps and some general wear but is solid and doing its job well.

Marc'Antonio Dal Re, b.1697 d.1766, was an Italian engraver and publisher. He is known for his engravings of villas and vedute of the State of Milan.

Hardbound in original dark blue textured cloth with gilt printing on the front cover, 11" x 7.5", 236 pages, illustrated with a photographic frontispiece portrait of Handy, two full page photographic illustrations, and eight full page illustrations of African Americans from sketches by Beauford De Laney, and musical scores. VERY GOOD CONDITION: a few droplet stains and light wear to the covers, internally, toning to the pastedown and a penned gift inscription from the former owner Kitty Dalton, a chorus girl for Billy Rose on the ffep, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

Handy's important musical and cultural collection of song tributes to outstanding African Americans, explores the different dimensions of musical development that exist within Black culture, while also highlighting the struggle and triumph that exist for people of color. Includes poetry, illustrations, children's songs, choral works, scenes from major works, and art songs. Handy, the "Father of the Blues" composed the music for Phillis Wheatley poetry, and collaborated with Langston Hughes on a number of his poems as did Margaret Bonds, there are over 30 contributors including jazz luminaries Eubie Blake, James P. Johnson, Andy Razaf, Luckey Roberts and Ismay Andrews.

William Christopher Handy (1873-1958) born to former slaves, W. C. Handy was one of the first to compose, play and publish a steady stream of blues, spiritual arrangements, marches, hymns, and miscellaneous songs. His collections include Blues: An Anthology (1941), and A Book of Negro Spirituals (1938). His books include: Negro Authors and Composers of the United States (1936), Father of the Blues (1941), and Unsung American Sung (1944).

An Abstract Of The Title To The Properties Owned Or Claimed By THE VOLCANO GOLD GRAVEL MINING COMPANY In Township No. Three, Amador County, California

Compiled by George I. Wright & Sons and Fontenrose & Fontenrose, Jackson, Amador County, California, March 21, 1907. Hardbound in textured brown cloth two prong binder with red cloth corners, metal clasp, and patterned pastedowns, title handwritten in black and red pen on the front cover, 11.75" x 9", 290 pages of photostatic prints (an early photomechanical process similar to blueprints but printed on a blackground on white paper). VERY GOOD CONDITION: complete as issued, just some light edgewear, toning to page edges, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A scarce mining record, I could not find another copy. From the Winship Estate, a pioneering Marin County family.

The Volcano Gold Gravel Mining Company was a San Francisco company established for the purpose of running a tunnel from Sutter Creek into Volcano Flat, and mining for gold, to separate the gold from the gravel, to acquire mineral lands by purchase or otherwise in Amador County, and to mine such lands, sell and dispose of the same; to dig and acquire ditches and water rights, build viaducts, and sell and dispose of the same, and of water. The records are from 1854 to 1907. They reveal a chronological overview of the historical legal documentation associated with the properties including titles to real property, mining claims, transfers and ownership records. One of the principals in the firm was Isaac Bluxome, noted and notorious San Francisco pioneer who founded of the California National Guard and the Committee of Safety of 1856, better known as the Vigilance Committee.

The Volcano Gold Gravel Mining Company was one of the most extensive gravel mines during the Gold Rush, and hundreds of acres of valuable mining lands were emptied by its enterprises. In the heart of the Motherlode, Amador County's landscape changed considerably from when gold seekers first began to dig into the banks along its rivers and streams in 1848. As the excitement of the California Gold Rush got underway, it didn't take long for miners to discover that gold could be found away from the natural rivers and streambeds. By 1850 miners began to dig into earth and rock to uncover gold imprisoned in deep veins of the quartz rock, mining in dry diggings. Washing the gold required that they dig ditches and build flumes to bring the water to the dry diggings. Within a year, hardrock mining was underway and in 1852 hydraulic mining began. Until the passage of the anti-hydraulic mining laws, one of the first environmental laws to protect the environment .

First edition thus, two volumes, Introduction By Bradford Torrey. xliii, 260; vi, 261-523 pages, illustrated with photogravures. Art nouveau cover design by Sarah Wyman Whitman, featuring stylized milkweed leaves, a reference to the native plant frequently mentioned in Thoreau's writings Bound in publisher's green cloth with decorative gilt stamping, laid endpapers, top edge gilt. A lovely edition of an American classic.

Very Good Condition: lacking dustjackets, light rubbing, scratching to covers, rear cover of volume 2 with an apple seed size tape piece adhered to an embossed gilt decoration, light wear to the corners, some light scrapes to the fore-edge, and sunned spines. Internally, off-setting to the prelim pages of Volume 2 from a newspaper article laid in (still present), and a bottom corner margin shoreline to the half title and frontis plates which lightly and diminishingly affect the following 8 plates. Overall, tight, bright, clean, unmarked and the gilt remains quite bright.

Sarah Wyman Whitman (1842-1904) was a Painter, Designer of book covers and stained glass, an Interior Decorator, Author, Poet, and Teacher. She was one of the most prominent book designers during the golden age of decorative bindings, notable for her elegant and restrained designs that made use of the rear board as well as the front. She was the first professional woman artist regularly employed by Boston publisher Houghton Mifflin. Whitman was one of the few successful female designers of her time, and her work was highly respected by her peers. She was also a prominent philanthropist and supporter of women's education and suffrage. Whitman's legacy continues to inspire and influence contemporary artists and designers.

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American writer, philosopher, and naturalist, best known for his book "Walden," a reflection on simple living in natural surroundings. Thoreau was a transcendentalist who believed in the importance of individualism, self-reliance, and the power of nature. He was also an advocate for civil disobedience and the abolition of slavery. Thoreau's writings continue to inspire and influence people today, and he is considered one of the most important figures in American literature and philosophy.

About the author ILLAN PALAT (from the BLAVATNIK ARCHIVE website):

******Illan Palat was born on April 10, 1924, in Ukraine. When he was three, his family had their property confiscated and was forced to move to the Jewish Autonomous Oblast. They lived and worked in Birofeld, a local kolkhoz, until Palat's father learned accounting and relocated his family to Birobidzhan. Palat was drafted in October 1942, underwent infantry training, and was sent to the front. His first combat experience was in the Battle of Kursk, where he fought on the front line in a 45mm anti-tank artillery unit. The battles were brutal, and Palat's unit suffered heavy losses. There were intermittent shortages of food and water, but there was also a strong sense of camaraderie among all soldiers, regardless of their backgrounds. In late 1943, Palat was severely wounded in the leg; he was saved by another solider, who carried him off the battlefield and into a local house. After eight months of hospitalization and multiple surgeries, Palat returned to Birobidzhan on crutches. Of the forty-three young men who were drafted from Birobidzhan with him, only two would come back. After demobilization, Palat worked as a watchmaker in Birobidzhan, until doctors advised him to move to a warmer climate because of his wound. In 1947, Palat moved to Tbilisi, Georgia, where he worked in construction. In 1977, he moved to United States and lived in New York and San Francisco. In addition to working as a contractor, he wrote the books A SOLDIER FROM BIROBIDZHAN and THE WAR AND THE HOLOCAUST.******

This piece by piece valuation was undertaken by a Professional Auctioneer retained by the Guaranty Trust Company of New York. 12 pages, carbons, 11x16 inch paper, stapled at the top. The personal property is in sections by room, i.e. LIVING ROOM, KITCHEN, UPSTAIRS FOYER, and sometimes by category, i.e. STERLING SILVER. Only FAIR condition, the paper has browned, some of the carbon typescript is blurred and hard to read, the pages are all tearing and chipping at the bottom blank margin and some at the top margin as well, there are relevant handwritten notes and marks throughout, there are numerous folds where this has been folded into a small size. Nonetheless a complete and interesting inventory valuation of the entire personal property of Irene Russell Washburn at the time of her death in 1957. ******The Medicine Ball Caravan is a documentary film that was released in August 1971. Warner Bros. funded the cross-country trip with the intention of capitalizing on the success of the Woodstock documentary. It captured a massive caravan of 150 hippies, musicians (including B.B. King), and the Hog Farm commune traveling from San Francisco to D.C. The footage was shot by French director François Reichenbach, however Warner Bros. executives were not happy with it, so a young Martin Scorsese was brought in to edit the film to make it more commercial. The film was a commercial and critical flop.******
