A graphic treasure trove of imagery, construction plans, projects, renderings, maps, and photographs illuminating what today looks like a science fictional landscape. An iconic publication featuring the most influential underground punk artists through interviews, photographs, collages, and artwork. Jello Biafra thought it was the greatest underground zine ever.

Founded and published by original Blue Cheer keyboardist V. Vale while working at City Lights Bookstore, Vale got his original funding from Allan Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. All the most important (and some forgotten) UK and US Punk and New Wave bands are represented including the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Nuns, Pere Ubu, Crime, Dead Kennedys, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Screamers, Clash, Throbbing Gristle, Buzzcocks, Talking Heads, DEVO, Weirdos, Suicide, Avengers, Alternative TV, The Damned, Blondie, Weirdos, Dead Boys, The Cramps, Siouxsie & The Banshees, DNA, Sleepers, Zeros, Chrome, Cabaret Voltaire, Mutants, Patti Palladin, Helen Wheels, The Slits, and so many more. Ballard, John Waters, David Lynch, Bruce Conner, Russ Meyer, Diane Di Prima, Lou Reed, Steve Jones, Vivienne Westwood, and Nico Ordway. SEARCH AND DESTROY ceased publication with issue #11 in 1979, but in 1980 it morphed into RE/SEARCH which ran three punk issues in the same style. Afterwards the publication completely changed into a glossy book form featuring underground and counterculture topics.

Named for the Stooge's proto punk anthem, SEARCH AND DESTROY remains one of the most important, vibrant, and influential periodicals to emerge from punk. A Complete run of this seminal punk zine.

ASSOCIATION COPY: This set was previously owned by WINFIELD SCOTT WELLINGTON, b.1897 d.1979, with his bold and florid signature on the front pastedown of volumes 2-9. Wellington was a noted San Francisco Bay Area Architect, Museum Director, Artist, and Professor of Decorative Arts at UC Berkeley. He was also a noted collector of ceramics.

Each volume covers a different period in East-Asian Ceramic History:

    (1) Japan: Pre-Historic, Proto-Historic and Early Historic Periods. (2) Japan: Ceramics in the Nara to Muromachi Periods. (3) Japan: Ceramics in the Momoyama period. (4) Japan Ceramics in the Edo Period (part I).

    (5) Japan: Ceramics in the Edo period (part II). (6) The Edo period (part III). (7) Tea Ceremony Implements. (8) From Ancient China to Six Dynasties. (9) China: Sui and Tang Dynasties. (10) China: Sung and Liao Dynasties. (11) China: Yuan and Ming Dynasties. (12) China: Ch'ing Dynasty and Annamese and Thai Ceramics. (13) Korea: Pre-Koryo and Koryo Periods. (14) Korean Ceramics in the Li Dynasty.

Volumes 15 and 16 which ARE NOT part of this set, were the only volumes not related to East-Asian ceramics. Volume 15 is on the ceramics of "Europe & Others" and. Volume 16 is on Contemporary Ceramics (mainly non-Asian). As a collector of indigenous East-Asian ceramics perhaps this is why Professor Winfield Scott Wellington was not interested in those last two works.

CONDITION: Volume 1 is in GOOD condition: The back cover of has the ghost of a large sticker that was removed, the front and rear covers have some small stains, and there is a bump to the top of the spine; internally, there is some waviness to the bottom margin of the first few pages, and there are small rust stains and light offsetting to the rear endpapers from the laid-in English language booklet, otherwise the book is tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

VOLUMES 2-14 are in VERY GOOD condition, just a bit of soiling to some of the covers; tissue guards have been removed from most of the frontispieces, else tight, bright, clear, clean and unmarked.

ALL THE PLATES (1800+ in the 14 volume set) are brilliant.

A couple of the laid-in booklets are wavy, and a couple have pulled from their staples but are complete.

Considered to be one of the most extensive published works on East-Asian ceramics.

    From the Photographer's Statement leaf:

******I photographed these kerbstones again and again from 1989 to 1992, lying behind my splayed tripod in the wet grass of Irish summer mornings. They stand on the rest of a hilly ridge now mostly called Loughcrew, about fifty miles southwest of Dublin in county Meath, Ireland. For centuries the place was known as Slieve na Callighe or Sliabh na Cailli (the Hill of the Witch or Hag). The stones are part of a Neolithic ceremonial center, a site of veneration and pilgrimage built sometime around 5,500 years ago to house and honor the dead. It also may have served as a tribute or means of connection to the sun, moon, stars, as well as to the earth and its seasons. Together with sacred architecture worldwide, the many stone monuments in ruins at Loughcrew speak to us of the purpose and meaning of human existence - our births and deaths, the deeds and events of our lives over time. Deep-rooted and comforting, these stones represent the power of human imagination and our connection to the cosmos.******

    About the Photographer, Jean McMann:

******Jean M. McMann graduated from the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley with both a Master of Arts in Design in 1976 and a Ph.D. in Architecture in 1991. She taught courses in writing, photography, and cultural studies at her alma mater and at the San Francisco Art Institute. She authored Riddles of the Stone Age: Rock Carvings of Ancient Europe, and Altars and Icons: Sacred Spaces in Everyday Life. Ms. McMann lived in Mill Valley, California, with her husband, Doug Muir. Both were noted photographers. Jean McMann died in 2015 (her husband a year later).******

Wrappers / Softcovers, side stapled, 8.5x11 inches, 60 unnumbered pages. NO TEXT, ALL ART.

VERY GOOD condition book, some wear to the cover's corners, otherwise tight, bright, clean and clear. The laid-in letter is on onion skin paper. Its edges are creased with associated small closed tears. The writing remains bright and clear.

You can read about all six artists at various places online.

Here is a bit about Margaret "Margy" Boyd, to whom the book is inscribed (from a 2017 obituary in the SF Chronicle):

******Margy Boyd was founding chair of the Modern Art Council of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and later founded SFMOMA's long standing monthly tours of artists at work in their studios, which she evolved into the travel department. After leaving SFMOMA she founded Margy Boyd Art Tours, a firm that combined her passion for art and cultural tourism around the world. Margy also served as a Trustee of the California Institute of Integral Studies.******

******This study focuses upon the language of the Song of Songs in an attempt to see how individual images work together in the constitution of a poetic unity. The perception of certain imaginative fields, each of which organizes a range of related imagery, is helpful to an appreciation of the symbolic density which certain images acquire in the course of the Song's movement and to an acknowledgment of their capacity for narrativity.******

About the SONG OF SONGS (from Wikipedia):

******The Song of Songs, also called the Canticle of Canticles or the Song of Solomon, is an erotic poem, one of the five megillot (scrolls) in the Ketuvim (writings), the last section of the Tanakh. It is unique within the Hebrew Bible: it shows no interest in Law or Covenant or the God of Israel, nor does it teach or explore wisdom like Proverbs or Ecclesiastes (although it does have some affinities to wisdom literature, as the ascription to the 10th century BCE King of Israel Solomon indicates); instead, it celebrates sexual love, giving "the voices of two lovers, praising each other, yearning for each other, proffering invitations to enjoy".

The two lovers are in harmony, each desiring the other and rejoicing in sexual intimacy. The women of Jerusalem form a chorus to the lovers, functioning as an audience whose participation in the lovers' erotic encounters facilitates the participation of the reader.

Scholars differ in assessing when it was written, with estimates ranging from the 10th to 2nd century BCE, with linguistic analysis suggesting the 3rd century.******

There are lots of underlining, circling of text, and margin marks noting various passages, likely made by Curtis Imrie or Rick Schmidt in preparation for one film project or another. A filmmaker's actual working copy of a Brakhage filmmaking book. Nice.

Stan Brakhage is considered to be one of the most important figures in 20th century experimental film. Rick Schmidt is a prolific independent filmmaker and the author of the highly regarded book: "Feature Filmmaking at Used Car Prices". Curtis Imrie was an independent filmmaker, radio personality, and champion burro racer.

The inscription reads: "Rick / One good support book deserves another. B-4 FX2 @ Used Car $ [before Feature Filmmaking At Used Car Prices] there was only one Bible for unrepentant actor filmmakers. This one. Appropriately leather bound [actually leatherette I think]. Either return it sometime or walk the talk writing with an audio visual diamond where we diagram the human heart. I'll be a major color on your palette anytime but hey...face up to your talent. Do it. / as ever, C [initialed]"

It appears likely that Rick Schmidt sent Curtis Imrie a copy of his book "Feature Filmmaking At Used Car Prices", and Imrie reciprocated by sending Schmidt a copy of Brakhage's book. It is unclear to me who had Brakhage sign the book. Rick Schmidt was more in Brakhage's circle, they both were prolific independent filmmakers and went to many of the same film conferences, independent film events, etc.; but Curtis Imrie and Stan Brakhage both spent a lot of time living in Colorado.

What a journey through the hands of independent filmmakers - Stan Brakhage - Curtis Imrie - Rick Schmidt.

CONDITION: A couple small indents to the covers, lots of underlining, circling, and margin marks noting important passages (as detailed above), a pea size stain to the front margin of one page of text; otherwise tight, bright and clean, with signatures and inscriptions that are bright, clear and bold.

A little research uncovers the fact that Henry Holt and Company, publisher of THIS book in 1952, announced in the same year that it was planning to publish a book on Lauritz Melchior to be written by Stephen Longstreet. Obviously that is why Longstreet's inscription in this book states "in the hope of a big book about a big man". (Publisher's Weekly Volume 162, dated 1952, includes the statement "Holt also plans to bring out a biography of the Danish Tenor, Lauritz Melchior, written by Stephen Longstreet.") The book apparently was never published.

He later wrote "The Helen Morgan Story," and as a television writer in the '50s and '60s he wrote for "Playhouse 90."
