About the author ILLAN PALAT (from the BLAVATNIK ARCHIVE website):

******Illan Palat was born on April 10, 1924, in Ukraine. When he was three, his family had their property confiscated and was forced to move to the Jewish Autonomous Oblast. They lived and worked in Birofeld, a local kolkhoz, until Palat's father learned accounting and relocated his family to Birobidzhan. Palat was drafted in October 1942, underwent infantry training, and was sent to the front. His first combat experience was in the Battle of Kursk, where he fought on the front line in a 45mm anti-tank artillery unit. The battles were brutal, and Palat's unit suffered heavy losses. There were intermittent shortages of food and water, but there was also a strong sense of camaraderie among all soldiers, regardless of their backgrounds. In late 1943, Palat was severely wounded in the leg; he was saved by another solider, who carried him off the battlefield and into a local house. After eight months of hospitalization and multiple surgeries, Palat returned to Birobidzhan on crutches. Of the forty-three young men who were drafted from Birobidzhan with him, only two would come back. After demobilization, Palat worked as a watchmaker in Birobidzhan, until doctors advised him to move to a warmer climate because of his wound. In 1947, Palat moved to Tbilisi, Georgia, where he worked in construction. In 1977, he moved to United States and lived in New York and San Francisco. In addition to working as a contractor, he wrote the books A SOLDIER FROM BIROBIDZHAN and THE WAR AND THE HOLOCAUST.******

Carbon typescript in legal paper covers, prepared by Forrest Hyde, Attorney, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York. Signed by Elizabeth R. Washburn and Irene Russell Washburn. Also signed by a Westchester County, New York, Notary Public, along with his official bindstamp. 24 pages, carbons, 8.5x12 inches, paper blue lined at the margins, stapled at the top, in a blue paper cover, folded for filing. This piece by piece valuation was undertaken by a Professional Auctioneer retained by the Guaranty Trust Company of New York. 12 pages, carbons, 11x16 inch paper, stapled at the top. The personal property is in sections by room, i.e. LIVING ROOM, KITCHEN, UPSTAIRS FOYER, and sometimes by category, i.e. STERLING SILVER. Only FAIR condition, the paper has browned, some of the carbon typescript is blurred and hard to read, the pages are all tearing and chipping at the bottom blank margin and some at the top margin as well, there are relevant handwritten notes and marks throughout, there are numerous folds where this has been folded into a small size. Nonetheless a complete and interesting inventory valuation of the entire personal property of Irene Russell Washburn at the time of her death in 1957. Dated January 1957, the year of the death of Irene Russell Washburn.

An important bibliographical reference for that Witch in your life or soul.

From the Cornell University Library website:

******Part of Cornell University Library's Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, Cornell's Witchcraft Collection contains over 3,000 titles documenting the history of the Inquisition and the persecution of witchcraft, primarily in Europe.

The majority of the Witchcraft Collection was acquired in the 1880s through the collaborative efforts of Andrew Dickson White, Cornell's first President, and his first librarian, George Lincoln Burr. The collection documents the earliest and the latest manifestations of the belief in witchcraft as well as its geographical boundaries, and elaborates this history with works on canon law, the Inquisition, torture, demonology, trial testimony, and narratives. The collection focuses on witchcraft not as folklore or anthropology, but as theology and as religious heresy.

It features many early texts from the period when the theory of the heresy of witchcraft was being formulated, including fourteen Latin editions of the Malleus maleficarum, which codified church dogma on heresy. Four of these Latin editions were printed in the fifteenth-century, most notably the scarce first edition printed before April 14, 1487. The collection also contains other defining texts of the doctrinal discussion of demonology, such as Jean Bodin's De la Demonmanie des sorciers (1580), Nicolas Remi's Daemonlatreiae (1595), Henri Boguet's Discours des sorciers(1602) and Pierre de Lancre's Tableau de I'inconstance des mauvais anges (1612).

Significant in the collection are a small and extremely rare number of works by theologians who opposed the Inquisition, such as those of Cornelius Loos, the first theologian in Germany to write against the witch hunts. The most important materials in the Witchcraft collection, however, are the court records of the trials of witches, including original manuscript depositions taken from the victims. These documents, in both original manuscript and in print, reveal the harsh outcome of the more remote doctrinal disputes. Perhaps the most significant of all manuscripts in the Witchcraft collection is the minutes of the witchcraft trial of Dietrich Flade, a sixteenth century city judge and rector who spoke out against the cruelty and injustice of the persecutions in the 1580s. These and other trial documents are listed in the collection's finding aid.

In the 21st century, curators began building on AD White's witchcraft collection by acquiring modern materials such as posters and publicity for films featuring witches or sorcery, and newsletters on the activities of contemporary Wiccan and Pagan communities.******

    (1) Letter from ZANE GREY to HENRY PHILLIPS regarding Phillips telling people that Grey writes his books with the intent that they be turned into movies, and stating that he, Phillips, taught Grey how to do so. The letter is written on a folded single sheet of paper (making 4 pages) and written on 3 of the 4 pages. ZANE GREY and HENRY WALLACE PHILLIPS - TWO MANUSCRIPT LETTERS by TWO WRITERS OF WESTERNS, laid into a SIGNED BOOK by H.W. Phillips. THE WRITERS DID NOT LIKE EACH OTHER.

It is addressed to Mr. Henry Phillips, New York City, and has the return address of Middletown, N.Y. It only has the month and day, March 26, and not the year. The letter reads in part:

"I have been informed that you have used my name in talks on moving-pictures, etc. - claiming that I came to you to learn how to write my books so they would be adaptable to the screen...I have never written a line in the interest of moving-pictures...different people claimed they heard you...if it is true please do not do that any more...And please consider how embarrassing it would be for you if I happened to drop in somewhere and hear you make such a statement...Yours sincerely / Zane Grey."

Zane Grey has had more films made based on his books than perhaps any other author in history, yet in this handwritten letter he states that he has "never written a line in the interest of motion-pictures". Uh, ok then.

    (2) An unrelated letter from HENRY PHILLIPS to a MR. BURKHARDT. In the letter Phillips states he will not participate in an upcoming dinner (presumably to be attended by hopeful authors) but instead sends his advice about writing in this letter. The letter is written on a folded single sheet of paper (making 4 pages) and written on 2 of the 4 pages, it is dated April 10, '05. The letter reads in part:

"...The most practical help I can offer towards the object of the dinner is to turn out stuff that will sell - I defy anyone to dispute that. It is so simple that even I can understand it. And as I am the sort of person who would often rather do other things than write I have to keep close to my job...Sincerely / H. W. Phillips."

Though not directly related to the Zane Grey letter, one can sense why Grey is filled with anger towards Phillips. Grey's letter shows how serious he is about his writing, and Phillips' letter shows how flippant he is about writing, saying how easy it is for anyone to write [including Grey] and to only do it for money [which means for the movies, I suppose].

    (3) BOTH LETTERS are laid into a WESTERN novel by HENRY WALLACE PHILLIPS. The book is SIGNED by H. W. PHILLIPS on the front free-endpaper. The book is: RED SAUNDERS: His Adventures West & East. Published by McClure, Phillips & Co., New York, eighth printing, 1907. Hardcover book, no dustjacket as issued, 210 pages.

    ****************************

CONDITION: Both of the letters are in VERY GOOD condition, some old folds, overall solid, bright and clear. The book is in GOOD condition, some scrapes and marks to the covers, fading to the spine, internally, some inner hinges are cracked but holding, overall the pages are bright, clean and unmarked.

THE OLD WEST HAD SIX GUNS, THESE COMPETING WESTERN WRITERS HAD POISON PENS.

Bonhams is to display lost masterpieces from a private collection by Gutai and ZERO groups for the first time since the 1960s. It offers an opportunity to reassess these ground breaking art movements, both of which have recently been in the spotlight in exhibitions such as Zero: Countdown to Tomorrow at The Guggenheim, New York. Writing about the groups for Bonhams Magazine, Serpentine Co-Director, Hans Ulrich Obrist described the emergence of these artists as one of the great moments of the avant garde in the post war era.

Bonhams Head of Contemporary Art, Ralph Taylor, says, "To have the opportunity to host this museum quality collection at Bonhams is a rare and wonderful privilege. It is exactly where Bonhams excels; demonstrating connoisseurship and using the profile of an auction house to rediscover forgotten masterpieces and to champion the very best in Post War & Contemporary art."

Among the works to be on view in Bonhams headquarters on New Bond Street are: Three works from Yayoi Kusama's first solo European show in 1965: Macaroni Shirt, Red Dots and Phallic Bottle Tray; Kazuo Shiraga's Red Fan; A suite of four early and delicate works by Jan Schoonhoven; A large piece by Günther Uecker from 1967.

The first time ZERO and Gutai art were shown together was at the 1965 Stedelijk Museum's Nul exhibition. In 2006, this Nul 1965 show was reconstructed in the ZERO exhibition at Museum Kunst Palast in Düsseldorf. This was the beginning of the revival in both ZERO and Gutai we have witnessed today.******
