LARGE COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS by FRED PRESS of PANAMA, ECUADOR, GUATEMALA, HONDURAS and other locales in CENTRAL AMERICA. ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS taken by FRED PRESS while stationed with the SIXTH AIR FORCE in PANAMA during WORLD WAR II. During this time he was ART EDITOR and then MANAGING EDITOR of the CARIBBEAN BREEZE, the official publication of the Sixth Air Force. He was also the ARTIST for the covers of many issues. FRED PRESS went on to become an IMPORTANT MID-CENTURY DESIGNER of GLASSWARE, some of which can still be found on eBay. He was also a noted sculptor and artist.

The lot includes: 51 mounted b&w photographs, most ranging from 5.5x7.5 to 7.5x9.5 inches, all mounted on 10x12 inch boards; PLUS approximately 200 loose mostly 4x5 inch photographs. All the photographs show an artist's eye, truly capturing the native peoples and their culture. They are sharp, clear, and quite wonderful. The mounted photos were once separated by blank mounting boards with headings of various countries - Columbia, Panama, Costa Rica, Peru, Galapagos, Guatemala, Ecuador - but all the separation mounting boards are now laid behind the 51 mounted photos, so you'll have to figure out which belong where. There are 10 handmade pockets for the smaller loose photos, each with a handwritten name of a country, e.g. Guatemala, and/or the names of Jack Lamberts and Dan Frost, both of whom were stationed in Panama with Fred Press and WROTE ARTICLES for the Caribbean Breeze. Many of the smaller photos are in the pockets, many are not, and I'm not sure that even those in the pockets are in the correct pocket.

The backs of the mounts of some of the mounted photographs note Fred Press (some seem signed, some simply credit his name), most of the backsides are blank. A couple of the large photos include Fred Press in the image, one with him and a native woman, one with him in a rather absurd looking Mariachi outfit. (Fred Press has a rather unique, unmistakable profile).

The lot also includes: SEVEN ISSUES of THE CARIBBEAN BREEZE, the official publication of the Sixth Air Force, published in PANAMA during WORLD WAR II. Fred Press was first the publication's art editor, then assistant editor and finally its managing editor. He provided the cover art for many of the issues and also wrote articles for the publication. The art and photographs Fred Press provided for the publication were meant to share the culture of the indigenous people of Central America to the soldiers stationed there.

******Fred Press, b.1919 d.2012, was a 20th century American artist known primarily for his mid-century designs that revolutionized the glassware industry, but also for his artworks and sculptures. His parents had emigrated from Russia in the early 1900's and Fred Press was born in Boston.

During the Second World War Fred Press was a member of the Sixth Air Force stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. He rose to the rank of Tech Sergeant. While in Central America he was the Artist, Art Editor, and then Managing Editor of the Caribbean Breeze, the official publication of the Sixth Air Force. Most of the Covers were drawn by Fred Press, based on his photographs of the local peoples. He also wrote articles to accompany his art and photographs, meant to help educate the soldiers about the surrounding area's culture and history. Much of the knowledge gained during this time was used later as subjects for his paintings and sculptures.

Early in the 1950's, Fred Press moved to New York City where for the next three decades, as chief designer and executive Vice President of Rubel and Company, he helped revolutionize the giftware industry of New York's Fifth Avenue. The Museum of Modern Art, NY awarded him a design award for his glassware and his numerous multi-media products.******

FAMILY PHOTO ALBUM with 50 Original b&w Photographs from the 1940s - 1950s. Snapshots of People on Boats and Beaches, and in front of Homes and Buildings. Good background images. Seems to be a Oceanside or Lakeside area. The album has NO HANDWRITTEN INFORMATION, so I have no idea who the people are or where they are. The 50 photographs are mounted with photo corner mounts in a vinyl cover photo album. The snapshots range in size, including their white borders, from 3.5x5" to 3x4" to 2.5x3.5" to a few even smaller. The images in and the style of these b&w photographs appears to date them from the 1940s and 1950s. Condition: Most of the photos are clean, clear, bright and sharp; a few have faded, and a few have some stains. The album is in solid, clean condition.

SIX BLUEPRINTS / DRAWINGS for the REHABILITATION of the PALACE OF FINE ARTS, SAN FRANCISCO. Printed on sheets that are yellow on front and white on back. Each measures 14.5 x 22 inches and states "REDUCED HALF SIZE".

The blueprints were created by: "Architects for the Palace of Fine Arts Historical State Park - WILLIAM GLADSTONE MERCHANT and ASSOCIATES, ARCHITECTS; and WELTON BECKET and ASSOCIATES, ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS; San Francisco, California." The blueprints were part of a "BASE BID". They are undated but circa 1960. (William Gladstone Merchant, the lead architect, died in 1962 while the rehabilitation based on his drawings was underway).

GOOD condition, a couple small edge tears, one blueprint has a vertical center fold, overall the blueprints are solid, bright, clean and clear.

******William Gladstone Merchant, b.1889 d.1962, was a San Francisco architect who worked in the offices of John Galen Howard and Bernard Maybeck until he opened his own firm in San Francisco in 1930, designing a number of commercial buildings in San Francisco. From 1932-1939, he was the consulting architect for the San Francisco Recreation Commission; he was also a member of the Architectural Commission of Golden Gate International Exposition (1939). William G. Merchant & Associates was the successor firm to and inherited the practice of Bernard Maybeck. HARRY CALLAHAN PHOTOGRAPHS illustrating a 1967 HALLMARK CALENDAR. The calendar contains twelve Callahan Photographs, each printed on its own page. Published by Hallmark Cards, Inc., 1967. Metal spiral bound calendar in a card folder. The blank rear cover of the calendar is glued onto the inside rear cover of the folder, as issued. The folder is 10.25x11.75 inches; the calendar is 10x11.5 inches. 26 pages, consisting of an Introduction by Edward Steichen, 12 monthly calendars facing 12 Callahan photographs, and a back page showing small calendars for 1967 and 1968. GOOD condition. The edges of the folder have browned; the folder's front cover is lightly toned, has some creases near the spine, and some light edge wear; the folder's rear cover has shelf wear, some scrapes, light bleed through from the glue that attaches the calendar to the inside of the folder's rear cover, some rust bleed through from the metal spiral of the bound in calendar, and some edge wear. The inner calendar is in Very Good condition, just lightly used, still bright, clean and unmarked. 1967, a great year for Harry Callahan. He made it into a Hallmark Calendar!

JOINT SHOW. Large and Psychedelically Amazing Poster by WES WILSON created for the Joint Show, exhibition that took place at the Moore Gallery, San Francisco, in 1967. The artists in the show were five of the major psychedelic artists of the time, Wes Wilson, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, and Rick Griffin.

Brilliantly colored, ink looks and feels fresh and vibrant, large 25x37.5 inches. Published by [NEON ROSE, San Francisco, 1967], later printing with no statement printed along the bottom edge.

NEAR FINE condition, a touch of edge wear, bright and lovely.

The little fine-printing book is in FINE CONDITION, bright, sharp and clean. The laid-in flyer for the Sue Diridoni / Clifford Burke Poetry Reading has been folded in half, otherwise Very Good.

Accompanying the book is a small flyer announcing: "POETRY / SUE DIRIDONI / CLIFFORD BURKE / INTERSECTION / Dec. 29 - 8 pm".

Susan Diridoni was a psychotherapist and poet. She was well known in the San Francisco Bay Area haiku poetry community. She died on July 30, 2022.

She earned her MFA from University of Wisconsin at Madison and was married to and a collaborator with Walter Samuel Haatoum Hamady. Laird was involved in every stage of the bookmaking process, from soliciting manuscripts to marbling the covers.

Walter Samuel Haatoum Hamady, b.1940 d.2019, was an American artist, book designer, papermaker, poet and teacher. He is especially known for his innovative efforts in letterpress printing, bookbinding, and papermaking. In the mid 1960s, he founded THE PERISHABLE PRESS LIMITED and the SHADWELL PAPERMILL. In 1966 he joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where for over thirty years he taught papermaking, letterpress printing, and bookbinding.

A poster celebrating both CHE GUEVARA, REVOLUTION and the Victory of the VIETNAMESE over their oppressors. The poster is printed in black and red on white paper and shows the face of Che Guevara. It measures 15 x 23 inches (41 x 60 cm). Though neither the Artist, Place, or Date is stated, the poster is known to have been produced by the Inkworks Press in 1977. In fact, you can find the image and date of this poster on the Inkworks Press online archives.

******Jerry Daviee, b.1947 d.2017, began his art studies at the San Francisco Art institute in San Francisco in 1965 and went on to receive an MA in Art History with a focus on contemporary Latin American Art at the University of Texas at Austin.

In 1977 Jerry became Curator of Art at the Amarillo Art Center in Amarillo, Texas. In 1980 Jerry and his wife moved to San Francisco where he assumed the position of Curator of Art for the American Museum Association. He continued his studies, receiving an M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1989. From 1990 to 2007, Jerry Served as the Grants Officer for the Oakland Museum of California.******

CONCIERTO con PEDRO TERAN: INTERPRETADOR de la CANCIÓN REVOLUCIONARIA. SCREENPRINT POSTER, printed on heavy stock paper, 17.5x23 inches (44.5 x 58.5 cm). This poster was obviously printed in support of the Nicaraguan Revolution and the Sandinistas. 1979 was an important year in the NICARAGUAN SANDINISTA REVOLUTION. The Oakland Museum has a copy of this original poster in its poster collection. On the Museum's online site, OCMA, it shows an image of the poster and provides relevant information about it, including the 1979 printing date. No printer information is given. Poster has a black background with white text. In the center is an image of Pedro Teran singing and playing the guitar. The poster reads, "Concierto Beneficio para el Ministerio de Cultura de Nicaragua/ Concierto con Pedro Teran / interpretador de la canción revolucionaria / October 28, 3-7 PM/ $2.50 / St. John Lutheran School / south Van Ness & twenty-first st. / San Francisco / Tambien: Musica de Los Peludos, Tardeada, Comida y Bebidas". PHOTO ALBUM / SCRAPBOOK, filled with color snapshots, some booklets and other paper ephemera from a 1987 trip, likely by a U.S. Slavic Church group, to Yugoslavia. There are 26 leaves (52 pages) in the album, with photos (and some paper ephemera) pasted onto both sides of the leaves. Most pages have 3 or more 3.5x4.5 inch snapshots, some have booklets or other paper ephemera. There are a total of 115 snapshots. The first 21 photos are of the church group at a Pope's mass at an outdoor stadium somewhere. The photos are of the the crowds at the stadium mass, members of the church group, and other scenes at the stadium. Next comes a large photo postcard of Zagreb captioned with a handwritten note stating "Zagreb / First city for us in Yugoslavia". Then begins a large section of photos and some ephemera related to the group's visit to Medjugorje. Their stay in Medjugorje seems to have been the main purpose of the trip. There are 45 snapshots and several pieces of paper ephemera. The snapshots are accompanied by the following handwritten notes: ******Our group and first views of Medjugorje; Family dinner at Medjugorje, three Fathers one Sister, Jesusa and her Mother; Medjugorje Parish Church, Father McDonald of our group from San Francisco and others behind organ and beneath choir left of Apparitions; Chinese Mass in Apparition Room at Church with Mary giving the Hail Mary; VISITING THE VISIONARIES VICKA AND MARIJA AT THEIR HOMES; Andrej Subie took us to visit. He is translating for Vicka and Marija; Our host family and our home in Medjugorje.****** Next come snapshots of the group in Dubrovnik, with scenes of Dubrovnik including ancient sites and modern tourist beaches. Then some photos of Mostar, more pictures of the group, a photo card of a bush with a miraculous appearance of the Virgin Mary which "was shown to the children in Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, and it was confirmed as true". Then a few photos of buildings on Lopud Island. Quite an interesting album, especially so since the snapshots were taken in 1987, only a few years before the Yugoslavian Civil War (the Yugoslav War) which began in 1991 and devastated the former Yugoslavia for the next ten years. Condition: The album is sturdy, the photos are bright and clear, the photos and ephemera are glued on to the album pages and cannot be removed, the thin plastic covering to the album pages is sometimes torn or missing but that does not affect the items on the album pages. ORIGINAL DRAFT FILM SCREENPLAY of THICK AS THIEVES, a 1998 film starring ALEC BALDWIN, Andre Braugher, Rebecca De Mornay, Julia Sweeney, and Janeane Garofalo.

Award Winning MAKE-UP ARTIST ALLAN APONE'S PERSONAL WORKING COPY, with his name at the top of the title page. Allan Apone was the HEAD OF THE MAKEUP DEPARTMENT for the film.

What makes Allan Apone's copy especially rare and wonderful is that it is filled with 105 unique color photographs of the stars, including many of a 1998 Alec Baldwin. The photos are tipped-on to the blank backsides of many pages of the script, facing pages in which the stars have a scene requiring special makeup. The photographs show the stars in various poses, mostly without make-up (a few with some trial blood and wounds), mostly in what appear to be their home or yard settings, in poses and with facial expressions probably called for by Apone in order to help him decide how to make them up for various scenes (what scar goes where, what blood should cover that nice shirt, how should that face look when struck by a bullet, how old should I make that face look, etc.) The photographs are mostly 3x5 inch, all in color, all unique.

A true working copy. There is green highlighting throughout, and blue lines highlighting scenes requiring makeup: "Blood is on his right hand and the right sleeve of his jacket. He takes off the jacket, turns it inside out, uses it to wipe his hand clean." There are also a couple notes written in the margin regarding makeup: "Muscle bleeds from right side corner of mouth down chin".,

The script is a revised draft dated March 25, 1998, with multi-colored revision pages (blue, pink, and yellow) dated to April 13, 1998. There are 113 8.5x11 inch pages, various colors, .photocopied on one side only, 3-hole punched in the left margin, bound with 2 brass brads. The script was written by Scott Sanders & Arthur Krystal, based on the novel by Patrick Quinn. It was directed by Scott Sanders.

GOOD Condition: The script shows general signs of handling and use (it's a working copy after all) with some creases and a bit of soiling here and there; the title page has torn from the brass brads and is laid on loosely, it has tearing and creases around its upper and lower holes, and some edge wear and corner creases; otherwise a complete, bright, clean and clear copy. The photographs are all very bright and sharp, a couple are creased where the script folded on them incorrectly.
