CONDITION: The vellum covers are soiled, darkened, rubbed, missing a half-dollar size piece at the upper rear corner, and well creased (as normal for limp vellum); nonetheless the vellum covers remain quite lovely in a Harry Potter Hogwarts' Library way. Internally, the front and rear inner hinges are split but holding with the cord binding; the bottom half of the last two leaves (pages 609/610 and 611/612) is roughly torn off; the rear free endpaper is lacking, and the rear pastedown is mostly lacking; there is chipping to the bottom corner of the first few pages, not affecting text; light foxing and some age spotting here and there throughout; otherwise the inner pages are nice, complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

The Original Limp Vellum Binding makes this an especially attractive copy of this rare book.

THE LOG OF THE SNARK, by CHARMIAN LONDON (wife of JACK LONDON).

NEW YORK: the Macmillan Company, 1915. First Edition. In professionally rebound covers.

FULL PAGE INSCRIPTION by CHARMIAN LONDON to MARIAN (CUNHA, nee STERLING), sister of the poet GEORGE STERLING, JACK LONDON'S CLOSE FRIEND.

"Here it is at last / my happy, only, book / and who should have a / copy more than you / who knew me so long before the Snark, and have / known me so long after- / word - Jack and me! / With all best remembrances / Affectionately yours, / Charmian / Honolulu, T. H. / March 22, 1916".

Note that the inscription, dated March 22, 1916, was written while Jack London was still alive, dying just eight months later on Nov. 22, 1916. Also note that Charmian wrote: "Jack and me!". Both Jack and Charmian were close friends of George Sterling and, by association, Sterling's sister Marian (Sterling) Cunha.

Provenance: COPY OF CECILY CUNHA, daughter of MARIAN STERLING CUNHA, with her bookplate on the front pastedown. Likely rebound by Cecily Cunha in the 1960s or 1970s after the book was passed down from her mother.

Hardcover Book, professionally and attractively rebound in brown pebbled cloth covered boards, 4 raised spine bands, gilt titling to the spine, 5.5x7.5 inches, 487 pages plus 5 pages of Publisher's ads at the rear. Illustrated with 20 photographic plates, including the frontispiece photo.

VERY GOOD condition, the rebound covers are FINE, the inner pages are lightly age toned, the title page has two small pieces of the frontispiece photo attached to it that apparently were pulled by the title page from the frontispiece at some point, there is some light foxing on the pages facing the plates, the plates have some wear to their edges as normal, a result of overhanging the text block just a bit; the plate facing page 250 has more substantial edgewear than the others, including some closed tears, but not affecting the images; otherwise tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid, attractive, very presentable copy.

With the inscription and the association to George Sterling, the Sterling Family, the Cunha family, Hawaii, Swimming, Surfing, and the Pacific Ocean that Jack London so loved, this book is a UNIQUE TREASURE.

    About CHARMIAN LONDON (from Wikipedia):

******Charmian Kittredge London, b.1871 d.1955, was Jack London's second wife. He divorced Bess Maddern London in 1904 and married Charmian Kittredge the next year. Biographer Russ Kingman called Charmian "Jack's soulmate, always at his side, and a perfect match."******

About GEORGE STERLING, brother of MARIAN STERLING CUNHA (from Wikipedia and The Poetry Foundation website):

In 1905 Sterling moved to Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, where he established a colony for like minded Bohemian writers. Despite his marriages and numerous affairs, Sterling was closest to Jack London and many consider Sterling London's best friend.******

About MARIAN STERLING and CLARENCE CUNHA (from The San Francisco Call, Sunday, August 26, 1906, page 38):

******MISS MARIAN STERLING and CLARENCE C. CUNHA were married this morning at 8 o'clock in St. Francis de Sales Church...Cunha is the son of a wealthy sugar planter of the Sandwich Islands...His bride is a SISTER of GEORGE STERLING, the poet...******

Condition: GOOD book, the covers have some rubs to the black paper, leaving it a bit white in some areas; there is some wear / bumps to the spine ends and to the covers' edges; internally very nice, still tight, bright, clean and unmarked; in a VERY GOOD dustjacket with some light edge and spine-end wear. Note: This Book was published as part of a 4 Volume Set, with each volume focused on a different area. Each volume is almost always sold individually, as each stands on its own. Sometimes a title makes it seem like a 4 Volume Set is being offered, but read the description closely and you will find that it is almost invariably a Single Volume of the 4 Volume Set.
