Internally, the front and rear inner hinges are split but holding with the cord binding; the bottom half of the last two leaves (pages 609/610 and 611/612) is roughly torn off; the rear free endpaper is lacking, and the rear pastedown is mostly lacking; there is chipping to the bottom corner of the first few pages, not affecting text; light foxing and some age spotting here and there throughout; otherwise the inner pages are nice, complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

Y de los Visitadores y modo como se han de portar en las visitas de los Indios y sus Doctrineros. De la conciencia errónea muy ordinaria en los Indios, y de algunas cuestiones misceláneas.

The Original Limp Vellum Binding makes this an especially attractive copy of this rare book.

Internally, there are corner creases, some corner tears, some spotting here and there, a few pages with light edge stains, a bit of foxing here and there, some page toning, splits between some signatures (always still holding well with the sewn binding); but overall the inner pages are incredibly well-kept, still complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. I found this blurb about Davidson in a 1900 issue of The Independent: "Mr. John Russell Davidson lately of Harper & Brothers has opened The Authors Agency in New York City for the placing of manuscripts. Mr. Davidson has references from some of the best known literary people in this country." Hardcover book, gilt titling and silver design on the front cover and spine, no dustjacket as issued, 5x7.5 inches. Illustrated with 60+ drawings, photographs, portraits, and maps. A solid, lovely copy. About FRANZ WILHELM JUNGHUHN (from Wikipedia): ******Friedrich Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn (1809-1864), was a German-Dutch Botanist and Geologist. Junghuhn settled on Java, where he made an extensive study of the land and its people. He discovered the Kawah Putih crater lake south of Bandung in 1837. He published extensively on his many adventurous expeditions and his scientific analyses. Among his works is an important description and natural history in many volumes of the volcanoes of Java, BIJDRAGEN TOT DE GESCHIEDENIS DER VULKANEN IN DEN INDISCHEN ARCHIPEL (1843). He completed DIE TOPOGRAPHISCHEN UND NATURWISSENSCHAFTLICHEN REISEN DURCH JAVA (TOPOGRAPHIC AND SCIENTIFIC JOURNEYS IN JAVA) in 1845 and a first anthropological and topographical study of Sumatra, DIE BÄTTALANDER AUF SUMATRA (BATAK LANDS OF SUMATRA). in 1847. In 1849, ill health forced his return to the Netherlands, where he married Johanna Louisa Frederika Koch on January 23, 1850, and had a son. While in the Netherlands, Junghuhn began work on a four volume treatise published in Dutch and translated into German between 1850 and 1854: JAVA, DESZELFS GEDAANTE, BEKLEEDING EN INWENDIGE STRUKTUUR (in German: JAVA, SEINE GESTALT, PFLANZENDECKE, UND SEIN INNERER BAU). Junghuhn was an avid humanist and socialist. In the Netherlands he published anonymously his free thinking manifesto LICHT EN SCHADUWBEELDEN UIT DE BINNENLANDEN VAN JAVA (IMAGES OF LIGHT AND SHADOW FROM JAVA'S INTERIOR) between 1853 and 1855. The work was controversial, advocating socialism in the colonies and fiercely criticizing Christian and Islamic proselytization of the Javanese people. Junghuhn instead wrote of his preference for a form of Pandeism (pantheistic deism), contending that God was in everything, but could only be determined through reason. The work was banned in Austria and parts of Germany for its denigrations and vilifications of Christianity, but was a strong seller in the Netherlands where it was first published pseudonymously. Junghuhn returned to Java in 1855 and remained there until his death from liver disease in 1864.******

by Ertl is in German and is 4 lines long. I cannot read his handwriting. Ertl's SIGNATURE is beneath his inscription, and beneath the inscription Ertl has added the date 14.1.55 (January 14, 1955). Hardcover book in dustjacket, 6x8 inches, 263 pages plus some unnumbered photographic plates here and there throughout. Published by Nymphenburger, Munich, Germany, 1952. Fourth edition. Condition: FAIR book, the covers have light foxing and a bit of bubbling to the cloth covered boards, there is foxing to the page edges (edges of the closed book), foxing to the endpapers, soiling and some staining to the rear endpapers, foxing to the pages that face the photographic plates, toning to all the pages (as normal), still a solid, tightly bound copy with text that is clear and fully legible and photographic plates that are sharp and bright; in an only FAIR dustjacket that has chips and wear along its edges, corners and spine ends, a few 1 inch tears, scraping at the folds, and some soiling; nonetheless the dj is still doing its job. A rare SIGNATURE and INSCRIPTION by HANS ERTL just before he left Germany for Bolivia, where he spent the rest of his days. About HANS ERTL, Mountaineer, Nazi Cinematographer, Bolivian Refugee, Filmmaker (from Wikipedia): ******Hans Ertl (b. 1908 in Munich, Germany, d. 2000 in Chiquitania, Bolivia) was a German, and later Bolivian, mountaineer and cinematographer. In the 1930s he was the first man to ascend a number of notable mountain peaks. He was a cameraman and filmmaker during the Nazi era. He worked with Leni Riefenstahl on several of her Nazi propaganda films as well as on her Olympia film. During World War II he was among the preferred cameramen accompanying General Rommel which earned him a reputation as "Rommel's Photographer". In the mid 1950s he left Germany and resettled in Bolivia where he made two feature length documentaries of his Bolivian mountaineering expeditions. He embarked on a third filming expedition, but ceased after his tractor crashed through a wooden bridge with two thirds of the exposed footage on board. Frustrated he then decided to become a farmer and retired to a piece of semi-jungle land in Eastern Bolivia. Ertl was the father of the Bolivian Revolutionary Guerrilla Fighter MONIKA ERTL, he was also an acquaintance of KLAUS BARBIE and, reportedly a lover of LENI RIEFENSTAHL. He rarely returned to Germany where he felt cheated out of an important film award, but days before his death he asked his daughter in Bavaria to send him a bag of German soil. Ertl died in 2000 and he was buried on his farm which is now a museum.******
