AT WASANAETH MERCHED A GWRAGEDD CYMRU. The periodical was edited by CRANOGWEN, the pseudonym of Sarah Jane Rees. VOLUME VI (CYF. VI). One volume only. Perhaps a bound collection was published at the end of every year of the publication, I do not know. TEXT in WELSH. LLANELLI: Argraffwyd A Chyhoeddwyd Gan D. Williams A'I Fab., 1884. First Edition of Volume VI. Hardcovers, leather covered spine and corners with pebbled cloth covered boards, 5.5x7.5 inches, 384 pages. Illustrated with drawings and fancy title letters. Y FRYTHONES was a monthly Welsh language periodical for women, with much of the contents written by women of Wales. The contents were religious, literary, and general in nature, including articles on religion, raising children, the family, and the home, as well as poetry, music, games and biographies of prominent women. All was in Welsh. The periodical was edited by the teacher, poet, and unconventional woman, Sarah Jane Rees. The periodical was founded in 1874 and ended publication in 1891. It was created to continue the work of the Welsh women's periodical Y GYMRAES which was published for only two years, 1850 and 1851. Y GYMRAES was created in response to a government report which had strongly criticized the lax morals of Welsh women. Both Y GYMRAES and then Y FRYTHONES set out to promote higher intellectual and moral standards for women in Wales. Previously owned by KATIE HUMPHREYS, with her bookplate on the front free endpaper, and by ROBERT OWEN, with his small ink stamped name on the front free endpaper and title page. At the bottom of the front pastedown is a small label of A. BROMLEY / Printer, Lithographer, Bookbinder, &c / High Street / BANGOR (WALES). It appears likely that KATIE HUMPHREYS and ROBERT OWEN were both from Bangor Wales, as both names show up prominently there. GOOD CONDITION: the leather spine covering is scraped and rubbed, and the leather corners are rubbed at their edges; the pebbled cloth covered boards have a few smudges; otherwise the coverts remain solid and are doing their job well; internally there is a bit of foxing and some creases here and there, else the pages are tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid, nice copy. About CRAGOGWEN, pseudonym of SARAH JANE REES (from Wikipedia): ******Sarah Jane Rees, b.1839 d.1916, also known as CRANOGWEN, was a Welsh poet, editor, teacher, temperance campaigner, and proto-suffragette. She had two long lesbian relationships. Sarah Jane Rees was born at Llangrannog in Cardiganshire, the daughter of a mariner John Rees. She was a precocious child and insisted that she accompany her father to sea rather than undertake sewing and cooking chores. She attended school in both Cardigan and New Quay, and for a time studied at a navigation school in London, where she gained her master's certificate, a qualification allowing her to command a ship in any part of the world. In 1859 Sarah Jane set up her own navigation school in her home village of Llangrannog. In addition to teaching navigation and other subjects, she became editor of the Welsh language women's periodical Y Frythones (1878 to 1889), a platform for Welsh bluestockings and proto-suffragettes. Rees had two significant same-sex relationships. Her first was with Fanny Rees, a milliner's daughter from Troedyraur, near LLangrannog. Fanny contracted tuberculosis and returned to Wales around 1874 to die. She moved into Rees' home rather than that of her family, and died in her arms. Rees commemorated Fanny in one of her best-known poems, Fy Ffrynd (My Friend). Her second relationship was with Jane Thomas, with whom she spent most of her life. Open about her unconventional domestic arrangement, Rees was nonetheless a committed Methodist.******

FAIR condition: the covers are spotted, worn through at the corners and along much of their edges and spine folds, but are original and still doing their job; internally, previous owner's signature (Virginia Sherman) on the front pastedown, lacking the frontispiece but the other 15 called for plates are all present, foxing to the endpapers otherwise just a sprinkling here and there, there is a 1 inch closed tear to the bottom edge of the front free endpaper and a 1 inch closed tear and associated crease to front edge of the title page, a couple pages are dog-eared; overall the inner pages remain tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid copy with original but flawed covers of this early, rare, woman's novel concerning civil rights for African-Americans.

FREE AT LAST is one of the first published books whose title is those famous words "free at last", words which came from a spiritual and which later became a sort of anthem for Martin Luther King, Jr. during his speeches and rallies. The novel illustrates the need for Black civil rights, shows the injustices caused by Jim Crow laws, and calls for African-American temperance. The novel's protagonist is the son of slaves. He insists on being admitted to the White House to meet the President.

The author Mrs. Jane S. Collins was a civil rights activist and temperance crusader. She and her group of women followers would sit in saloons and refuse to leave until arrested and taken away by police. A form of passive resistance that was used by many movements to follow.

A historically important book written by a white American woman during the Jim Crow era.

Published by the HAHNEMANN PUBLISHING HOUSE, Philadelphia, [1887]. Though the copyright is 1875, the Publisher's catalogue bound in at the rear is for titles published in 1887, which dates this Fifth American Edition as 1887.

Hardcover book, cloth covered boards, gilt titling and designs to the spine, 6.5x9 inches. Pagination: xix, [17]-244, plus a 16 page "New Catalogue" for Homoeopathic Publications for the year 1887 by Hahnemann Publishing House / F. E. Boericke's.

VERY GOOD condition, light wear and some light spots to the covers, the front inner hinge is cracked but holding well, otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

About AUGUSTINE CHRISTINE HAUB (from Woman's Medical Journal - A Monthly Journal Published in the Interests of Women Physicians, August, 1914):

******Dr Augustine Catherine Haub died November 13, 1913, at her place of residence on Beacon Street in Boston after a painful illness of nine months. She was 33. She was born in Gold Hill, Nevada, September 19, 1870. She graduated from Boston University Medical School in 1893. She served as an intern [at the Massachusetts Homeopathic Hospital, Boston] the year after her graduation and showed a marked aptitude for surgical work. Her faithfulness to high ideals in her professional work gained for her a devoted clientele. She was fortunately the recipient of a considerable legacy from one of her patients in acknowledgment for unremitting devotion. Her parents are both living in Santa Rosa California.******

Dr. Horace Packard, a noted homeopathic surgeon, gave an acknowledgement to Dr. Haub in his 1906 book on homeopathic surgery FIVE YEARS' WORK IN SURGERY: "Grateful acknowledgement is herewith expressed for laborious work in surgical tabulating by Dr. Augustine C. Haub..."

DULCE COR: Being the POEMS of FORD BERÊTON (pseudonym of SAMUEL RUTHERFORD CROCKETT). LONDON: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., MDCCCLXXXVI (1886). First Edition. Hardcovers, olive green cloth covered boards lettered in gilt on the front cover and spine, 5x7.5 inches. Pagination: xii, 200 pages. Frontispiece portrait and one plate, both with their tissue guards. This is the FIRST BOOK by the SCOTTISH writer S.R. CROCKETT, b. 1860 d. 1914. It is a collection of poetry written under the pseudonym FORD BERÊTON. The book was published the year Crockett was ordained into the Church of Scotland. It would be seven years later, and after resigning his ministry, that Crockett would begin publishing his famous SCOTTISH STORIES, beginning with his successful THE STICKIT MINISTER. This copy has an IMPORTANT SCOTTISH LITERARY ASSOCIATION, with the penciled ownership SIGNATURE and handwritten ADDRESS of Scottish writer WILLIAM SHARP on the half title page. William Sharp wrote under his name and under the pseudonym of FIONA MACLEOD. He was a contemporary of Samuel Crockett. He was also a contemporary of William Butler Yeats who reportedly liked the writing of Fiona Macleod but not the writing of William Sharp. There is a lovely pictorial bookplate of Albert Harrison on the front pastedown. I have no idea who he might be. VERY GOOD condition, the covers have some wear and rubbing to the spine ends and corner tips, there is foxing here and there, most noticeable on the first and last few pages, the leaf consisting of pages 95/96 is missing its upper corner (probably from being roughly cut open), not affecting text; otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. The penciled signature and handwritten address of William Sharp are clear and legible. About S.R. CROCKETT (from Wikipedia): ******Samuel Rutherford Crockett, b.1859 d.1914, who published under the name S. R. CROCKETT, was a Scottish novelist. After some years of travel, he became in 1886 an Ordained Minister of Penicuik. During the same year as his ordination, his first book, Dulce Cor (Latin: Sweet Heart), a collection of verse under the pseudonym Ford Brereton, was published. That was the only book he published until he abandoned the ministry to become a writer. The success of J. M. Barrie and the Kailyard school of sentimental, homey writing had already created a demand for stories in Lowland Scots, when Crockett published his successful story of The Stickit Minister in 1893. It was followed by a rapidly produced series of popular novels frequently featuring the history of Scotland or his native Galloway. Crockett made considerable sums of money from his writing and was a friend and correspondent of R. L. Stevenson. A substantial number of his works have been republished since the 100th anniversary of his death.****** About WILLIAM SHARP / FIONA MACLEOD (from Wikipedia): ******William Sharp, b.1855 d.1905, was a Scottish writer, of poetry and literary biography in particular, who from 1893 wrote also as Fiona Macleod, a pseudonym kept almost completely secret during his lifetime. Sharp's poem THE LONELY HUNTER inspired the title of Carson McCullers debut novel THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER. His poem contains the lines "Deep in the heart of Summer, sweet is life to me still, But my heart is a lonely hunter, that hunts on a lonely hill". In Disney's 2017 movie production of Beauty and the Beast, Belle recites to the Beast several lines of Sharp's poem A Crystal Forest: "Each branch, each twig, each blade of grass, / Seems clad miraculously with glass".******

The photographic image is 9.75 x 12.75 inches, mounted on a 11x13.75 inch stiff card mount. Fourteen women are in the photograph, eight of them are named on the backside of the mount. The mount has two holes at the top and one on the bottom, perhaps for hanging with a cord. Printed on the bottom left side is: "G. Waldon Smith", and on the bottom right side is: "Boston, Portland & Old Orchard".

The image is in VERY GOOD condition, some light shorelining to the upper left corner area, overall bright and clear, lovely. The mount is GOOD, with wear at its corners and edges. The mount is slightly bowed.

A previous owner wrote on the backside in pencil "Smith College / circa 1888", but the only woman that I investigated who had a degree mentioned was "Clara Elise von Wettberg" who graduated from Wellesley in 1879. Maybe she then went to Smith College? A couple of the other women whose names I looked into indicated that the date "circa 1888" is probably correct. "Jessie Estelle Kline" was born in 1870 and was married in 1900. Frances Marie Barker married Harvard graduate Hugh Means in 1901, they both were from and returned to Lawrence, Kansas. Miss Margaret Dale Harrison of Philadelphia was listed in the 1898 Philadelphia Blue Book, and she was married in 1899. I could not find another college mentioned, but then again these women had very little mentioned online that I could find, other than the MEN they married. Hmmm.

Whether Smith College or Wellesley, this c.1888 photograph of 14 well heeled college girls is quite a treasure.

Printed by Blochmann und Sohn, Dresden, Germany. Undated but circa 1890. A separately printed reprint from the journal Leopoldina, Volume XXVI, Number 3-4, 1890. THREE PAGES on TWO LEAVES. Text in German. POOR condition. The single fold sheet (to make 4 pages) has split down the fold so that there are now 2 separate leaves. The pages have a horizontal fold across the center. The first page has tape reinforcement / repair across its horizontal folds; the tape has darkened making the words beneath the tape difficult to read (the words can all still be read upon close examination). The blank last page also has tape reinforcement / repair across its horizontal fold. There is edge wear including chips, tears and corner creases; 4 of the tears are 1 inch. There is foxing overall. Scarce. OCLC shows only 4 copies of this 3 page document printed by Blochmann. The copies are held at the University of Bern, the University of Strasbourg, the Museum of Natural Science in Trento Italy, and the LuEsther T. Mertz Library at the New York Botanical Garden.

******Sophia Elizabeth Reed (née Armstrong), b.1842 d,1915, was an American Oriental scholar and author whose books were widely used as college textbooks in universities worldwide for Oriental studies. Hers were, at the time, the only works by a woman accepted by the Philosophical Society of Great Britain.

In 1893, she was chairman of the Woman's Congress of Philology at Chicago and in 1896 became an editor of the Course of Universal Literature. Reed served two terms as the president of the Illinois Woman's Press Association. She received honorary degrees from Northwestern University, Wesleyan University,and Bethany College.

She was the mother of author Myrtle Reed, and two sons, Earl Howell and Charles B. Reed.******

Copy of HENRY N. CASTLE, with his SIGNATURE on the title-page. Henry N. Castle was an important figure in the overthrow of Queen Lilinokalani and the formation of the New Republic of Hawaii. He was owner of The Honolulu Advertiser, the oldest and most influential paper in Hawaii. HIS BROTHER WILLIAM R. CASTLE was a WRITER and SIGNER of the 1893 DRAFT ANNEXATION TREATY. He is referenced in a number of places in this book

In 1895 while returning to Hawaii to support the Islands' revolutionaries he and his four year-old daughter were on the ship Elbe which crashed and sank. They both drowned. His wife and infant daughter, Elinor, were not on the ship.

Subsequent to the death of Henry N. Castle, his wife, MABEL WING CASTLE, SIGNED and INSCRIBED this book to his daughter, ELINOR CASTLE NEF. The book is inscribed on the front free-endpaper: "To Elinor Castle Nef / Henry Castle's daughter / M.W.C. [Mabel Wing Castle]".

Subsequent to that the book was donated to the University of Chicago by Elinor Castle Nef and her husband John U. Nef. There is a University of Chicago bookplate on the front pastedown with the following printed information: "FROM the LIBRARY of / ELINOR CASTLE NEF / and / JOHN U. NEF".

Also, on the verso of the title page, is the printed statement: "Gift of / John U. Nef".

Contains two important Senate reports from the 52nd Congress, 2nd Session, relating to the Annexation of Hawaii.

The first report is subtitled: "A treaty of annexation concluded on the 14th day of February 1893, between the United States and the Provisional Government of the Hawaiian Islands". Dated February 15, 1893. 69 pages.

The report begins: "To the Senate / I transmit, herewith, with a view to its ratification, a treaty of annexation concluded on the 14th day of February, 1893, between Hon. John W. Foster, Secretary of State...and Lorrin A. Thurston, W. R. CASTLE, W. C. Wilder, C. L. Carter, and Joseph Marsden, the commissioners on part of the Provisional Government of the Hawaiian Islands." The introductory remarks are followed by the FULL DRAFT ANNEXATION TREATY.

The second report is subtitled: "Correspondence respecting relations between the United States and the Hawaiian Islands from September, 1820 to January, 1893". Dated February 17, 1893. 192 pages.

Condition: The covers are well-worn, the front and rear boards are disbound (i.e. laid on loosely), worn through at the corners and edges, scraped, and the leather is chipping and peeling at places; the spine covering is chipped at the ends, scraped, and has a horizontal split; nonetheless the covers and spine covering are present and bright, and certainly worthy of rebacking / repair. EX-LIBRARY, deaccessioned from the University of Chicago Library (which holds the archives of Henry N. Castle), with a library bookplate on the front pastedown (as noted above) and a library stamp on the verso of the title page, both over-stamped WITHDRAWN; the front free endpaper (with the presentation inscription from Mrs. Castle to Elinor Castle Nef) is split for 3 inches at its gutter edge and is very tender but holding; the second report has margin marks and a bit of underlining here and there throughout noting passages, perhaps made by Henry N. Castle; the pages are lightly age toned, there is some edge wear here and there, overall the inner pages remain bright, clean, clear and fully legible. A complete copy deserving of rebinding.

Two Large Format Sales Agent's Policy Kits / Books, with receipts for policies sold and with information for the agent regarding pricing and issuing policies. Hartford Fire Insurance, 1895 and 1896. The sales agent that owned these policy portfolios was a woman, Abby C. Sturgeon of Newman, Stanislaus County, California. Her territory, deduced from the bound in written policies, was apparently Stanislaus and Merced Counties, California, including Modesto and surrounding areas. The two portfolio type kits / books measure 12.5 x 18 inches. They open to show Hartford Company Rules for Agents pasted on the inside front and rear covers. Also bound inside the portfolios are the stubs for policies that have been issued and full policy issuing sheets. One of the portfolios has 12 stubs that are filled in with names and other relevant issuing information. This portfolio has no blank policy forms remaining to be used. The other portfolio has 5 stubs with filled in info and has 14 policy sheets that remain unused, unissued. The two portfolio policy books are only in FAIR condition, the covers are soiled, have stains and sunning, and are shaky; internally some of the items tipped onto the inside covers are creased and wrinkled. Nonetheless these vintage insurance items are original and all the printing and handwriting is clear and legible. Some interesting genealogy from 19th Century Stanislaus County and Merced County, California. Interesting also is that this 1895 insurance sales agent of farm policies was a woman. In the book Lady Bell instructs how to play the game of Conversation as a Chess Game. Like chess, the conversationalists play either Black or White, making "moves" meant to win the game of conversation at evening gatherings. In the book, women play White and men play Black.

From the book: "I have adopted the phraseology of a Handbook to Chess as being most suitable for my purpose. By Player is meant the interlocutor, and for further convenience I shall designate the male interlocutor as Black, and the female as White...these being the prevalent hues of male and female costume at evening gatherings, where conversation runs the highest..."

Lady Bell was born in Paris, France in 1851, the youngest of four children of Irish born Joseph Francis Olliffe (later Sir Joseph Olliffe) and Laura Cubitt. She was the second wife of Sir Hugh Bell, 2nd Baronet, of Rounton Grange, and therefore became Lady Bell.

Lady Bell was the stepmother to her husband's children from his first marriage: British explorer and key political figure in the Middle East, Gertrude Bell, b.1868 d.1926, and Maurice, 3rd Baronet, b.1871 d.1944.

In 1918 she was appointed as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). She died on 16 May 1930 at her home, 95 Sloane Street, Chelsea.******

Internally, there are a couple edge chips here and there, the upper hinge is splitting for an inch or so at a few places, overall the inner pages are very nice, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. About FELIX MARCHAND (from Wikipedia): ****** Felix Jacob Marchand (22 October 1846 - 4 February 1928) was a German Pathologist born in Halle an der Saale. He studied medicine in Berlin, and later became an assistant at the Pathological Institute in Halle. In 1881 he became a Professor of Pathological Anatomy in Giessen, and two years later garnered the same position at Marburg. In 1900 he succeeded Pathologist Felix Victor Birch-Hirschfeld (1842-1899) at the University of Leipzig. In 1904 Marchand was credited with coining the term Atherosclerosis from the Greek "athero", meaning gruel, and "sclerosis", meaning hardening, to describe the fatty substance inside a hardened artery. DEACCESSION / PROVENANCE NOTE: There is a stamp at the bottom of the library bookplate that reads: "PSR / Released 2013". It is interesting to note that in the year 2000 the Pacific School of Religion founded an institute devoted exclusively to the study of Pacific Asian religion (the PANA Institute). The university acquired a number of important and scarce books for the institute. However, PANA was placed on indefinite hiatus (i.e. shut down) in 2009 due to budgetary concerns, and many of its rare books were deaccessioned.

******Count Alessandro di Cagliostro, b.1743 d.1795, was the alias of the occultist Giuseppe Balsamo (Joseph Balsamo).

Cagliostro was an Italian adventurer and self-styled magician. He became a glamorous figure associated with the royal courts of Europe where he pursued various occult arts, including psychic healing, alchemy and scrying. His reputation lingered for many decades after his death, but continued to deteriorate, as he came to be regarded as a charlatan and impostor, this view fortified by the savage attack of Thomas Carlyle in 1833, who pronounced him the Quack of Quacks. W.R.H. Trowbridge in his Cagliostro: the Splendour and Misery of a Master of Magic (1910), attempted a rehabilitation.

Portuguese author Camilo Castelo Branco credits to Balsamo the creation of the Egyptian Rite of the Freemasons and intensive work in the diffusion of Freemasonry, by opening lodges all over Europe and by introducing the acceptance of women into the community. Occult historian Lewis Spence comments in his entry on Cagliostro that the swindler put his finagled wealth to good use by starting and funding a chain of maternity hospitals and orphanages around the continent. Occultist Aleister Crowley believed Cagliostro was one of his previous incarnations.******
