The years 1861 to February 1863 are the papers most important years, as those were both CIVIL WAR YEARS and the only 2 years that the paper was edited by HENRY WARD BEECHER. The paper was strongly ANTI-SLAVERY and as such was strongly PRO-UNION during the CIVIL WAR. This particular issue transcribes a LONG SERMON by Henry Ward Beecher (brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe), and has many articles regarding various Civil War battles. The paper will be sent folded, as was its normal state. About THE INDEPENDENT, NEW YORK (excerpted from Wikipedia): ******The Independent was a weekly newspaper

published in New York City between 1848 and 1928. It was founded in order to promote Congregationalism and was also an important voice in support of abolitionism and women's suffrage. From its founding in 1848 until 1861 The Independent was edited by a team of three prominent Congregational ministers: Joseph Parrish Thompson, Richard Salter Storrs, and Leonard Bacon. It was published and financed by a group of New York businessmen led by Henry C. Bowen of the silk wholesaling firm Bowen & McNamee. The editorial policy was strongly antislavery, which hurt the magazine's circulation initially, but it improved through the 1850s to reach 35,000 by the beginning of the American Civil War. In 1861 HENRY WARD BEECHER, who had been a regular contributor to the magazine, became its editor. His assistant editor, Theodore Tilton, succeeded Beecher as editor in February 1863.******

Printed by Miles and Dillingham, Cambridge, MA, 1862. First Edition. Hardbound in Publisher's original blindstamped brown cloth with embossed gilt title on front cover, 108 pages, appendix. GOOD Condition: covers corners and edges are worn through, spine covering perished, but the gilt remains bright, internally, front hinge starting and rear hinge tender but holding, period penned "No. 25 - " at the top of the front pastedown and half title, small Los Angeles bookseller label on rear pastedown, and a touch of of age toning, otherwise the inner pages are excellent, tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

This uncommon first hand account provides a wonderful narrative of gold mining in El Dorado County by an original Forty-Niner who prospected in the gold country for twelve years. In addition to Patterson's own experiences, much of this book is devoted to the discovery of gold, the gold region, its geology, advice to new miners, and the weather in 1853. Wheat declares the account "observations of permanent import, the value of which is belatedly becoming recognized." Wheat Books 154.

Patterson left Boston for California via New York on February 5, 1849. He took the schooner Col. Fanning to Brazos Santiago, Mexico. From there, the Argonaut crossed Mexico to Mazatlán arriving on April 17, and then shipped to San Francisco via San Diego. In his introduction, Patterson furnished the following from the San Francisco Alta California: "He arrived in this city on the 20th of July, 1849; started for the mines six days later; went to Mormon Island, and after a short stay, to the vicinity of Georgetown, El Dorado County, where he remained twelve years, never abandoning mining in all that time. He is one of the few Forty-niners who have remained faithful to the business of mining."

Pagination: lvi, 427; xv, 560; xxiii, 681, respectively. Reverend Father Anthony Cogan was a priest and scholar of the Diocese of Meath, Ireland. His three volume diocesan history made use of the incredible Meath archives, including many manuscripts from the early 17th century. Unfortunately, MUCH of the ARCHIVAL MATERIAL used in the work WAS DESTROYED in the MEATH PUBLIC RECORDS FIRE of 1922. Condition: VOLUME I is in GOOD condition, the covers show some rubbing and the gilt lettering on the spine has faded

    away, but the covers remain sturdy and attractive; internally there is the stamp of ST. TERESA'S COLLEGE / GEORGE'S HILL / DUBLIN on the front free endpaper, and a label that reads: LORETTO HOUSE, NAVAN, on the front pastedown;

there is a number written on the front free endpaper; there is a spot or two here and there; overall tight, bright, clean and unmarked. VOLUME II is in FAIR condition, the spine covering is worn and weary, it has been amateurishly glued tight to the spine text block causing it to be flat rather than curved at the spine; the spine covering is also creased and is fraying at its ends; the front and rear boards are rubbed but solid and doing their job well; internally, the front and rear free endpapers are lacking but the pastedowns are present; the front and rear inner hinges are fully split, exposing the inner netting, but are holding; the inner text pages are complete and are in good condition, some edgewear here and there, otherwise bright, clean and unmarked. VOLUME III is in VERY GOOD condition, its professional rebinding is bright and sharp, inner pages have some light foxing here and there, a blank endpaper has a few small numbers written at the upper corner, otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked. This COMPLETE, FIRST EDITION, THREE VOLUME SET is historically important, especially after the destructive fire of 1922. It is quite hard to find in its complete state. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This three volume set will require substantial additional shipping charges. After placing your order you will be notified of the additional charges and be able to accept or reject them before your payment is processed. This is the Famous and Rare FINAL EDITION of The Liberator. It celebrates the ratification of the 13th Amendment that Abolished Slavery, and contains an UNPUBLISHED EXTRACT from a LETTER by ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL FINAL ISSUE of this important anti-slavery paper. It is the corrected second printing of the final issue, with the added thanks to Reverend May on the third page, and with the additional letter from William C. Nell on the fourth page. Authors include Lydia Maria Child, E. Cady Stanton, Garrison, et al. Lydia Maria Child was, like Garrison, a prominent abolitionist.

Single fold broadsheet newspaper, 4 pages, 18.5x26 inches. Folded in half vertically and horizontally, as originally distributed.

Beautiful front-page engraving. On the left side are White slave owners selling their "Slaves, Horses & Other Cattle"; on the right side are Blacks entering the land of Emancipation; in the middle is a picture of Jesus with a Black man and White man at his feet and the statement: "I come to break the bonds of the Oppressor". Running through the illustration is a banner stating: "Thou Shalt Love Thy Neighbor As Thy Self".

Edited by William Lloyd Garrison, Printed by J. B. Yerrington & Son, with articles by and/or about William Garrison, Lydia Maria Child, Thaddeus Stevens, Abraham Lincoln, and many others.

Front page has a twenty-two line extract from an UNPUBLISHED LETTER "from the late PRESIDENT LINCOLN, addressed to Gen. Wadsworth, taking strong ground in favor of universal suffrage", and also a three-column article on "The Constitutional Amendment" (abolishing slavery).

Other articles include: "Through the Red Sea into the Wilderness" by Lydia Maria Child (8 lengthy paragraphs), "William Lloyd Garrison and the Liberator" (printing remarks by Garrison), and "Political Rights of Women," printing the text of a 26-line letter from Elizabeth Cady Stanton to William Lloyd Garrison. This issue also includes poems by J. C. Hagan, Sarah T. Bolton, Joel Benton, et al. One of the poems is titled: "A FAREWELL TO THE LIBERATOR", another "Slavery's Funeral March". Again, this was the final issue of "The Liberator," with articles on the abolition of slavery and universal suffrage.

FAIR condition, the issue was folded both horizontally and vertically as published, there is some light foxing and age toning, there is a 1 inch closed tear to the top margin, a 2 inch closed tear at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical folds and an associated close-by 1 inch closed tear, and small chips to the extremities and folds. Despite the expected wear, this original 155+ year old newspaper remains a complete, bright and clear copy.

The issue will be sent folded, as is its normal state. Please handle this rare item carefully, it has survived the aftermath of the assassination of Lincoln and the subsequent century and a half, but the newspaper and especially the folds are tender and the issue can be easily damaged.

This FINAL ISSUE of THE LIBERATOR, with the unpublished Lincoln text and tributes to Garrison and his paper, is considered to be the Publication's MOST VALUABLE and HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER ISSUE. You can read about THE LIBERATOR newspaper, and about many of the contributors in this final issue, on Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet.

    ROBERT GOVETT and EDWARD NANGLE

THE MAN OF SIN: IS HE THE POPES? Controversial Correspondence Between The Rev. EDWARD NANGLE, of SKREEN, IRELAND and ROBERT GOVETT of NORWICH, ENGLAND.

EDWARD NANGLE was an IRISH ANGLICAN EVANGELIST.

ROBERT GOVETT was a BRITISH THEOLOGIAN / EVANGELIST, connected to the CHURCH OF ENGLAND.

Their arguments for and against the POPE (and the POPES as a group concept) being THE MAN OF SIN / THE ANTICHRIST are contained in a series of correspondence between them.

From the Preface (by Robert Govett): "It is well known that the students of prophecy are at present divided into Preterists and Futurists. With the Preterists it is a point assumed as certain, that the Popes are the Man of Sin; and out of that assumption springs the year-day theory. And then the Book of Revelation is a history of the Christian Church; and the only question is, how far have we advanced in the fulfillment of the Trumpets and Vials. But if the Popes be not the Man of Sin, the whole structure falls. Then we are free to enquire, if any portion of the prophetic part of the Apocalypse be fulfilled. Then may we be looking out for the Lord's coming without any events preceding...I am sorry that the personal element appears so much in this discussion: but there are few who will state their arguments coolly, especially after the controversy has continued for some time..."

Irish and British arguing over religion? Who knew?

    About ROBERT GOVETT (from Wikipedia):

******Robert Govett, b.1813 d.1901, was a British theologian and independent pastor of Surrey Chapel, Norwich, Norfolk, England. Govett wrote many books and brochures. His best known work is: The Apocalypse: Expounded by Scripture (1861-65), which he wrote under a pen name. Wilbur M. Smith said about it: One of the profoundest expositions of the book of Revelation that I know of is the work of Robert Govett. My own opinion is that he brings to his interpretation a more thorough knowledge of the Scriptures in their bearing on the last book of the Bible than any other writer of his generation.******

    About EDWARD NANGLE (from Wikipedia):

******Edward Nangle, b.1799 d.1883, was a Church of Ireland minister and the founder of the Achill Mission Colony. He established a Protestant mission on Achill Island, County Mayo, in 1834 and worked there for eighteen years with the aim of bringing Protestantism to the Native Irish Christians who were impoverished in large part due to the colonial policies of the Protestant Ascendancy. Edward Nangle was involved in evangelical attempts to convert Catholics to Protestantism. He opened a Christian school on the island where children were taught reading, writing, agricultural skills and Christianity as part of a Missionary Colony.******

1867 JULES-EMILE PLANCHON HANDWRITTEN LETTER to DR. V.A. SIGNORET, plus two of J.-E. Planchon's ORIGINAL WORKS on the FRENCH PHYLLOXERA VINEYARD PLAGUE, plus a SIGNED WORK by J.-E. Planchon's brother, GUSTAVE PLANCHON. THREE PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER by JULES EMILE PLANCHON to DR. VINCENT ANTOINE SIGNORET (addressed to "Monsieur", but clearly to Dr. Vincent Antoine Signoret, identified by the other included items that are described below). The letter is on a single-fold sheet, making 4-pages. Handwritten on the front page and the two inside pages, the back page is blank. Signed by J. E. Planchon at the end of his letter, with his current positions as Professor and Director of Pharmaceuticals in Montpellier, written beneath his signature. AN IMPORTANT LETTER - Written during the time J-E PLANCHON was investigating the cause of the destruction of grape vines throughout Europe. Much of the letter discusses botany, with botanical words such as: Chènes, Coccus, Gramutii, Pulvinatus, Chermes, Cultivés, Coquilles, Èspece, etc. Much of the letter has to do with scale insects, a specialty of the letter's recipient, DR. V.-A. SIGNORET. The letter is dated: Montpellier le 10 Decembre 1867. It appears that the letter was originally sent to GUSTAVE PLANCHON, the brother of JULES EMILE PLANCHON, in response to a booklet written by Gustave Planchon titled: LE KERMES DU CHENE - AUX POINTS DE VUE ZOOLOGIQUE, COMMERCIAL & PHARMACEUTIQUE. But the letter by Signoret to Gustave Planchon was either intercepted by or forwarded to Jules Emile Planchon, who read it and responded to it. THE LETTER IN THIS AUCTION IS THE LETTER BY J.-E. PLANCHON to SIGNORET, it DOES NOT include the assumed letter written by Signoret to Gustave. However... GUSTAVE'S BOOKLET IS INCLUDED. The booklet has printed blue wrappers, sewn binding, 5.25x8.25", 47 pages. Published in PARIS and MONTPELLIER, 1864. The booklet is SIGNED and INSCRIBED by GUSTAVE PLANCHON at the top of the front cover: "hommage de l'auteur / Gustave Planchon (signed)". The booklet has the ink-stamped signature of SIGNORET on the half-title page, again on page 7 (the beginning of the text), and a third time on the blank bottom of the last page (page 47).

Handwritten on the front cover, presumably by SIGNORET is "ecrit à M. Planchon le 21 Nbre 1867". This corresponds nicely with the December 10, 1867, date on the letter by E.-J. Planchon to (presumably) Signoret. The booklet also has a handwritten, single-line, relevant note on page 23, presumably by Signoret. ALSO INCLUDED are TWO BOOKLETS on GRAPE VINES and VINEYARDS by J. E. PLANCHON. (1) An 8 page booklet titled "LA PHTHIRIOSE ou PEDICULAIRE DE LA VIGNE CHEZ LES ANCIENS - Et Les Cochenilles de la VIGNE Chez Les Modernes". A separately bound extract from the Societe des Agriculteurs de France, 1870. (2) A 16 page booklet titled "NOTES ENTOMOLOGIQUES SUR LE PHYLLOXERA VASTATRIX". A separately bound extract from the Societe des Agriculteurs de France, 1869. IN SUMMARY, THIS AUCTION IS FOR: (1) A 3-PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER BY JULES-EMILE PLANCHON. (2) A 42 PAGE Booklet by GUSTAVE PLANCHON, SIGNED by GUSTAVE PLANCHON, and owned by VINCENT ANTOINE SIGNORET, with his stamped Signature and Handwritten notes. (3) AN 8 PAGE Booklet by JULES EMILE PLANCHON on VINES both Ancient and Modern. (4) A 16 PAGE Booklet by JULES EMILE PLANCHON on PHYLLOXERA, the Plague that was destroying the Vineyards of France and Europe. CONDITION: The letter is solid, there are some stains, spots, creases and edge toning but the writing is clear throughout. The letter has a number of folds from where it was folded, presumably to fit into a small envelope.

The booklet by Gustave Planchon has a couple of creases and spots, but remains solid and nice.

The 8 page booklet has some creases but remains sturdy, bright and clean. The 16 page booklet is soiled, has edge wear, creases, and tears, has some foxing, and has some early previous owner's margin marks and text underlining.

ALL are SIGNED by various notable individuals. These important real estate transactions took place in 1868 and 1869. Bound in hard covers.

The main SELLER of the properties was CHARLES HENRY BLAKE and the main BUYERS were THE FREEHOLD SECURITIES COMPANY LIMITED, JOHN PARSON, and THE LAND AND HOUSE INVESTMENT SOCIETY. Sixty-one of the 62 indentures were transactions where C. H. Blake was the seller. Other individuals named in the indentures and conveyance include HENRY BESSEMER, Henry Hyde, William Honeywood, William Burchell the Younger, and other wealthy, movers and shakers of the day. Frank Richardson, Solicitor for both The Freehold Securities Company and The Land And House Investment Society, signed many of the indentures as a witness.

The indentures and conveyance are bound in a book that was presumably made to hold them. Hardcovers, textured cloth covered boards with leather spine and corners, five raised spine bands, gilt title "PORTOBELLO ESTATE" on the front cover, 10x15 inches (25x38 cm), 147 pages (74 leaves). The indentures are all printed on watermarked laid paper.

The first item is a long manuscript CONVEYANCE titled: "PORTOBELLO ESTATE In the parish of Saint Mary Abbott Kensington in the County of Middlesex - Copy of the CONVEYANCE of the above property to HENRY BESSEMER ESQUIRE and of the LEASES for which said property is subject". The INDENTURE that is part of the Conveyance is dated the 16th day of December 1869. It is 21 pages long and includes a FULL PAGE HAND COLORED PLAT MAP showing the properties on Golbourne (Golborne) Road between Portobello Road and Wornington Road, and a LEASE SCHEDULE that fully describes each parcel. Numerous signatures at the end of the Indenture / Conveyance.

The subsequent 61 INDENTURES are between CHARLES HENRY BLAKE of Stanley Crescent, Notting Hill, in the County of Middlesex, and either JOHN PARSON, or THE FREEHOLD SECURITIES COMPANY LIMITED, or THE LAND AND HOUSE INVESTMENT SOCIETY. Nineteen are dated in 1868, the others in 1869.

Each Indenture has a hand drawn plat map of the property in question, all presumably part of the Portobello Estate. Most of the indentures are 2 pages long, some longer.

Condition: The covers have some old water staining / shorelining, scrapes, rubs, and general wear; the gilt title "Portobello Estate" is rubbed; else the covers are solid and doing their job well. The front and rear endpapers are recent. The bound in indentures have gray and brown stains, substantial on many of the pages, present on all the pages. Perhaps these are ink blotter stains, or offsetting from where these indentures were originally stored, or simply caused by unstable ink and colors, I do not know. The good news is that the manuscript writing is FULLY VISIBLE AND LEGIBLE beneath all the stains. The first two leaves have a 2x2.5 inch (5x7 cm) area of tearing, mostly in the blank spine gutter area but affecting some text words. The tears could be archivally repaired. The first two leaves, and a couple other pages, have a pea size hole that affects some letters. There is 1/2 inch (1 cm) of worming to the bottom blank margin of the last 3 leaves. The last leaf has a quarter (the U.S. coin) size hole in its center affecting some words. This last leaf is blank on the verso, so the affected words are only on the recto.

An incredible group of important historic indentures with plat maps showing the Victorian Era property sales of the PORTOBELLO ESTATE that led to the development of the fashionable PORTOBELLO ROAD / NOTTING HILL region of London that we know today.

This archive of PORTOBELLO ROAD indentures belongs in a museum, imho.

The letter reads (as best I can make out): "My Dear Mr. Gaskell Many thanks for the Photo with which I was much pleased and by which I can imagine that the dress must have cut a very good figure in the room & I am glad that my suggestion was of any use to you in the matter. I very much envy you your Roman trip which must have been very enjoyable to you more [especially] in such excellent companionship of Mr. W. Wood who must be so au fait in all that belongs to the Eternal City, and the funeral of the gook King must have been very [impressive] and interesting and a thing to have seen. It is now nearly thirty eight years since I was in Rome, where I remained three years, but I have a most vivid recollection of it & all its glories, & still live in hopes of again seeing it before I die, though at present I see no probability of my being able to enjoy so great a pleasure in [the] future. It must have greatly altered since I was there & I have no doubt in the main for the better, especially in a sanitary point of view, though perhaps not altogether in [picturesqueness], but on one point I am sure it must have done so & that is in its government which when I was there was simply diabolical. I hope that we shall have the pleasure of seeing your father down here during his stay in London and immediately on receiving your letter yesterday I wrote a letter off to him at Wootton to be forwarded & I have no doubt that he will receive it tomorrow. I shall however send him a line to the Reform Club to make matters more sure, as I am most anxious for him to come down here and see the Windsor Tapestry Manufactory should he be able to spare the time. Mrs. Ward unites with me in kindest regards to Mrs. Gaskell & the rest of your family circle. & believe me, Yours ever Sincerely, E. M. Ward". CONDITION: The letter has a vertical and horizontal fold, perhaps from being folded to fit into a small envelope. The blank backside has paper remnants, as if the letter had been glued to a mount at some point and later removed. There is a small ink-stamped name on the black backside "K. J. Turner". The writing remains bright, clear and fully legible. Edward Matthew Ward RA (London 14 July 1816 - 15 January 1879) was an English Victorian narrative painter best known for his murals in the Palace of Westminster depicting episodes in British history from the English Civil War to the Glorious Revolution.

VERY GOOD condition: The mounts are lightly soiled, have some edge and corner wear, and a few smallish stains to the backsides; one mount has a clipped corner. The photographs are lovely with just a few light rubs and a couple small superficial scrapes.

How HAYWARDS California became HAYWARD California (from the City website):

******Hayward was originally known as "Hayward's", then as "Haywood", later as "Haywards", and eventually as "Hayward". On his way from gold country to San Francisco in 1851,a failed prospector named William Hayward passed through what is now downtown Hayward. He liked what he saw and bought some land. In 1852, Hayward set up a small general store at the corner of A Street and Mission Boulevard. The store became a major stop on the road from Oakland to San Jose. Hayward expanded his business, erecting a lodging house that grew to become the famous Hayward's Hotel. When the town was incorporated on March 11, 1876, it was officially named "Haywards" after the landmark hotel. The "s" was dropped several years later.******

About OTIS HILL of HAYWARDS, California (from History of the State of California & Biographical Record of Coast Counties, California, Pages 1189-1190. The Chapman Publishing Co., Chicago, 1904.):

******Prominent among the pioneer residents of Alameda county is OTIS HILL, a venerable and highly respected agriculturist, whose ranch is located about one mile from the city of Hayward. In the development of this section of the county, and in the advancement of its welfare, he has been an important factor. Coming here a full half century ago, he, with the other early settlers of this locality, bravely endured the hardships and privations of pioneer life. Mr. Hill was born, September 21, 1827, in Lockport, N.Y., a son of Orson Hill.

Coming to California by the Nicaragua route in 1855, he located in Hayward's, where he had a brother living. In 1856 Mr. Hill bought, for $900, one hundred and thirty acres of land in the Castro valley. Some time during the sixties he got the Spanish grant title to two hundred acres. He has now in his home ranch many acres of valuable land, supplied with water from a spring, and lying on the line of the Haywards and Oakland Electric line, a most favorable location. He carried on general farming, paying special attention to the cultivation of fruits, and is quite successful. He also has a valuable gravel pit, which is a source of considerable revenue.******

Previously owned by the 19th century New York physician Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh, with his ink stamp on a number of pages: "Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh / Physician and Notary Public / Sharon, N.Y.". An Internet search indicates Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh was a member of the "Eclectic Medical Society of New York" in the late 1800s.

Also previously owned by Gilbert R. Seigworth, MD, b.1932 d.2019, with his ownership label on the front free-endpaper: "Gilbert R. Seigworth, MD / Vestal, New York". An Internet search indicates Dr. Seigworth was an avid collector of antique medical equipment and antiquarian medical books.

CONDITION: The original covers are worn and not pretty - rubbed, scraped, stained, frayed at the spine ends, and splitting for 2 inches at the front fold; nonetheless they are solid and doing their job. Internally nice, the front and rear inner hinges are cracked but holding well, the thin endpapers have some light creasing, the text pages are lightly age toned as normal, otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A solid, complete, copy with well-worn but original covers.

ORIGINAL 1882 EDITION with interesting provenance.

Yes, electric shock therapy is making a comeback, but who knew

    it could cure everything!

First Edition of Volume VI. Hardcovers, leather covered spine and corners with pebbled cloth covered boards, 5.5x7.5 inches, 384 pages. Illustrated with drawings and fancy title letters. Y FRYTHONES was a monthly Welsh language periodical for women, with much of the contents written by women of Wales. The contents were religious, literary, and general in nature, including articles on religion, raising children, the family, and the home, as well as poetry, music, games and biographies of prominent women. All was in Welsh. The periodical was edited by the teacher, poet, and unconventional woman, Sarah Jane Rees. The periodical was founded in 1874 and ended publication in 1891. It was created to continue the work of the Welsh women's periodical Y GYMRAES which was published for only two years, 1850 and 1851. Y GYMRAES was created in response to a government report which had strongly criticized the lax morals of Welsh women. Both Y GYMRAES and then Y FRYTHONES set out to promote higher intellectual and moral standards for women in Wales. Previously owned by KATIE HUMPHREYS, with her bookplate on the front free endpaper, and by ROBERT OWEN, with his small ink stamped name on the front free endpaper and title page. At the bottom of the front pastedown is a small label of A. BROMLEY / Printer, Lithographer, Bookbinder, &c / High Street / BANGOR (WALES). It appears likely that KATIE HUMPHREYS and ROBERT OWEN were both from Bangor Wales, as both names show up prominently there. GOOD CONDITION: the leather spine covering is scraped and rubbed, and the leather corners are rubbed at their edges; the pebbled cloth covered boards have a few smudges; otherwise the coverts remain solid and are doing their job well; internally there is a bit of foxing and some creases here and there, else the pages are tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid, nice copy. About CRAGOGWEN, pseudonym of SARAH JANE REES (from Wikipedia): ******Sarah Jane Rees, b.1839 d.1916, also known as CRANOGWEN, was a Welsh poet, editor, teacher, temperance campaigner, and proto-suffragette. She had two long lesbian relationships. Sarah Jane Rees was born at Llangrannog in Cardiganshire, the daughter of a mariner John Rees. She was a precocious child and insisted that she accompany her father to sea rather than undertake sewing and cooking chores. She attended school in both Cardigan and New Quay, and for a time studied at a navigation school in London, where she gained her master's certificate, a qualification allowing her to command a ship in any part of the world. In 1859 Sarah Jane set up her own navigation school in her home village of Llangrannog. In addition to teaching navigation and other subjects, she became editor of the Welsh language women's periodical Y Frythones (1878 to 1889), a platform for Welsh bluestockings and proto-suffragettes. Rees had two significant same-sex relationships. Her first was with Fanny Rees, a milliner's daughter from Troedyraur, near LLangrannog. Fanny contracted tuberculosis and returned to Wales around 1874 to die. She moved into Rees' home rather than that of her family, and died in her arms. Rees commemorated Fanny in one of her best-known poems, Fy Ffrynd (My Friend). Her second relationship was with Jane Thomas, with whom she spent most of her life. Open about her unconventional domestic arrangement, Rees was nonetheless a committed Methodist.******
