A complete, presentable copy of this important, scholarly work on Reformation Chorale Music. Though functional in its perfect bound blue wrappers, the book would look incredible stitch bound in leather covers! Are you up for the task? PETER MORTIMER, b. 1750 d. 1828, was an English born Moravian organist, composer, conductor, and musicologist, who spent most of his life in Germany, in the Moravian settlements of eastern Saxony. In this work on the early church modes, or Gregorian modes, he explored the reasons for their superiority over the modern modes in the realm of choral music. Mortimer established that three modes governed Reformation chorale music, the hypodorian, hypophrygian (hypoionische), and hypomixolydian modes, and that the music had to be understood harmonically in that context. Considering the paucity of examples available to him at that time, Mortimer's musicological analysis was exceptionally astute, being fundamentally sound. (Eitner VII, 74-75; Kümmerle, Encyklopädie der evangelischen Kirchenmusik (1890) II:307-8).

With the Preterists it is a point assumed as certain, that the Popes are the Man of Sin; and out of that assumption springs the year-day theory. And then the Book of Revelation is a history of the Christian Church; and the only question is, how far have we advanced in the fulfillment of the Trumpets and Vials. But if the Popes be not the Man of Sin, the whole structure falls. Then we are free to enquire, if any portion of the prophetic part of the Apocalypse be fulfilled. Then may we be looking out for the Lord's coming without any events preceding...I am sorry that the personal element appears so much in this discussion: but there are few who will state their arguments coolly, especially after the controversy has continued for some time..."

Irish and British arguing over religion? Who knew?

    About ROBERT GOVETT (from Wikipedia):

******Robert Govett, b.1813 d.1901, was a British theologian and independent pastor of Surrey Chapel, Norwich, Norfolk, England. Govett wrote many books and brochures. His best known work is: The Apocalypse: Expounded by Scripture (1861-65), which he wrote under a pen name. Wilbur M. Smith said about it: One of the profoundest expositions of the book of Revelation that I know of is the work of Robert Govett. My own opinion is that he brings to his interpretation a more thorough knowledge of the Scriptures in their bearing on the last book of the Bible than any other writer of his generation.******

    About EDWARD NANGLE (from Wikipedia):

******Edward Nangle, b.1799 d.1883, was a Church of Ireland minister and the founder of the Achill Mission Colony. He established a Protestant mission on Achill Island, County Mayo, in 1834 and worked there for eighteen years with the aim of bringing Protestantism to the Native Irish Christians who were impoverished in large part due to the colonial policies of the Protestant Ascendancy. Edward Nangle was involved in evangelical attempts to convert Catholics to Protestantism. He opened a Christian school on the island where children were taught reading, writing, agricultural skills and Christianity as part of a Missionary Colony.******

About WILLIAM WALKER ATKINSON (from Wikipedia and other Internet sources):

******William Walker Atkinson, b.1862 d.1932, was a prolific and influential American Occultist, Mentalist, Publisher, Author, Swami and founder of the Yogi Publication Society. He published the New Thought magazines Suggestion, New Thought and Advanced Thought. The New Thought movement in America evolved from Mary Baker Eddy's Christian Science teachings, and embraced a wide array of teachings relating to the creative power of thought (particularly with regard to mental healing), a universalistic embrace of different religious traditions, and self-affirmative psychology. Atkinson wrote under a wide variety of pseudonyms and personas, such as Theron Q. Dumont, Theodore Sheldon, Magus Incognito, Swami Panchadasi, Swami Bhakta Vishita, and Yogi Ramacharaka. Atkinson's Ramacharaka writings helped create a new, western oriented approach to yoga which emerged from the intersection of the rise in physical culture, self-help, mental hygiene, mental powers, New Thought, Theosophy, and self-affirmations.******

Despite the flaws the text pages are complete with printing that is fully legible, and the original wrappers, though disbound and chipped, are present with clear text. The wrappers are often lacking from this Yiddish naturalization guide.

Helen W. Wood was a lifelong white activist working to defend the rights and save the souls of African Americans. In the 1930s she was a Communist Party organizer. She converted to Christianity while working in the defense of an African American youth in Iowa charged with murder. The Iowa Communist Party opposed her work, but her efforts were supported by the local evangelicals. This began her conversion from Communism to Evangelical Christianity, a process completed in a Los Angeles skid row mission where she continued to work to better the lives of African Americans in need of help.

Though an Anti-Communist tract, it is also an interesting autobiography that envisions evangelical Christians as people who would not tolerate racism (especially from a President).

    Scarce, especially so SIGNED.

The writing on the note begins at the very top of the piece of paper, indicating that the note may have been the last part of a longer letter with only this last part clipped and kept by the previous owner, I have no way of knowing for certain. Next comes a large photo postcard of Zagreb captioned with a handwritten note stating "Zagreb / First city for us in Yugoslavia". Then begins a large section of photos and some ephemera related to the group's visit to Medjugorje. Their stay in Medjugorje seems to have been the main purpose of the trip. There are 45 snapshots and several pieces of paper ephemera. The snapshots are accompanied by the following handwritten notes: ******Our group and first views of Medjugorje; Family dinner at Medjugorje, three Fathers one Sister, Jesusa and her Mother; Medjugorje Parish Church, Father McDonald of our group from San Francisco and others behind organ and beneath choir left of Apparitions; Chinese Mass in Apparition Room at Church with Mary giving the Hail Mary; VISITING THE VISIONARIES VICKA AND MARIJA AT THEIR HOMES; Andrej Subie took us to visit. He is translating for Vicka and Marija; Our host family and our home in Medjugorje.****** Next come snapshots of the group in Dubrovnik, with scenes of Dubrovnik including ancient sites and modern tourist beaches. Then some photos of Mostar, more pictures of the group, a photo card of a bush with a miraculous appearance of the Virgin Mary which "was shown to the children in Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, and it was confirmed as true". Then a few photos of buildings on Lopud Island. Quite an interesting album, especially so since the snapshots were taken in 1987, only a few years before the Yugoslavian Civil War (the Yugoslav War) which began in 1991 and devastated the former Yugoslavia for the next ten years. Condition: The album is sturdy, the photos are bright and clear, the photos and ephemera are glued on to the album pages and cannot be removed, the thin plastic covering to the album pages is sometimes torn or missing but that does not affect the items on the album pages. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This is a large, heavy photo album, that will require substantial additional shipping charges. After placing your order you will be notified of the additional charges and be able to accept or reject them before your payment is processed. Thanks.

******The Memphis Miracle was a 1994 meeting in Memphis, Tennessee, where representatives of Pentecostal and Charismatic denominations and churches came together to form the Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches of North America (PCCNA), an interdenominational and racially inclusive partnership. The PCCNA was created to replace the Pentecostal Fellowship of North America (PFNA) which was formed in 1948 by White Pentecostal Churches, but excluded Black Pentecostal groups. The PCCNA was created to remedy the situation, and it was at the Memphis meeting that the PFNA and its members apologized to the Black Pentecostal bodies.******

Each article is written in the language that the author chose, often in Latin, but also in Italian, French, English, etc. Published by Directio et Administratio Antonianum, ROMA (ROME, ITALY), 1926-1996. SEVENTY-ONE VOLUMES (Volumes 1-71). 6.5x9.5 inches (17x24 cm). Pages numbered by volume (i.e. numbered consecutively when there are several parts to a single volume). Approximately 400-600 pages per volume, less to earlier volumes, more to later volumes. Volumes 1-51 are bound in HARDCOVERS, with the complete annual issues bound within. Some of the original wrappers / paper covers are bound in, most are not, otherwise every annual volume is complete. Most of the hardcover volumes have black leather covered spines and corners with matching black pebbled cloth, 4 raised spine bands, and gilt spine titles; some of the hardcover volumes have cloth covered spines and marbled paper covered boards. Volumes 52-71 are in wrappers, most published in three parts per Volume. The previous owner has put thin plastic bands around the three issues of each of the softcover annual volumes, presumably to keep them safe and in proper order while stored, perhaps deep in a Vatican vault. Though single volumes (or one part of a three part annual volume) can sometimes be found for sale, this UNBROKEN SET OF 71 VOLUMES has become almost impossible to find. While most volumes do not show any previous ownership names, some show a variety of previous owners, including Adolf Ledwolorz O.F.M., b. 1892 d. 1973, a Polish Franciscan Catholic Scholar, author of a few works on the history of Franciscans and on Polish Catholics; Franziskaner Konvent in Hannover (a Franciscan Monastery in Hannover, Germany), and others. Accordingly, there are some ink stamps and handwritten names, mainly to the prelim pages, of the volumes that show a previous owner. Nothing major. Apparently this complete set had a varied provenance. GOOD CONDITION: Various degrees of rubbing and scrapes to the covers, mostly minor but some more significant including fraying at the spine ends; internally, there is light toning to the pages, some signs of handling, some creases and wear here and there, overall still tight, bright, clean and clear. There are no marks or marginalia that I can find, except the previous owner's stamps and written names as noted above, however there are MANY volumes and MANY pages that I have not closely examined and there well could be some notes, underlining, annotations, etc. that I did not come across in volumes I did not examine (e.g. I did not cut open the straps that hold the softcover volumes together) or missed in my examination. A solid, very presentable, complete set of 71 Volumes with All Parts. Would look great on and off the shelf. No good Catholic library should be without it, God knows. Will be shipped in FIVE or more HEAVY BOXES. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This 71 Volume Set will be extremely expensive to ship internationally and will require massive additional shipping charges. If you are nonetheless interested, after placing your order you will be notified of the additional charges and be able to accept or reject them before your payment is processed. Or you can contact us ahead of time to find out the shipping charge to your country. Thanks.
