Pagination: ff. [8] CCXVI (i.e. [8], 216 leaves numbered in Roman numerals). Illustrated with intricate woodcut crests on titles.

GOOD Condition: Covers are rubbed and have some scrapes, most noticeably on the leather corners, still the covers are solid, doing their job well, and quite attractive. Internally, the title page and the subsequent couple of leaves have a little professional conservation at top margin that affects a bit of the title page image and a couple words at the top of the following two leaves; there is the ghost of the removal of a bookplate on the front free-endpaper, the title page has some early marginalia that has been lined out and there is some relevant scholarly ink marginalia on the latter pages related to the description of obscure words in that part of the text; overall solid, tight, bright, clean and clear. A nice copy.

COLLATED page by page with a 1565 copy in the Austrian National Library (the pages of THIS copy are much whiter and brighter).

About MAESTRO ALEJO VENEGAS DE BUSTO (from Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet):

******Alejo Venegas de Busto, b.Toledo 1497 or 1498, d.Toledo, 1562, was a Spanish Renaissance writer, humanist, lexicographer, and considered a Spanish mystic.

His best known work is the AGONY OF THE TRANSITION TO DEATH... (Toledo, 1537), an ascetic, mystic work that he dedicated to Doña Ana de la Cerda, Countess of Melito, on the occasion of the death of the writer's great protector, her husband Count Diego de Mendoza. This work derives specifically from the Praeparatio ad Mortem (1534) by Erasmus. The second edition appears in Toledo in 1540, the third in Toledo, 1543, the fourth in Zaragoza, 1544, the fifth in Toledo, 1547, the sixth in Toledo, 1553 and the seventh in Alcalá, 1565. Beginning in the third edition Venegas added his Brief Declaration of the Sentences and Obscure Words. The book has continued to be reprinted and was edited in the 19th century by Eugenio de Ochoa (Paris, Beaudry, 1847) and in 2001 by Marc Zuili (Paris, L'Harmattan, 2001). Various parts of this work have appeared in numerous other publications, including works on Spanish and Christian Mysticism.******

The tapes all appear to me to be in GOOD condition, though the labels have bubbled. I have tested several and they played fine. I have provided photos that show exactly what tapes are in the folding case.

TEXT IN FRENCH. The spiritual works of the Reverend Louys of Granada, divided into four parts : La Guide des Pecheurs (The Fishermen's Guide); Le Livre de l'Oraison (The Book of Contemplative Prayer); Le Memorial de la Vie Christienne (The Memorial of Christian Life), and le Livre de L'Amour de Dieu (the Book of God's Love); avec la Lettre de S. Eucher (with the Letter of St. Eucher). Condition:

The covers are worn, soiled, and scraped, the bottom cover corners are bent and creased, the spine is frayed at its ends and pulling for 1 inch at the top, the spine label has some chips; nonetheless the covers are solid, doing their job well, and are attractive in a Hogwarts Library sort of way. A solid, nice copy of this important book. The Venerable Louis of Granada, OP (b. 1505 d. 1588), was a Dominican friar noted as theologian, writer and preacher. TOME PREMIER Qui Contient La Première et Seconde Partie. (FIRST VOLUME, containing Parts I and II). A Second Volume, containing Part III, was published subsequently. This is for the First Volume, with Parts I and II, only.

AIX (Aix-en-Provence, France): Charles David (printer to the King, the Clergy and the City). M.DC.LVII (1657).

Collated with a copy held in the Collection Jésuite des Fontaines at the Library of Lyon, that was digitized online. (This copy is in MUCH better condition than the copy in Lyon which was heavily water-stained and browned throughout.)

Full Vellum Covers, three raised spine bands, 6x8 inches, 2126 pages + an errata page. At the rear is added the Title-Page and the Table-of-Contents of the Second Volume (a Publisher's teaser, I suppose).

This 1657 book is in VERY GOOD condition, the vellum covers have yellowed and have some areas of browning especially on the rear cover, the front and rear inner hinges are cracked but holding tight, there is a two line ink statement on the front free pastedown that I believe indicates this book came from Beaucaire, France; the inner text pages are lovely, there is some light toning to some of the early and latter pages, light shorelining to the upper part of the first 50 or so pages, a torn blank bottom margin to a prelim page (not affecting text), a thumbprint size tear to the front blank margin of a few middle pages, and a rare spot here and there; overall the inner pages are quite amazingly well-kept, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A lovely copy of this rare work on why one should worship Infant Jesus.

RARE, becoming almost impossible to find.

Ah, the innocence of Babies, even Baby Jesus...

Though many believe the 1673 edition is the first edition, IT IS NOT, as a collation with the 1671 Austrian edition and numerous bibliographic citations clearly show. Leather covered boards, spine has five compartments and four raised spine bands, tooled with framing and designs to the front and rear boards and with a design in each of the five spine compartments, 6.5x8". Pagination: Blank Front Free-Endpaper, [2] blank prelim page, [1] Frontispiece Engraving, [1] blank verso, [1] Title-Page, [1] blank verso, [3] "Serenissimo Principi Ranutio II", [1] Printer's / Publishers / "Imprimatur" Colophon page (with the date 1671 in two places), 537 Text, [38] Index, [1] blank verso, [2] blank end paper,

Blank Rear Free-Endpaper. Plus 5 fold-open Plates. Illustrated with FRONTISPIECE ENGRAVING and FIVE FOLD-OPEN PLATES. All 5 Fold-Open Plates are Present, however they are all disbound and laid-in at their proper place. CONDITION: Covers are split at the front spine fold and tender at the rear spine fold but holding well with the cord binding, covers are bowing a bit, covers are worn through at the corners and places along the edges, have some rubs and scrapes, but are still quite lovely with their tooled leather covers and spine. Internally, there is an early handwritten note pasted on the front pastedown (in Latin-Italian?), there is some foxing, toning and smudging most noticeably on the first and last few pages and very light on most pages, "Bibliotheque (De Lovina?)" is written at the top of a blank prelim page - the page facing the engraved frontispiece page, there is some edge chipping and wear (not affecting text) mainly to the first and last few pages, otherwise the inner pages are still tight bright, clean and unmarked. THE PLATES are all disbound, all have edge chips and wear (some lightly affecting the image), closed tears to the folds and edges, tape repairs to their blank backsides, foxing primarily to the margins and backsides, and signs of handling; in spite of these flaws the plates are still solid, impressive, and quite lovely. All the plates are laid-in at their proper place. This 1671 FIRST EDITION is almost Impossible To Find, especially in a complete state, with its frontispiece and all five plates present.

There is a circular ink stamp on the front pastedown showing that this book once was in the Library of Rev. L. KUENZEL (LESTER HENRY KUENZEL, aka Reverend L. Kunzel, Father Lester H. Kuenzel). He wrote, among other things, "A Manual of the Ceremonies of Low Mass" which was published in New York in 1930. And there is also a small, recent bookplate on the front pastedown with the letters "SAG". Condition: Remnants of a shelving label on the spine, spine lettering has rubbed away, some yellowing and soiling to the vellum covers, inner hinges cracked but holding, inner pages are toned, some quite heavily, but the printing is always legible. Overall a complete, solid, presentable copy of this book from 1713. About FRANÇOIS DOUAREN (from Wikipedia): ******François Douaren (also sometimes spelled Duaren; Franciscus Duarenus; Francisci Duareni) b. 1509 d. 1559,

was a French jurist and professor of law at the University of Bourges. After studies in Paris under Budé and in Bourges, Douaren worked as an advocate for the Parlement of Paris. In 1538, he was called to teach at Bourges. Following a bitter dispute with Baro, he abandoned the chair for Paris until Baro's death in 1550, after which Douaren returned to teach at Bourges. Like his compatriots Jacques Cujas, François Hotman and Hugues Doneau, Douaren was one of the leading representatives of the legal humanist school of thought within the science of Roman law on the European continent. These 16th century French law professors applied the philological methods of the Italian humanists to legal texts. It was their aim to arrive at a historically more accurate understanding of the texts of the Roman Corpus Iuris Civilis. In addition to numerous commentaries on the Corpus, Douaren wrote a leading commentary on the Roman law of obligations, Commentarius de pactis (1544), which greatly influenced modern theories of obligations. His 1544 programme of studies, De ratione docendi discendique iuris epistola, was the first statement of the mos gallicus, the French Humanist approach to higher education. Its core contents - language studies, introductory classes on the base of the Justinian Code, a methodical approach based on the laws of the Corpus - came to be introduced at most European legal faculties.******

SCARCE 1740 BOOK by SCALIGER with Two Interesting BOOKPLATES. About JOSEPH JUSTUS SCALIGER (excerpted from Wikipedia): ******Joseph Justus Scaliger, b. 1540 d. 1609, was a French religious leader and scholar, known for expanding the notion of classical history from Greek and ancient Roman history to include Persian, Babylonian, Jewish and ancient Egyptian history. He spent the last sixteen years of his life in the Netherlands. During the first seven years of his residence at Leiden his reputation was at its highest point. His literary judgement was unquestioned. From his throne at Leiden he ruled the learned world; a word from him could make or mar a rising reputation. At the same time, Scaliger had made numerous enemies. He hated ignorance, but he hated still more half-learning, and most of all dishonesty in argument or in quotation. He had no toleration for the disingenuous argument and the misstatements of facts of those who wrote to support a theory or to defend an unsound cause. His pungent sarcasm soon reached the ears of the persons who were its object, and his pen was not less bitter than his tongue. He was conscious of his power, and not always sufficiently cautious or sufficiently gentle in its exercise. He made many enemies. The results of his method of historical criticism threatened the Catholic controversialists and the authenticity of many of the documents on which they relied. The Jesuits, who aspired to be the source of all scholarship and criticism, saw the writings and authority of Scaliger as a formidable barrier to their claims. Scaliger was known to be an irreconcilable Protestant and as long as his intellectual supremacy was unquestioned, the Protestants had the advantage in learning and scholarship. His enemies therefore aimed to attack him as a man and to destroy his reputation. This was no easy task, for his moral character was high. Nonetheless, in 1607 the Jesuits successfully attacked Scaliger by publishing a 400 page tome that purportedly exposed 500 lies in Scaliger's works. This was said to have broken Scaliger's spirit, and two years later he died.******

SCARCE 1747 TWO VOLUME SET on LAW by the highly influential BOHMER. These tomes would look great on the SHELF of any LAWYER or LEGAL SCHOLAR, or in the bookcase of anyone who appreciates rare, interesting old books! About JUSTUS HENNING BÖHMER (from Wikipedia): ******Justus Henning Böhmer (b. 1674 in Hanover, d. 1749 in Halle) was an outstanding German jurist, ecclesiastical jurist, Professor of the University of Halle; and also Geheimer Rat, Count Palatine and Chancellor of the Duchy of Magdeburg. In the judicial field initially he was a protectionist of the existing "territorial system" or Erastian theory of ecclesiastical government, but in the following years he tended towards the natural right and "Kollegialismus". In his first great work, "Jus Ecclesiasticum Protestantiun" he drew on the traditional Canon Law, but he reformed the law so that it was exempted from rigid orthodoxy, principles, resistance and dogmatism. Affected by the ideas of the Age of Enlightenment he represented an increasing critical and scientific development instead of a religious fundamentalism. Böhmer's legal thinking predominated in Protestantism church law of the 18th century, and was the basis for numerous church reforms yet to be. His results in the domain of civil law were of similar importance. In his next main work "Introductio in Jus Digestorum", a pandects-compendium which was maintained until the 20th century, he liberated the traditional German law from the influence of the old Roman law and thus prepared the basis of "general Landrecht (law code) of the Prussian states". A huge amount of further significant and notable works on civil and church law as well as expertises were penned by him, and were published by his son Georg Ludwig Böhmer after Justus Henning's death in the collected edition "Exercitationes ad Pandectas".****** INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: These two large books are heavy and will require substantial additional shipping charges. About PAOLO SARPI (excerpted from Wikipedia): ******Paolo Sarpi, b. 1552 d. 1623, was an Italian historian, prelate, scientist, canon lawyer, and statesman active on behalf of the Venetian Republic during the period of its successful defiance of the papal interdict (1605 to 1607) and its war (1615 to 1617) with Austria over the Uskok pirates. His writings, HIGHLY CRITICAL of the CATHOLIC CHURCH and its Scholastic Tradition, inspired both Hobbes and Edward Gibbon in their own historical debunkings of priestcraft. As a defender of the liberties of Republican Venice and PROPONENT of the SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, Sarpi attained fame as a hero of Republicanism and Free Thought. His last words, "Esto perpetua" ("may she live forever" i.e. the Republic of Venice), were recalled by John Adams in 1820 in a letter to Thomas Jefferson, when Adams wrote "I wish as devoutly as Father Paul for the preservation of our vast American empire and our free institutions" (i.e. as devoutly as Fra Paoloa Sarpi had wished for the preservation of Venice and its free institutions.) Sarpi was also an experimental scientist, a proponent of the Copernican system, a friend and patron of Galileo Galilei, and a keen follower of the latest research on anatomy, astronomy, and ballistics at the University of Padua. His extensive network of correspondents included Francis Bacon and William Harvey. Sarpi believed that government institutions should rescind their censorship of Avvisi, the often anti Venitian newsletters which started to be common in his time. Instead of censorship Sarpi advised the Venetian government to publish their own newsletters to combat those of outsiders and agitators. Acting himself in that spirit, Sarpi published several pamphlets in defense of Venice's rights over the Adriatic. As such, Sarpi could be considered as an early advocate of the Freedom of the Press, though the concept did not yet exist in his lifetime.******

The book is a POETIC LATIN REPHRASING / PARAPHRASING of the PSALMS by the great SCOTTISH Latin Scholar and Poet GEORGE BUCHANAN. ASSOCIATION COPY. The book has two interesting associations: (1) There is a signature on the title page of (?) BRAZER DAVIS. The question mark is because I cannot make out the first word, perhaps it is a first name or a military rank? There is a lot of historical information about a John Brazer Davis, also known as Colonel John Brazer Davis, an early American military man who is even mentioned several times in the memoirs of John Adams. Is this him? I do not know because, though Brazer Davis is written neatly and clearly, the word or title preceding Brazer Davis does not look like John or like Colonel, nor does it look like anything that I can figure out. (2) The book was deaccessioned from the Tufts College Library, and there is a printed signed note laid in that states the book was a gift of REV. CONVERS FRANCIS of CAMBRIDGE and was donated by him in 1861. The slip has his signature. Looking into both Convers Francis and John Brazer Davis one finds that they are often mentioned as being in the same fraternities and organizations at the same time, which is interesting. I HAVE PROVIDED IMAGES of the SIGNATURE THAT IS ON THE TITLE PAGE and of the laid in DONATION SLIP so that you can determine for yourself if the associations hold water or not. You can find information about both John Brazer Davis and Rev. Convers Francis on the Internet. CONDITION: Disbound Covers, as noted above; there are some library markings, including withdrawn stamps, here and there; there are relevant handwritten pencil notes in the margins and among the text, most are light and hard to read; there is offsetting to the margins of the first and last few pages; the first few pages have some water staining to the bottom margin; overall the inner pages are complete, remain nicely bound together, and have printing that is bright and clear. A very suitable copy for rebinding, should you desire to do so. About the author GEORGE BUCHANAN (from Wikipedia): ****** George Buchanan, b. 1506 d. 1582, was a Scottish historian and humanist scholar. According to historian Keith Brown, Buchanan was "the most profound intellectual sixteenth century Scotland produced." His ideology of resistance to royal usurpation gained widespread acceptance during the Scottish Reformation. Brown says the ease with which King James VII was deposed in 1689 shows the power of Buchanan's ideas. For mastery of the Latin language, Buchanan has seldom been surpassed by any modern writer. His style is not rigidly modelled on that of any classical author, but has a freshness and elasticity of its own. Hugh Trevor-Roper called him "by universal consent, the greatest Latin writer, whether in prose or in verse, in sixteenth century Europe". He wrote Latin as if it were his mother tongue. Buchanan also had a rich vein of poetical feeling, and much originality of thought. His translations of the Psalms and of the Greek plays are more than mere versions; his two tragedies, Baptistes and Jephthes, enjoyed a European reputation for academic excellence. His Pompae verses were written for performance at the court entertainments of Mary, including the Offering of the Rustic Gods sung during a masque devised by Bastian Pagez for the baptism of King James.******
